1.1 Introduction
Guidance and counselling is an organized educational support service designed to assist learners in understanding themselves, making informed decisions, solving personal, social, academic, and career-related problems, and achieving their full potential within and outside the school environment (UNESCO, 2021). In secondary schools, guidance and counselling serves as an essential component of the educational system because it promotes students' emotional stability, academic success, positive behaviour, and career planning. As students encounter various developmental challenges during adolescence, effective guidance and counselling services provide professional support that enables them to cope with these challenges and make responsible life choices.
Teachers play a significant role in ensuring the success of guidance and counselling programmes in schools. Beyond classroom instruction, teachers interact with students daily and are often the first to observe behavioural, emotional, academic, or social problems that may require professional counselling. Their willingness to identify students' needs, refer them to counsellors, cooperate during intervention processes, and encourage students to utilize counselling services greatly determines the effectiveness of school guidance programmes (ASCA, 2022).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Guidance and counselling is an integral component of the educational system because it provides learners with the support required to overcome academic, personal, social, emotional, and career-related challenges. According to Egbo (2015), guidance and counselling is a professional service that assists individuals in understanding themselves, developing their potentials, making informed decisions, and adjusting positively to their environment. The increasing complexity of modern society has exposed students to numerous pressures such as peer influence, substance abuse, examination anxiety, family instability, career uncertainty, and behavioural problems.
Similarly, UNESCO (2021) reported that quality education extends beyond classroom instruction and includes guidance services that promote learners' mental health, social inclusion, academic success, and lifelong development. Guidance and counselling enables students to identify their strengths, recognize their weaknesses, develop self-confidence, and acquire problem-solving skills that contribute to educational achievement. In the same vein, the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2013) asserted that guidance and counselling is an important aspect of secondary education because it supports students in making educational and vocational decisions while promoting discipline, moral values, and responsible citizenship. The National Policy on Education therefore recognizes counselling as one of the essential support services for achieving national educational objectives.
Gibson and Mitchell (2016) stated that guidance and counselling programmes become effective only when all stakeholders within the school system actively participate in their implementation. Teachers occupy a strategic position because they maintain daily contact with students and are often the first to observe changes in learners' behaviour, emotional state, academic performance, and social relationships. The American School Counselor Association (2022) affirmed that effective school counselling programmes depend largely on positive partnerships among teachers, counsellors, school administrators, parents, and the community. When teachers understand the objectives of guidance and counselling, they are more likely to support counselling activities, participate in preventive programmes, and create an environment that encourages students to seek professional assistance.
Supporting this position, Santrock (2018) reported that adolescence represents a critical developmental stage characterized by rapid physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes. During this period, students require consistent guidance from both teachers and professional counsellors to navigate complex life situations successfully. The school environment provides an appropriate platform for structured counselling interventions because students spend a substantial part of their daily lives within educational institutions. Relatedly, Akinade (2016) asserted that many guidance and counselling programmes in developing countries continue to experience implementation challenges despite their recognized importance. Factors such as inadequate funding, shortage of qualified counsellors, poor facilities, limited awareness, negative perceptions, and insufficient administrative support reduce the effectiveness of counselling services in schools. Along the same line, Okobiah and Okorodudu (2014) stated that teachers who perceive counselling as an essential educational service are more likely to encourage students to seek assistance whenever academic, behavioural, or emotional problems arise. On the contrary, teachers with negative attitudes may overlook students' counselling needs or consider such responsibilities outside their professional duties. Such situations often reduce students' access to professional support and may worsen existing educational and psychosocial challenges within the school environment. This study is set against the backdrop of assessing teachers' attitudes towards guidance and counselling services in secondary schools.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that guidance and counselling services are established in secondary schools to support students' academic progress, career development, personal adjustment, and social well-being. However, many schools still experience limited effectiveness of these services because some teachers do not fully appreciate their importance or actively support their implementation. On the other hand, inadequate collaboration between teachers and school counsellors reduces the effectiveness of counselling programmes and weakens efforts aimed at promoting students' overall development (UNESCO, 2021).
Additionally, teachers' attitudes towards guidance and counselling are influenced by factors such as inadequate awareness of counselling objectives, lack of training, misconceptions about the responsibilities of school counsellors, and limited institutional support. In some cases, guidance and counselling activities are viewed as the sole responsibility of counsellors rather than a shared responsibility among all school personnel (American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2022).
Furthermore, despite the recognized importance of guidance and counselling in improving students' educational outcomes, little empirical evidence exists regarding teachers' attitudes towards these services in many secondary schools within Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to assess teachers' attitudes towards guidance and counselling services in secondary schools in Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto State.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to assess teachers' attitudes towards guidance and counselling services in secondary schools in Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto State.

Also, this research will provide school administrators with factual information on teachers' attitudes towards guidance and counselling services, enabling them to strengthen counselling programmes and improve collaboration between teachers and professional counsellors.
Furthermore, the study will benefit teachers through evidence on the importance of maintaining positive attitudes towards guidance and counselling services as part of their responsibility in supporting students' academic, social, and emotional development.
Lastly, the result obtained will serve as a useful source of literature for researchers and students by providing empirical information that can support future studies on teachers' attitudes towards guidance and counselling services in secondary schools.
1.8 Scope of Study
This study focuses on the assessment of teachers' attitudes towards guidance and counselling services in secondary schools in Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto State, Nigeria. The study covers teachers in selected public secondary schools and examines their attitudes, level of awareness, collaboration with school counsellors, factors influencing their attitudes, and challenges affecting the implementation of guidance and counselling services.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
