    1.0 Introduction

    1.1 Background of Study

    Historically, production scheduling and control have evolved from traditional manual systems to sophisticated digital solutions. The emergence of advanced manufacturing technologies, including Enterprise Resource Planning, Just-In-Time production, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven scheduling, has significantly improved the efficiency and accuracy of manufacturing processes (Heizer & Render, 2019). Production scheduling and control play a crucial role in the manufacturing industry, ensuring that operations run smoothly, efficiently, and cost-effectively. As manufacturing firms strive to meet market demands, optimize resource utilization, and reduce lead times, the need for effective scheduling and control mechanisms has become increasingly vital (Stevenson, 2021). Production scheduling involves the systematic planning and organization of production activities to enhance efficiency, while production control ensures adherence to schedules and quality standards (Chase et al., 2020).

    Nahmias & Olsen (2020) stated that effective production scheduling and control contribute to increased operational efficiency, reduced production costs, and improved product quality. Studies have shown that industries that implement well-structured scheduling and control systems experience lower production waste and higher profitability (Nahmias & Olsen, 2020). However, improper scheduling can lead to bottlenecks, delays, and resource underutilization, affecting the overall performance of a manufacturing firm (Krajewski et al., 2021).

    According to Stevenson (2021), production scheduling refers to the process of organizing, controlling, and optimizing work and workloads in a manufacturing setting. It involves the allocation of raw materials, equipment, and human resources to maximize efficiency while meeting customer demands. Similarly, production control ensures that manufacturing processes adhere to planned schedules, minimizing delays and inefficiencies (Chase et al., 2020). In the highly competitive manufacturing industry, effective production scheduling and control contribute significantly to productivity, cost reduction, and customer satisfaction. Poor scheduling may result in production bottlenecks, resource wastage, and increased operational costs (Heizer & Render, 2019). Therefore, this study evaluates the effectiveness of production scheduling and control in a manufacturing industry, identifying challenges, best practices, and the impact on overall production performance.


    1.2 Statement of Problems

    Investigation revealed that many industries still rely on outdated scheduling methods that do not align with modern manufacturing demands. The lack of real-time data integration and automation further complicates production processes, resulting in inconsistent output and missed deadlines (Nahmias & Olsen, 2020).

    Furthermore, production scheduling is often affected by external factors such as fluctuating market demand, material shortages, and regulatory constraints, which limit the efficiency of control mechanisms (Chase et al., 2020). It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of production scheduling and control in a manufacturing industry.


    1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study

    The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of production scheduling and control in a manufacturing industry, identifying key factors that influence its efficiency and the challenges that hinder optimal performance.

    To achieve this aim, the study has the following objectives:

    1. To assess the impact of production scheduling and control on manufacturing efficiency and productivity.
    2. To identify the challenges faced in implementing effective production scheduling and control in the manufacturing industry.
    3. To examine the role of technology in improving production scheduling and control processes.
    4. To evaluate the relationship between production scheduling, resource utilization, and cost management.
    5. To recommend strategies for enhancing production scheduling and control to optimize manufacturing performance.

    1.4 Research Questions

    Based on the stated objectives, this study seeks to answer the following research questions:

    • How does production scheduling and control impact manufacturing efficiency and productivity?
    • What are the key challenges faced in implementing effective production scheduling and control in the manufacturing industry?
    • In what ways does technology contribute to improving production scheduling and control processes?
    • What is the relationship between production scheduling, resource utilization, and cost management?
    • What are the strategies for enhancing production scheduling and control to optimize manufacturing performance?

    1.5 Research Hypotheses

    Based on the stated objectives, this study seeks to answer the following research questions:

    • H01: Production scheduling and control have no significant impact on manufacturing efficiency and productivity.
    • H02: Challenges in implementing effective production scheduling and control negatively affect manufacturing performance.
    • H03: The adoption of advanced technology improves production scheduling and control processes.
    • H04: There is a significant relationship between production scheduling, resource utilization, and cost management.

    1.6 Significance of Study

    The outcome of this research will benefit manufacturing industries by identifying common challenges in scheduling and control, offering practical solutions to improve operational efficiency. Furthermore, policy makers and regulatory bodies will find the study useful in formulating policies that encourage industries to adopt advanced production scheduling techniques, ensuring compliance with industry standards and improving the overall competitiveness of the manufacturing sector.

    Academically, this study will contribute to existing literature on production management, serving as a useful reference for researchers, students, and industry professionals interested in improving manufacturing processes. Policymakers and business leaders will also find the study valuable in formulating strategies that promote sustainable and efficient production practices.


    1.7 Scope of Study

    This study will focus on the evaluation of production scheduling and control in a manufacturing industry, with a specific emphasis on Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana Plant, Kogi State, Nigeria. The study will be limited to the operations of Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana Plant, focusing on its production processes, workforce coordination, and management strategies.

    Data will be collected from production managers, employees, and other key stakeholders involved in manufacturing operations. While the findings may be applicable to other industries, the study will specifically address challenges and solutions relevant to the Nigerian manufacturing context.


    1.8 Limitations of the Study

    During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

    1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
    2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
    3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

    1.9 Definition of Terms

    Production Scheduling: This refers to the process of planning and organizing manufacturing activities to ensure efficient use of resources, timely production, and minimal delays. It involves setting timelines for tasks, coordinating materials, and optimizing workflow to meet production goals (Nahmias & Olsen, 2015).

    Production Control: This is the process of monitoring and regulating production activities to ensure that they align with planned schedules and quality standards. It includes tracking progress, adjusting schedules when necessary, and addressing any disruptions in the manufacturing process (Stevenson, 2020).

    Manufacturing Industry: This refers to the sector that involves the production of goods using labor, machines, and raw materials. It encompasses industries such as automobile, cement, textiles, and food processing, among others, where production scheduling and control play a crucial role in operational efficiency (Heizer, Render, & Munson, 2019).

    Efficiency in Manufacturing: Efficiency in manufacturing refers to the ability of a production system to minimize waste, optimize resources, and maximize output while maintaining quality standards. It is often measured in terms of productivity, cost-effectiveness, and adherence to schedules (Krajewski, Malhotra, & Ritzman, 2016).

    Resource Utilization: This involves the effective use of raw materials, labor, machinery, and energy to ensure maximum productivity with minimal waste. Proper resource utilization is critical for achieving operational success in manufacturing (Slack, Brandon-Jones, & Johnston, 2016).

    Cost Management: This refers to the process of planning, controlling, and reducing costs associated with production without compromising quality. It ensures that manufacturing companies remain profitable while meeting market demands (Drury, 2018).

    Technology in Production Scheduling: This refers to the use of software, automation, and artificial intelligence to optimize manufacturing schedules, reduce errors, and improve overall efficiency. Digital tools such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems play a significant role in modern production scheduling (Monostori et al., 2016).
