1.1 Introduction
Air pollution is defined as the presence of substances in the atmosphere, whether solid, liquid, or gaseous, that are harmful to human health, the environment, or the climate (World Health Organization, 2022). These substances, often referred to as pollutants, include particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and heavy metals. Air pollution is increasingly recognized as a major environmental risk factor, contributing to a range of health problems such as respiratory infections, cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, and adverse developmental outcomes in children (United Nations Environment Programme, 2019).
In urban and industrialized areas, air pollution is often exacerbated by human activities such as vehicle emissions, industrial processes, open burning of waste, and energy production. In developing countries, weak regulatory frameworks and inadequate monitoring systems further worsen the exposure of populations to harmful air pollutants. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that approximately 7 million deaths annually are linked to air pollution, highlighting its significance as a public health concern (World Health Organization, 2022).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Air pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of the twenty-first century, affecting millions of people worldwide and contributing significantly to the global burden of disease. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is defined as the presence of substances in the atmosphere that are harmful to human health or the environment, including particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds. These pollutants originate from a variety of sources such as industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, gas flaring, and the burning of fossil fuels (World Health Organization, 2022).
Globally, studies have reported that air pollution contributes to an estimated 7 million premature deaths annually, with low- and middle-income countries bearing the heaviest burden. Researchers have asserted that the health impacts of air pollution are far-reaching, affecting both short-term and long-term health outcomes. Short-term exposure to high levels of pollutants is associated with respiratory infections, eye irritation, and exacerbation of asthma, while long-term exposure contributes to cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and adverse developmental effects in children (United Nations Environment Programme, 2019).
In Nigeria, air pollution has emerged as a significant public health concern, particularly in urban and industrial centers such as Port Harcourt. Port Harcourt is the capital of Rivers State, a major hub of Nigeria's oil and gas industry. The city has experienced a persistent black soot crisis, which has become a source of public concern and anxiety among residents. According to the Federal Ministry of Environment Nigeria, the soot pollution in Port Harcourt is primarily linked to illegal refining activities, gas flaring, industrial emissions, and the uncontrolled burning of petroleum-related materials. The Ministry reported that soot particles are carried by wind and settle on buildings, roads, vegetation, and water bodies, contaminating daily life and creating severe environmental degradation (Federal Ministry of Environment Nigeria, 2018).
Researchers have contended that the fine particulate matter in the soot, particularly PM2.5, is highly hazardous due to its ability to penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, leading to serious health complications. Several hospital-based studies in Port Harcourt have affirmed that there has been an increase in respiratory illnesses, including asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other lung-related conditions, coinciding with the onset of the soot crisis.
A study conducted by Okafor et al. (2020) stated that children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the effects of soot pollution, with reported cases of persistent coughing, wheezing, eye irritation, and skin problems among residents. Environmental scientists have reported that despite public outcry, the regulatory framework for air quality management in Port Harcourt remains weak and enforcement is inconsistent. It has been asserted that government interventions such as crackdowns on illegal refineries and regulation of industrial emissions are often reactive rather than preventive. On the other hand, many residents continue their daily routines without adequate protective measures due to limited awareness of the long-term health risks associated with soot exposure (UNEP, 2019). This study is set against the backdrop of the need to comprehensively understand the sources, extent, and health impacts of air pollution in Port Harcourt.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that air pollution has become one of the most serious environmental and public health challenges globally. The rapid growth of industrial activities, urbanization, and energy consumption has significantly increased the emission of harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is responsible for millions of premature deaths each year, largely due to its contribution to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. In many developing countries, weak environmental regulations and poor monitoring systems have worsened the situation, exposing millions of people to unhealthy air conditions (World Health Organization, 2022).
In Port Harcourt, located in Rivers State, Nigeria, the situation has taken a particularly alarming dimension with the emergence of the soot crisis. Since around 2016, residents have reported the constant presence of black soot particles settling on surfaces, buildings, vehicles, and even human skin. The soot pollution is largely associated with illegal crude oil refining, gas flaring, industrial emissions, and the burning of petroleum-related materials in the region. Studies have indicated that prolonged exposure to soot particles, especially fine particulate matter such as PM2.5, is strongly linked to respiratory infections, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other serious health complications (UNEP, 2019).
Furthermore, public awareness regarding the long-term health consequences of soot exposure remains relatively low. Many residents continue to carry out their daily activities without adequate protective measures, partly due to limited information about the severity of the problem. The absence of consistent environmental monitoring and comprehensive health impact studies has also made it difficult for policymakers to design effective and sustainable solutions to address the crisis. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine air pollution and its impact on public health with particular focus on the soot crisis in Port Harcourt.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of air pollution on public health in Port Harcourt with particular focus on the soot crisis.
The specific objectives of the study are to:
- Determine the health effects associated with exposure to soot pollution among residents.
- Examine the major sources of soot-related air pollution in Port Harcourt.
- Assess the level of public awareness regarding the health risks of soot pollution.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing environmental control measures in addressing soot pollution in Port Harcourt.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- What are the major sources of soot-related air pollution in Port Harcourt?
- What health effects are associated with exposure to soot pollution among residents of Port Harcourt?
- What is the level of public awareness regarding the health risks of soot pollution?
- How effective are the existing environmental control measures in addressing soot pollution in Port Harcourt?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H0: There is no significant relationship between exposure to soot pollution and the occurrence of respiratory health problems among residents of Port Harcourt.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between exposure to soot pollution and the occurrence of respiratory health problems among residents of Port Harcourt.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide verified information on how public relations strategies such as awareness campaigns, stakeholder engagement, and information dissemination contribute to reducing cult-related activities within tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Furthermore, the findings will assist university management and administrators in understanding the importance of effective communication and relationship management in addressing cultism among students.
Lastly, the research will provide useful information to security agencies and school authorities on how structured communication strategies will support efforts aimed at preventing cult-related violence within campuses.
1.8 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The scope of the research is focused on air pollution and its impact on public health in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.
The study is limited to selected communities within Port Harcourt due to time and financial constraints, and the findings may not represent the entire population of Rivers State.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Air Pollution:
Air pollution refers to the presence of harmful substances such as gases, chemicals, and particulate matter in the atmosphere that pose risks to human health and the environment. These pollutants often originate from industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, burning of fossil fuels, and other human activities (World Health Organization, 2022).
Soot:
Soot is a black powdery substance composed mainly of fine carbon particles produced from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels such as crude oil, diesel, and other petroleum products. In Port Harcourt, soot particles are largely associated with illegal crude oil refining and gas flaring activities (Federal Ministry of Environment, 2018).
Particulate Matter (PM2.5):
Particulate matter refers to tiny solid or liquid particles suspended in the air. PM2.5 specifically describes particles that are less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. These particles are extremely dangerous because they are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream (United Nations Environment Programme, 2019).
Public Health:
Public health refers to the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of populations through disease prevention, environmental control, health education, and organized community efforts (World Health Organization, 2022).
