1.1 Introduction
An automated information system refers to a computer-based system used to manage farming activities such as crop production, livestock monitoring, inventory management, sales recording, irrigation scheduling, and farm planning through digital technologies and computerized processes (Agricultural Recruitment Specialists, 2022). Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the economy because it provides food, raw materials for industries, employment opportunities, and income for individuals and nations. The growth and sustainability of agriculture largely depend on effective farm management practices and accurate information handling. Traditionally, many farming operations have been managed manually through paper records, verbal communication, and physical monitoring of farm activities. Although these methods have been used for many years, they are often associated with problems such as inaccurate record keeping, loss of information, delayed access to data, and poor coordination of farming operations (Agriculture Institute, 2021).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Limitation of the study and Definition of technical terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Agriculture has remained one of the oldest and most important occupations in human society because it contributes significantly to food production, employment generation, economic growth, and industrial development. Farming activities provide raw materials for industries and support the livelihood of millions of people across the world. In many developing countries, agriculture continues to serve as a major source of income and national development. Despite its importance, the agricultural sector still faces several management challenges associated with poor record keeping, ineffective planning, inadequate monitoring of farm operations, and limited access to accurate information. These challenges have increased the need for technological solutions that improve farming management and agricultural productivity.
According to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (2022), digital technologies have become essential tools for improving agricultural productivity, sustainability, and food security. The organization stated that the integration of information systems into agriculture improves efficiency in farm operations and enhances data management processes. Traditional methods of managing farming activities often involve the use of paper files, notebooks, and manual calculations, which are prone to errors, data loss, and delays in information retrieval. As farming activities continue to expand, manual management systems are becoming less effective in handling large volumes of agricultural information.
Defense Acquisition University (2023) asserted that an automated information system refers to a computer-based system designed to collect, process, store, and retrieve information for organizational efficiency and decision-making. In the context of agriculture, automated information systems are designed to assist farmers and farm managers in monitoring and coordinating activities such as crop production, livestock management, inventory control, labor supervision, financial management, irrigation scheduling, and sales tracking. The application of these systems helps to reduce the stress associated with manual operations while improving the accuracy and accessibility of farm records.
According to Agriculture Institute (2021), information management plays a vital role in modern agricultural practices because accurate information supports planning, forecasting, and effective decision-making. The institute reported that many farming organizations still experience difficulties in maintaining accurate records of farm inputs, outputs, expenses, and production activities due to the continued use of manual methods. Poor documentation and inefficient information management often lead to financial losses, wastage of resources, and reduced productivity. In many cases, farm managers find it difficult to monitor daily operations effectively because information is either incomplete, inaccessible, or poorly organized.
The advancement of information and communication technology has brought major transformation to different sectors of the economy, including agriculture. According to Giva Inc. (2021), automated information systems improve operational efficiency by enabling organizations to process and manage information electronically. The company affirmed that automation reduces human errors, improves data accuracy, enhances information security, and increases productivity. In farming management, automation assists in maintaining reliable records of agricultural activities and allows farm managers to access information quickly for operational and strategic decisions (Giva Inc., 2021).
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (2022) reported that digital agriculture and smart farming technologies are becoming increasingly important because of the growing global demand for food and sustainable agricultural practices. The organization stated that modern technologies such as databases, sensors, cloud computing, mobile applications, and automated monitoring systems help farmers improve crop production and resource management. According to HandWiki (2021), automated information systems support the integration of different organizational activities into a centralized system that allows efficient communication and coordination. In farming management, a centralized information system helps to maintain proper records of livestock, crop yield, fertilizer application, pesticide usage, labor activities, and financial transactions. Such systems improve accountability and transparency while reducing the risks associated with manual data handling. Farmers are also able to generate reports and analyze farm performance more efficiently through computerized systems.
Agricultural Recruitment Specialists (2022) stated that automated field systems and agricultural technologies have significantly improved modern farming operations through data-driven management practices. The organization reported that digital systems assist farmers in monitoring crop conditions, managing irrigation systems, and tracking agricultural resources more effectively. The use of computerized systems also helps in reducing operational costs and improving productivity through proper planning and resource allocation.
The importance of automated information systems in farming management has continued to increase due to the complexity of modern agricultural operations. Large-scale farming activities require efficient methods for storing, processing, and analyzing information related to production, distribution, labor management, and financial activities. According to Law Insider (2022), automated systems improve organizational performance because they ensure timely access to accurate information and support effective communication processes. In farming environments, these systems enable farm managers to monitor activities from different locations while maintaining proper coordination of operations.
This study is set against the backdrop of the increasing need for efficient information management systems in agriculture and the growing importance of digital technologies in improving farming operations, productivity, and decision-making processes.
1.3 Statement of Problem
Investigation revealed that following challenges of the existing automated farm management information system, which entails that:
- The existing farming management system is characterized by poor record keeping, making it difficult to maintain accurate information on crop production, livestock management, sales, and inventory.
- The traditional system causes delays in retrieving farm information because records are stored manually in files, notebooks, and paper documents, reducing operational efficiency.
- The old farming management process is prone to errors and duplication due to manual data entry and calculations during farm operations.
- The existing system lacks proper security and preservation of records, exposing farm information to risks such as loss, damage, theft, and unauthorized access.
- The previously used system does not support effective monitoring and coordination of farming activities, affecting planning, supervision, and decision-making processes.
- Lastly, the existing farming management method is time-consuming and increases the workload of farm managers and workers during record processing and reporting.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of the study is to design and implement an automated information system for farming management. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To create an automated information system that improves the management and monitoring of farming activities.
- To develop a centralized database system for storing and retrieving farm records such as crops, livestock, sales, and inventory.
- To design a user-friendly interface that enables farmers and farm managers to efficiently access and manage farm information.
- To implement automated features for tracking farm operations, scheduling activities, and generating reports for decision-making.
- To develop a secure and reliable farming management system that enhances productivity, reduces manual errors, and saves time in farm administration.

The deployment of the proposed system will hold significant relevance in the following ways:

1.6 Scope of Study
This study focuses on the design and implementation of an Automated Information System for Farming Management using selected farms under the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, Lagos State, Nigeria. The study covers farm record management, crop production monitoring, livestock management, inventory control, sales recording, and report generation.
1.7 Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to activities such as farm record management, inventory control, crop monitoring, livestock management, and report generation. The research does not cover advanced technologies such as drone monitoring, artificial intelligence, or satellite-based agricultural systems. The study is also limited by factors such as insufficient finance, inadequate time, limited access to agricultural data, and irregular power supply during the period of research.

Automated Information System:
An automated information system refers to a computer-based system used for collecting, processing, storing, and retrieving information with minimal human intervention. It improves efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility of organizational data (Defense Acquisition University, 2023).
Farming Management:
Farming management refers to the planning, coordination, supervision, and control of agricultural activities such as crop production, livestock management, inventory control, and financial operations in a farm environment (FAO, 2022).
Database:
A database is an organized collection of related information stored electronically for easy access, retrieval, and management within a computer system (Microsoft, 2022).
Information Technology:
Information technology refers to the use of computers, software, communication networks, and digital devices for processing and managing information efficiently (Laudon & Laudon, 2021).
Record Keeping:
Record keeping refers to the process of storing and maintaining important information and documents for future reference and decision-making purposes (Agriculture Institute, 2021).
Farm Inventory:
Farm inventory refers to the materials, equipment, livestock, seeds, fertilizers, and other resources available for agricultural production and farm operations (FAO, 2022).
Livestock Management:
Livestock management refers to the supervision and care of farm animals to ensure proper feeding, health monitoring, breeding, and productivity (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2021).
Crop Production:
Crop production refers to the cultivation and harvesting of agricultural crops for food, commercial, and industrial purposes (Food and Agriculture Organization, 2022).
