An Adaptation of Woven Fabric on Batik for Personal Clothing


Batik is a traditional textile art that uses wax-resist dyeing to create patterns on fabric, while woven fabrics are characterized by interlaced threads providing texture and durability. The purpose of this research is to adapt woven fabrics onto batik for personal clothing, ensuring garments are comfortable, durable, and culturally authentic while appealing to modern consumer preferences. The motivation for this research arises from the need to enhance the usability and market potential of batik garments by integrating fabric types like cotton (36%) and polyester blends (24%) with traditional motifs, balancing heritage with contemporary design. Data collection involved surveys of 50 respondents, including artisans, designers, and consumers, complemented by prototyping, fabric testing, and evaluation of color, texture, pattern, and motif integration.

The findings show that comfort and fit received 28% of feedback, pattern clarity 24%, durability 20%, color vibrancy 16%, and modern motif integration 12%. Furthermore, traditional batik motifs (36%) remain central, while floral and geometric motifs received 20%, guiding design adaptation choices effectively. The outcome of this research demonstrates that adapting woven fabrics onto batik enhances aesthetic appeal, functional performance, and consumer satisfaction, providing a practical framework for modern personal clothing that respects cultural traditions and meets contemporary needs. Based on the result obtained from this research, it was recommended that designers and artisans should prioritize the selection of fabrics that are compatible with batik dyeing, such as cotton and silk, to ensure both comfort and visual appeal.

1.1 Introduction

Batik is a traditional textile art that is characterized by the application of wax-resist dyeing techniques to fabric, creating intricate patterns and designs that hold cultural and symbolic meanings (Hidayat, 2019). Traditionally, batik is produced on natural fibers such as cotton or silk, which are selected for their absorbency and ability to hold dye. Woven fabric, on the other hand, is a textile material made by interlacing threads in a perpendicular pattern, providing structure, durability, and varied texture that influences how garments drape and fit the wearer (Santoso & Lestari, 2020). The adaptation of woven fabric on batik is therefore an approach that seeks to integrate the technical and physical properties of woven textiles with the aesthetic and cultural characteristics of batik designs.

This chapter will address the background information that motivated this study, the challenges that prompted it, its aim, and its objectives as a preface to subsequent sections of the study. 1.2 Background of Study

Batik is a traditional textile art that has deep cultural roots and social significance in many parts of Indonesia and beyond. According to Hidayat (2019), batik is defined as a textile technique that uses a wax resist dyeing process to create patterns that are often symbolic and meaningful. Batik production involves drawing or stamping wax onto fabric before dyeing it, which results in vibrant designs after the wax is removed. According to Rahmawati (2021), the distinctive feature of batik lies not only in its visual appeal but also in its narrative value, often representing community identities, history, and customs. These cultural and artistic merits have made batik a cherished craft with protective measures and international recognition.

While the aesthetic essence of batik is well documented, the adaptation of woven fabric into batik clothing remains an area that has received less structured attention. According to Santoso and Lestari (2020), woven fabrics are textiles created by interlacing two sets of yarns at right angles, forming materials that are stable, durable, and suitable for a wide range of clothing applications. They reported that compared to other fabric constructions, woven textiles provide predictable behavior in terms of stretch, strength, and drape. These properties are important in personal clothing because they influence fit, comfort, and how garments perform during wear. According to Nurhadi (2018), integrating woven fabric characteristics with batik production offers opportunities for innovation, enabling batik designers and makers to produce garments that are both culturally rich and functionally appropriate for everyday use.

However, research shows that batik garments often prioritize ornamental appearance over the performance qualities required in personal clothing. According to Sutanto and Wibowo (2021), many contemporary batik products are designed with surface aesthetics at the forefront, while functional aspects such as breathability, flexibility, and comfort receive insufficient consideration. They stated that this imbalance results in clothing that may be visually striking but less suitable for diverse daily activities, especially when compared to garments produced using conventional fashion textiles. According to Rahmawati (2021), wearability challenges in batik clothing often stem from the choice of base fabrics and processes that make garments stiff, heavy, or less flexible, limiting their desirability beyond special occasions or ceremonial use.

The technical behavior of fabric is essential in clothing design because it dictates how a garment interacts with the wearer's body and environment. According to Santoso and Lestari (2020), performance attributes such as moisture management, tensile strength, and drape are influenced directly by the fabric's structure and fiber content. For instance, cotton woven fabrics are known for their comfort and breathability, while blended or engineered textiles can provide additional stretch and resilience. When batik production neglects these inherent qualities, the resulting garment may feel restrictive or less comfortable, especially in warm climates or during active movement. According to Nurhadi (2018), adapting batik techniques to suit woven fabric characteristics is not simply a matter of applying dye to a new substrate, but a thoughtful process that integrates design, material science, and cultural values.

This study is set against the backdrop of the increasing demand for personal clothing that combines cultural authenticity with modern functionality, where traditional batik garments are often limited by fabric comfort, durability, and contemporary design appeal. The need to adapt woven fabrics onto batik arises from challenges such as maintaining pattern integrity, enhancing color retention, improving garment wearability, and meeting consumer expectations for both aesthetic and practical qualities.


1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that many traditional batik textiles in fashion today are produced without integrated considerations of woven fabric characteristics that are important for comfort, adaptability, and everyday wearability. While batik is widely recognized for its aesthetic and cultural value, there is a growing concern that contemporary batik clothing does not sufficiently address the functional requirements of personal clothing, leading to garments that are less comfortable or less suitable for diverse daily activities (Hadi, 2018).

Furthermore, traditional batik processes often prioritize design motifs and artistic expression, but this emphasis is sometimes at the expense of fabric performance attributes such as breathability, tensile strength, and drape when worn as personal clothing. Poor integration of woven fabric characteristics into batik garments is observable in instances where garments are fragile, overly stiff, or lack flexibility, which diminishes usability and reduces market appeal (Rohmah & Istiqomah, 2020). The lack of systematic adaptation of woven fabric properties to the batik making process leads to a disconnect between artistic value and everyday wear needs.

It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to understand how woven fabric adaptation is applied in batik production for personal clothing to fulfill both cultural significance and practical performance requirements.


1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to investigate and establish effective methods for integrating woven fabric characteristics into batik production for personal clothing, ensuring improved wearability, durability, and aesthetic quality. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To identify the challenges in the current batik production system related to fabric selection and garment functionality.
  2. To evaluate the performance characteristics of different woven fabrics when applied in batik clothing.
  3. To analyze how traditional batik techniques can be modified to enhance the integration of woven fabrics.
  4. To develop guidelines for producing batik garments that are both culturally authentic and functionally suitable for daily wear.
  5. To assess consumer satisfaction with batik clothing produced using adapted woven fabrics.

1.5 Research Questions

Based on the stated objectives, the study seeks to answer the following questions:

1.6 Research Hypothesis

Based on the objectives, the study will test the following hypotheses:

Hypothesis 2:

1.7 Significance of Study

It is believed that at the completion of the study, the research will provide practical strategies for integrating woven fabrics into batik production, leading to garments that are more comfortable, durable, and visually appealing.

Furthermore, artisans and producers will be able to improve product quality, durability, and comfort of batik clothing. In addition, consumers will benefit from more functional, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing garments.

Lastly, the study will serve as a resource for designers, producers, and manufacturers in optimizing batik clothing for everyday wear. It will also enhance the marketability of batik garments and contribute to the preservation and modernization of traditional textile heritage.


1.8 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is confined to batik clothing produced by selected textile companies in Lagos State, Nigeria, examining woven fabric types, dyeing processes, and production techniques. The research evaluates garment performance, consumer feedback, and market acceptability within this area.

On the other hand, results may not fully represent batik production practices outside Lagos or in industrial-scale operations.


1.9 Definition of Terms

Batik: A traditional textile art using wax-resist dyeing techniques to produce patterned fabrics, often imbued with cultural symbolism (Hidayat, 2019).

Woven Fabric: Textiles created by interlacing two sets of yarns at right angles, offering durability, structure, and specific performance characteristics in garment construction (Santoso & Lestari, 2020).
