ABSTRACT


Industrial Training Scheme is a practical learning programme designed to expose students to real workplace environments where they acquire technical skills, professional experience, and knowledge required for employment. The study was carried out to appraise the Industrial Training Scheme in Nigerian polytechnics using Federal Polytechnic Oko as a case study. The motivation for embarking on this research was based on the need to understand how effectively the Industrial Training Scheme prepares polytechnic students for professional responsibilities. The study was motivated by concerns relating to placement difficulties, supervision challenges, limited access to modern facilities, and the need to improve industry participation in students' practical training experiences. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 210 students from the Engineering, Statistics, and Computer Science departments of Federal Polytechnic Oko. The data collected were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and Chi-square statistical techniques for testing the hypotheses.

The findings revealed that the Industrial Training Scheme was considered effective by respondents, with 303 responses recorded under “Very Effective” and 284 responses under “Effective.” The findings further showed that the scheme contributes to practical skills development, with 333 responses indicating “Very High Extent” and 291 responses indicating “High Extent.” Furthermore, 356 respondents strongly agreed and 292 agreed that challenges such as placement difficulties, inadequate supervision, limited equipment, and financial constraints affect implementation. The findings also showed that 348 respondents strongly agreed and 308 agreed that industrial training improves students' employment readiness.

The study concludes that the Industrial Training Scheme plays an important role in developing practical skills and preparing students for employment. The outcome of this research provides useful information for improving industrial training through stronger institution-industry relationships, better supervision, adequate funding, and improved training facilities. Based on the result obtained from this research, it was recommended that the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and relevant stakeholders should provide adequate support for the effective implementation of the Industrial Training Scheme. Funding should be improved to support supervision, student welfare, and other activities required for successful industrial training.



1.1 Introduction

Industrial Training Scheme refers to a structured practical training programme designed to expose students to real work environments where they apply theoretical knowledge, develop occupational skills, and gain professional experience relevant to their chosen fields of study. The scheme provides an opportunity for students to understand workplace practices, industrial procedures, and the expectations of employers before entering the labour market. According to Olaitan and Nwachukwu, industrial training serves as an important component of technical and vocational education because it strengthens the relationship between academic learning and practical application (Olaitan and Nwachukwu, 2019).

The Industrial Training Scheme in Nigeria is implemented through the Industrial Training Fund and involves the placement of students from tertiary institutions in relevant organizations for supervised industrial experience. The programme was established to promote the development of skilled manpower by exposing students to modern workplace operations and encouraging collaboration between educational institutions and industries (Industrial Training Fund, 2023).

1.2 Background of Study

Industrial Training Scheme is a structured practical experience programme designed to expose students to real workplace environments where they acquire technical skills, professional knowledge, and occupational competencies related to their fields of study. The scheme provides a link between academic instruction and industrial practice by allowing students to apply classroom theories to actual work situations. According to Industrial Training Fund, industrial training was established to promote the development of skilled manpower through supervised practical exposure, improve students' employability, and strengthen cooperation between educational institutions and industries. The programme has become an important component of technical education because practical competence is required for effective participation in modern industrial activities (Industrial Training Fund, 2023).

According to Okorie (2019), technical and vocational education is designed to produce individuals with relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for economic growth and technological advancement. The author reported that classroom learning alone is insufficient for preparing students for industrial responsibilities because many workplace skills require direct experience and continuous interaction with professional practices. Similarly, Yusuf and Afolabi (2020) asserted that polytechnic education contributes significantly to national development by focusing on skill acquisition, innovation, and practical training. The researchers stated that industrial exposure improves students' understanding of workplace operations and enables them to develop confidence in performing professional tasks.

The Industrial Training Scheme serves as an avenue for Nigerian polytechnic students to gain experience outside the academic environment. According to Ibrahim and Musa (2021), industrial attachment provides students with opportunities to operate modern equipment, observe organizational procedures, and understand the expectations of employers. The study affirmed that students who participate effectively in industrial training develop better problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and adaptability compared with those who lack practical exposure. In the same vein, Chukwuemeka and Obi (2022) reported that the relevance of industrial training is connected to its ability to reduce the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in institutions and the practical requirements of the labour market.

Nigerian polytechnics have a major responsibility in producing skilled manpower capable of supporting industrial and technological development. According to Eze and Okeke (2022), polytechnic institutions are established to provide middle-level technical manpower through programmes that combine theoretical instruction with practical activities. The researchers contended that the effectiveness of this educational approach depends on the availability of functional training facilities, competent instructors, and effective partnerships with industries. Furthermore, Adebayo and Adesope (2020) stated that collaboration between academic institutions and industrial organizations is necessary for ensuring that students receive training that reflects current workplace demands.

The implementation of the Industrial Training Scheme in Nigerian polytechnics has experienced several challenges that affect its effectiveness. According to Nwankwo (2021), some students encounter difficulties in securing appropriate industrial placements because of limited acceptance by organizations and inadequate coordination between institutions and employers. The study reported that students placed in unsuitable organizations may receive limited practical experience, which reduces the expected benefits of the programme. Moreover, Adeyemi (2020) asserted that inadequate supervision and poor communication among stakeholders remain major factors affecting the successful implementation of industrial attachment programmes in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Similarly, technological changes within industries require continuous adjustment of training methods and academic programmes. According to Ojo and Bello (2022), rapid advancement in technology has created a need for stronger relationships between polytechnics and industries to ensure that students are trained using relevant equipment and modern procedures. The researchers affirmed that outdated facilities and limited access to current industrial practices may reduce students' ability to compete effectively in the labour market. Supporting this position, Okafor and Nwosu (2021) reported that effective monitoring of students during industrial attachment is essential because proper supervision ensures that trainees participate in meaningful activities related to their areas of specialization.

The success of the Industrial Training Scheme depends on the commitment of students, educational institutions, industries, and regulatory bodies. According to Mohammed and Garba (2023), effective industrial training requires adequate funding, proper planning, regular evaluation, and active participation from all stakeholders. The study stated that when these conditions are achieved, industrial training becomes a valuable mechanism for improving graduate employability and supporting national economic development. Correspondingly, Federal Polytechnic Oko continues to participate in the scheme by providing students with opportunities for practical industrial experience, making it necessary to examine the effectiveness of the programme within the institution.

The appraisal of the Industrial Training Scheme at Federal Polytechnic Oko is important because it provides an understanding of the extent to which the programme achieves its objectives, the challenges affecting its implementation, and possible ways of improving its outcomes. Evaluating the scheme will provide useful information on students' experiences, institutional support mechanisms, industry participation, and the relationship between academic training and workplace requirements.

Relatedly, examining the programme within the context of Nigerian polytechnics will contribute to discussions on improving technical education and producing graduates with relevant skills for national development. This study is set against the backdrop of assessing the effectiveness, challenges, and prospects of the Industrial Training Scheme in Nigerian polytechnics, with particular reference to Federal Polytechnic Oko.


1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that the connection between polytechnic institutions and industries requires improvement to ensure that the Industrial Training Scheme meets its intended purpose. The rapid changes in technology and industrial practices require continuous curriculum adjustment and stronger partnerships between educational institutions and employers. When students are trained using outdated facilities or placed in organizations that do not align with their areas of study, the expected improvement in employability skills may not be fully achieved (Eze & Okeke, 2022).

Furthermore, some students assigned to industrial organizations are often given routine tasks that provide little opportunity for skill development, reducing the value of the training experience. On the other hand, some industries are reluctant to accept students for training because of operational demands, safety concerns, and limited incentives, which affects the availability of suitable training placements. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to appraise the Industrial Training Scheme in Nigerian polytechnics, using Federal Polytechnic Oko as a case study.


1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to appraise the Industrial Training Scheme in Nigerian polytechnics, with particular reference to Federal Polytechnic Oko.

The specific objectives of this research are to:

  1. Examine the level of effectiveness of the Industrial Training Scheme at Federal Polytechnic Oko.
  2. Determine the extent to which the Industrial Training Scheme contributes to students' practical skills development.
  3. Identify the challenges affecting the implementation of the Industrial Training Scheme at Federal Polytechnic Oko.
  4. Examine the relationship between industrial training experience and students' readiness for employment.
  5. Determine strategies for improving the effectiveness of the Industrial Training Scheme in Nigerian polytechnics.

1.5 Research Questions

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

  • What is the level of effectiveness of the Industrial Training Scheme at Federal Polytechnic Oko?
  • To what extent does the Industrial Training Scheme contribute to students' practical skills development?
  • What are the challenges affecting the implementation of the Industrial Training Scheme at Federal Polytechnic Oko?

1.6 Research Hypotheses

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

Hypothesis One

  • H0: The Industrial Training Scheme has no significant effect on students' practical skills development at Federal Polytechnic Oko.
  • H1: The Industrial Training Scheme has a significant effect on students' practical skills development at Federal Polytechnic Oko.

Hypothesis Two

  • H0: There is no significant relationship between industrial training experience and students' readiness for employment at Federal Polytechnic Oko.
  • H1: There is a significant relationship between industrial training experience and students' readiness for employment at Federal Polytechnic Oko.

1.7 Significance of Study

It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide information on how the Industrial Training Scheme operates at Federal Polytechnic Oko and identify areas requiring improvement. The study will also help the institution improve the organization and supervision of students' industrial attachment.

Furthermore, the research will help students understand the importance of industrial training in developing practical skills and preparing them for workplace responsibilities. It will also encourage students to participate actively during their industrial attachment.

Lastly, future researchers will have a reference material for studies related to industrial training, technical education, and students' workplace preparation.


1.8 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study covers the Industrial Training Scheme implementation at Federal Polytechnic Oko in Anambra State, Nigeria. It focuses on students' experiences, supervision processes, industrial placement opportunities, and challenges affecting the success of the programme.

The study was limited by factors such as access to complete records, respondents' availability, financial challenges, and time required for data collection. These factors affected the extent of information obtained during the research process.

Industrial Training Scheme:

Industrial Training Scheme refers to a practical training programme that exposes students to real workplace environments where they apply academic knowledge and develop professional skills. Polytechnic:

Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme is a structured industrial attachment programme that allows students to gain practical experience through placement in organizations related to their fields of study. According to Ibrahim and Musa (2021), SIWES helps students develop workplace skills and understand professional practices before graduation.

Practical Skills:
