Contribution of Animal Biology to Environmental Restoration Efforts in Nigeria


The study was carried out to determine the ecological roles and biological processes of animals in promoting vegetation regeneration, soil fertility, and overall ecosystem stability in degraded Nigerian landscapes. The motivation for this research stems from the need to strengthen restoration strategies by integrating wildlife contributions, addressing gaps in empirical data on how declining animal populations affect ecosystem recovery. Data collection methods included structured questionnaires administered to 150 respondents, field observations of wildlife in restoration sites, and interviews with environmental practitioners and park officials. The findings show that seed dispersal (33.3%), pollination (26.7%), nutrient cycling (20%), herbivory (13.3%), and predation (10%) are primary ecological roles of animals. Furthermore, seed dispersal through feeding (30%), pollination (26.7%), and nutrient cycling (23.3%) are key processes enabling ecosystem recovery. Declines in animal populations reduce seed dispersal (36.7%) and pollination (26.7%). The study concludes that integrating animal biology into restoration enhances ecosystem recovery, improves biodiversity, and maintains ecological balance. Preservation and management of wildlife populations are vital for sustainable environmental restoration in Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended that environmental restoration programs in Nigeria should deliberately integrate the study and management of animal populations into their planning and implementation processes to ensure sustainable ecosystem recovery.

1.1 Introduction

Environmental restoration refers to the process of assisting the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded, damaged, or destroyed as a result of natural events or human activities. It involves deliberate actions aimed at returning an ecosystem to its original structure, functions, and biodiversity while improving its capacity to sustain ecological processes. According to the Society for Ecological Restoration, ecological restoration is defined as the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed (SER, 2019).

Globally, environmental degradation has become a major concern due to increasing human population, industrial development, deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable land use practices. In response to these challenges, many countries have adopted environmental restoration strategies aimed at restoring damaged ecosystems and improving ecological balance. The United Nations Environment Programme emphasizes that restoring ecosystems is essential for addressing environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation (UNEP, 2021).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.


1.2 Background of Study

Environmental degradation has become one of the most pressing global challenges affecting ecosystems, biodiversity, and human survival. Over the years, human activities such as deforestation, urbanization, industrialization, mining, oil exploration, and unsustainable agricultural practices have contributed significantly to environmental deterioration. Environmental restoration therefore emerges as a critical approach to reversing ecological damage and restoring the natural balance of ecosystems. According to the Society for Ecological Restoration, ecological restoration involves assisting the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded, damaged, or destroyed, with the aim of reestablishing their ecological structure, functions, and biodiversity (SER, 2019).

The role of biodiversity in environmental restoration has attracted considerable attention among environmental scientists and conservationists. Biodiversity includes plants, animals, microorganisms, and the ecological processes that connect them. Animals in particular play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem stability and facilitating the recovery of degraded environments. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, biodiversity is essential for ecosystem resilience because it supports ecological functions that allow ecosystems to adapt and recover from disturbances (UNEP, 2021). Animals contribute to these ecological functions through activities such as pollination, seed dispersal, soil formation, nutrient cycling, and regulation of other species populations.

The study of animals and their interactions with the environment falls under the field of Animal Biology, which is an important branch of Biology. Animal biology provides knowledge about the structure, physiology, behavior, and ecological roles of animals in different environments. Understanding these biological characteristics is important for conservation planning and environmental restoration. Suding (2011) asserted that successful ecosystem restoration depends not only on vegetation recovery but also on the restoration of animal communities that support essential ecological processes.

Klein et al. (2007) stated that pollinating animals are responsible for the reproduction of a large proportion of flowering plants and crops worldwide. Without pollinators, many plant species would struggle to reproduce and maintain stable populations. In the Nigerian context, environmental degradation has become increasingly severe due to a combination of natural and human-induced factors. Rapid population growth, deforestation, overgrazing, poor waste management, oil spills, and industrial pollution have significantly affected ecosystems across the country. Large areas of forests have been cleared for agricultural expansion, while urban development has led to the destruction of natural habitats. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Nigeria has experienced substantial deforestation over the past decades, resulting in the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services that support environmental sustainability (FAO, 2020).

The loss of wildlife species in Nigeria further complicates environmental restoration efforts. Many animal populations are declining due to habitat destruction, illegal hunting, and environmental pollution. These declines disrupt ecological interactions that are necessary for maintaining ecosystem balance. Dirzo et al. (2014) affirmed that the decline of animal populations across many ecosystems reduces the effectiveness of natural ecological processes that support environmental regeneration. When key species disappear from an ecosystem, processes such as seed dispersal, pest regulation, and nutrient cycling become less efficient. This study is set against the backdrop of increasing environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and the growing recognition of the important role that animal biology plays in supporting environmental restoration efforts in Nigeria.


1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that environmental degradation is increasingly becoming a serious challenge in Nigeria, affecting ecosystems, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of many communities. Rapid urbanization, deforestation, industrial activities, oil exploration, and unsustainable agricultural practices have led to severe environmental problems such as habitat destruction, soil erosion, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. In many parts of the country, wildlife populations are declining and natural habitats are being fragmented, making it difficult for ecosystems to regenerate naturally. According to United Nations Environment Programme, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss significantly reduce the resilience of ecosystems and their ability to recover from disturbances (UNEP, 2021).

Furthermore, many conservation and environmental management programs lack adequate scientific data on the behavior, distribution, and ecological roles of animal species that support ecosystem recovery. Additionally, human activities such as illegal hunting, habitat encroachment, and pollution continue to reduce animal populations that are essential for ecosystem functioning. When key species disappear from an ecosystem, important ecological processes such as seed dispersal, pollination, and natural pest regulation are disrupted, slowing down environmental recovery. According to World Wildlife Fund, biodiversity loss significantly weakens ecosystem resilience and reduces the capacity of degraded environments to recover naturally (WWF, 2022). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the contribution of animal biology to environmental restoration efforts in Nigeria.


1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to examine the contribution of animal biology to environmental restoration efforts in Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To assess the impact of declining animal populations on environmental restoration efforts in Nigeria.
  2. To identify the biological processes through which animals contribute to ecosystem recovery.
  3. To examine the ecological roles of animals in environmental restoration.
  4. To evaluate the importance of integrating animal biology into environmental management and restoration strategies.

1.5 Research Questions

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

  • What ecological roles do animals play in environmental restoration?
  • What biological processes enable animals to contribute to ecosystem recovery?
  • How does the decline of animal populations affect environmental restoration efforts in Nigeria?
  • Why is it important to integrate animal biology into environmental restoration strategies?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

  • H0: Animal biology has no significant contribution to environmental restoration efforts in Nigeria.
  • H1: Animal biology has a significant contribution to environmental restoration efforts in Nigeria.

1.7 Significance of Study

It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide factual information on how effective communication strategies used in public relations help create awareness about the dangers of cultism in tertiary institutions. The study will also document how public relations campaigns, media messages, and institutional communication programs have been used by universities and security agencies to discourage cult activities.

Furthermore, the findings will provide documented evidence on the role of public enlightenment programs in reducing student involvement in cult-related activities within Nigerian tertiary institutions. In addition, the study will increase awareness among local communities about the ecological importance of animals in maintaining environmental balance and supporting ecosystem recovery.

Lastly, the research will serve as an academic resource for students and researchers in biology, zoology, ecology, and environmental science by providing documented information on animal–environment interactions.


1.8 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the contribution of animal biology to environmental restoration efforts in Nigeria. The research is limited to restoration initiatives and biodiversity conservation activities within Cross River State, particularly within conservation areas managed by the Cross River National Park.

The study is limited to available ecological data and conservation activities within the selected area and does not cover all restoration programs across Nigeria.


1.10 Definition of Terms

Animal Biology:

Animal biology refers to the scientific study of animals, including their structure, physiology, behavior, reproduction, and interactions with their environment. It provides knowledge about how animals function within ecosystems and how their biological activities influence ecological processes such as pollination, seed dispersal, and nutrient cycling. According to Campbell et al. (2018), animal biology helps scientists understand how animals contribute to ecosystem stability and biodiversity conservation.

Environmental Restoration:

Environmental restoration refers to the process of assisting the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded, damaged, or destroyed due to human activities or natural disturbances. Restoration activities often involve reestablishing ecological balance, improving biodiversity, and restoring ecosystem functions such as soil fertility and water quality (Suding, 2011).

Ecosystem:

An ecosystem is a biological community consisting of living organisms such as plants, animals, and microorganisms interacting with each other and with their physical environment, including soil, water, and climate. Ecosystems function through complex ecological relationships that maintain environmental balance and sustainability (Odum & Barrett, 2005).

Biodiversity:

Biodiversity refers to the variety of living organisms present in a particular environment, including plants, animals, microorganisms, and their genetic diversity. High biodiversity contributes to ecosystem stability, resilience, and productivity. The loss of biodiversity often leads to ecosystem degradation and reduced environmental sustainability (Dirzo et al., 2014).
