ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to examine the Awareness and Reading of Medical Information on Drug and Users Buying Decision. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to investigate the factors influence users buying decision during reading of drug medical information and measure the level of exposure to medical information on drug and users buying decision in the area under study. Investigation revealed that a lot of people indulge in self medication without knowing the side effects of the drugs and degeneration of health has been traced to administration of drugs. People use medicines as per their knowledge, perceptions, and habits. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. A total of 120 (One hundred and twenty) respondents were selected for this study to represent the entire population of the study. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test. This relevance of this study will be beneficial to individuals such as students, pharmacist and drug prescribers by providing accurate and complete information about each medicine before self medication takes place. The study is of benefit to business operators as it would create awareness of the importance of social media (online) advertising on the sale of their products. Based on the findings, the following recommendations are hereby suggested that user's choices about management of their illness and medicine purchase behaviour should be contextualized in the socio-cultural structures where people live their everyday lives.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

Medicine use in community has a multi-factorial influence (WHO, 2014) People often have rational reasons for using medicines irrationally. To correct such irrational use of medicines, health planners need information on irrationality being practiced so that appropriate, effective and feasible strategies can be chosen (Hardon et al., 2004). Desired changes in the use of medicines through an intervention can be brought about when it is based on evidence of its use in the community and the factors influencing it. Traditional medicine is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the sum total of all knowledge and practices, whether explicable or not, used in diagnosing, preventing and eliminating physical, mental or societal inbalances (WHO, 2003).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study.
