Analysis of Domestic Solid Waste Management Strategies


Domestic solid waste management strategies refer to the organized methods used in handling household-generated waste through collection, recycling, segregation, treatment, and disposal to ensure environmental safety and public health protection. The study aims to analyze domestic solid waste management strategies and assess their effectiveness, challenges, and improvement measures in the study area. The growing volume of household waste, combined with improper disposal practices such as open dumping and weak recycling culture, necessitated this study. Increasing environmental pollution and public health risks linked to poor waste handling also informed the need to examine existing strategies and identify practical solutions for improved waste management efficiency.

Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 150 respondents, supported with observation and relevant secondary sources such as journals and environmental reports. The findings show government waste collection at 28.0%, private services at 25.3%, recycling at 18.7%, segregation at 16.0%, and open dumping at 12.0%. Effectiveness ratings include 30.7% effective, 28.0% moderate, and 22.6% ineffective. Challenges include poor infrastructure at 25.3% and irregular collection at 24.0%, while 38.7% reported low participation. Furthermore, awareness campaigns at 29.3% were the top improvement strategy.

The outcome of this research shows that domestic solid waste management is moderately effective but constrained by infrastructural and behavioral challenges requiring improved awareness, infrastructure, and policy enforcement. Based on the result obtained from this research, it was recommended that public awareness campaigns should be intensified to educate households on proper waste segregation, recycling practices, and the environmental consequences of improper waste disposal. Also, private sector participation should be expanded in waste collection and recycling activities to complement government efforts and improve overall efficiency of the waste management system.

1.1 Introduction

Domestic solid waste management refers to the systematic collection, segregation, transportation, treatment, and disposal of waste generated from households and residential activities in a manner that minimizes environmental impact and protects public health. It involves a range of strategies aimed at reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills through recycling, reuse, composting, and other sustainable practices (United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, 2021). In modern urban settings, domestic solid waste has become one of the fastest-growing environmental challenges due to population growth, increased consumption patterns, and changing lifestyles.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.


1.2 Background of Study

Domestic solid waste management is widely recognized as a fundamental component of environmental sustainability, urban planning, and public health protection. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, 2021), solid waste refers to discarded materials generated from human activities, including household, commercial, and industrial sources, which require proper handling to prevent environmental degradation. Domestic solid waste, specifically, originates from residential settings and includes organic waste such as food remnants, inorganic waste such as plastics and metals, and hazardous household items. The management of these wastes has become increasingly important due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and changing consumption patterns across both developed and developing regions.

According to Adebayo and Afolabi (2019), the generation of domestic solid waste has increased significantly in urban areas, largely due to rising living standards and increased use of packaged goods. They reported that many cities in developing countries are struggling to cope with the volume of waste produced daily, resulting in inefficient collection systems and uncontrolled disposal practices.

Ogbonna, Ekwe, and Nwankwo (2020) asserted that poor waste management practices in urban communities contribute significantly to environmental pollution and public health risks. They stated that indiscriminate dumping of waste in open spaces, drainage channels, and water bodies leads to flooding, contamination of water sources, and the spread of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and malaria.

Ayodele, Williams, and Ogunseitan (2022) asserted that, solid waste management strategies such as recycling, composting, incineration, and sanitary landfilling are essential for reducing the environmental impact of waste. They affirmed that integrated waste management systems, which combine multiple strategies, offer a more sustainable approach compared to traditional methods of open dumping and burning. However, they also noted that the implementation of such systems is often hindered by institutional weaknesses, lack of public awareness, and insufficient investment in waste management infrastructure.

UNEP (2021) reported that waste segregation at source is one of the most effective strategies for improving domestic solid waste management outcomes. It was stated that when households separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, it becomes easier to recycle materials and reduce the volume of waste that ends up in landfills. However, in many developing regions, waste segregation practices is still at a low level due to limited public education and lack of enforcement of environmental regulations (UNEP, 2021).

Adeyemo and Oladipo (2018) reported that, informal waste pickers play a significant role in waste recovery and recycling in many urban centers. They contended that while the informal sector contributes to reducing the volume of waste in landfills, it operates under unsafe and unregulated conditions. In addition, Ogbonna et al. (2020) affirmed that community participation is a critical factor in the success of domestic solid waste management strategies. They reported that when residents are actively involved in waste reduction initiatives, compliance with proper waste disposal practices improves significantly. However, they also noted that public participation is often limited by low environmental awareness and lack of incentives to encourage sustainable behavior.

This study is set against the backdrop of increasing domestic solid waste generation, inadequate management systems, environmental degradation, and the urgent need for sustainable waste management strategies that can effectively address these challenges.


1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that public awareness of proper waste segregation and recycling practices remains low, which increases the burden on final disposal sites and reduces the possibility of resource recovery from waste streams (Adebayo & Afolabi, 2019). Also, the absence of effective policy enforcement and monitoring mechanisms worsens the situation, as environmental regulations is often poorly implemented at the local government level (UNEP, 2021).

In many urban centers, the rapid increase in domestic waste generation without a corresponding improvement in waste management infrastructure is creating severe environmental stress. The inability of waste management agencies to adapt to increasing demand is further compounded by poor public participation in waste reduction initiatives. Households often do not practice waste separation at source, making downstream processing more difficult and costly.

Furthermore, many communities still rely heavily on open dumping and burning of waste, which contributes significantly to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions (Ayodele et al., 2022). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine domestic solid waste management strategies, assess their effectiveness.


1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to analyze domestic solid waste management strategies and evaluate their effectiveness in ensuring sustainable environmental management. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To examine the existing domestic solid waste management strategies in the study area.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of waste collection and disposal systems.
  3. To identify the challenges affecting proper waste management practices.
  4. To evaluate the level of public participation in waste management activities.
  5. To propose improved strategies for sustainable domestic solid waste management.

1.5 Research Questions

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

  • What are the existing domestic solid waste management strategies in the study area?
  • How effective are the current waste collection and disposal systems?
  • What are the challenges affecting domestic solid waste management practices?
  • What is the level of public participation in waste management activities?
  • What strategies can improve sustainable domestic solid waste management?

1.6 Research Hypotheses

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

Hypothesis 1

  • Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no significant relationship between waste collection systems and effective domestic solid waste management
  • Alternative Hypothesis (H1): There is a significant relationship between waste collection systems and effective domestic solid waste management

Hypothesis 2

  • Null Hypothesis (H0): Public participation does not significantly affect domestic solid waste management strategies
  • Alternative Hypothesis (H1): Public participation significantly affects domestic solid waste management strategies

Hypothesis 3

  • Null Hypothesis (H0): Waste segregation practices do not significantly improve waste management outcomes
  • Alternative Hypothesis (H1): Waste segregation practices significantly improve waste management outcomes

1.7 Significance of Study

It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide relevant data on the effectiveness of domestic solid waste management systems in reducing environmental pollution and improving sanitation conditions. Also, the outcome of this research will assist government agencies in improving waste management policies and strengthening enforcement mechanisms for environmental protection.

Furthermore, this research will support environmental health practitioners in understanding the impact of waste disposal practices on public health conditions. In addition, the study will provide households with practical knowledge on proper waste segregation and responsible disposal practices.

Lastly, the outcome of this research will contribute to academic literature by providing empirical evidence on domestic solid waste management strategies and their effectiveness.


1.8 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The scope of the research is focused on the analysis of domestic solid waste management strategies in Lagos State, Nigeria.

The study is limited to selected residential communities within Lagos State due to geographical and logistical constraints, and it does not cover industrial or hazardous waste management systems.


1.9 Definition of Terms

Domestic Solid Waste:

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, 2021), domestic solid waste refers to non-liquid waste generated from household activities, including food waste, plastics, paper, and other discarded materials that require proper management to prevent environmental hazards.

Waste Management:

According to Ayodele et al. (2022), waste management is the systematic process of collecting, transporting, processing, recycling, and disposing of waste materials in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

Recycling:

According to Adebayo and Afolabi (2019), recycling is the process of converting waste materials into reusable products to reduce environmental pollution and conserve natural resources.

Waste Segregation:

According to Ogbonna et al. (2020), waste segregation refers to the separation of waste into different categories such as biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials at the point of generation for effective treatment and disposal.

Environmental Pollution:

According to UNEP (2021), environmental pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the environment that causes adverse effects on air, water, soil, and human health.
