ABSTRACT

The study critically analyzes the causes of poor environmental factors that contribute to the prevalence of diseases in Sauka Kahuta, Mandela Community, Minna Niger State. Investigation revealed that environmental health challenges in Sauka Kahuta remain unresolved due to structural and systemic barriers. Limited access to proper sanitation infrastructure, poor drainage systems, and a lack of public awareness about the importance of environmental hygiene are some of the underlying issues that perpetuate these conditions. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. Data was collected using the questionnaire and analyzed using the frequency distribution table to seek answers to the five (5) research questions. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test.

The findings reveal a significant correlation between inadequate waste management, poor sanitation, and the prevalence of waterborne diseases. The majority of respondents highlighted poor waste disposal practices, with garbage often left uncollected and improperly discarded in open spaces. Additionally, insufficient access to clean water sources, coupled with lack of proper sewage systems, exacerbates the health risks in the community. The research also identifies limited public awareness on hygiene and sanitation as a critical factor in the persistence of these issues. Furthermore, inadequate government intervention and failure to enforce environmental health policies have been observed as major contributors to the community's environmental and public health challenges.

The findings suggest that an integrated approach, combining effective waste management, community education on sanitation, and stronger governmental involvement, is crucial to improving the health outcomes in the region. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the community should prioritize the implementation of effective waste management systems, including regular waste collection, proper disposal facilities, and recycling programs. Also, sanitation facilities should be improved to ensure clean drinking water and hygienic conditions in the community.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of Study

Environmental factors play a crucial role in shaping the health outcomes of individuals and communities. In developing nations, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, poor environmental conditions have been consistently linked to high disease burdens. Factors such as inadequate waste disposal systems, lack of clean water, poor housing conditions, and air pollution contribute significantly to the spread of communicable and non-communicable diseases (World Health Organization, 2021). Sauka Kahuta, located within the Mandela Community in Minna, Niger State, serves as a case study for understanding the critical interplay between environmental degradation and community health. This area is characterized by rapid population growth, insufficient urban planning, and limited access to basic amenities such as potable water and effective waste management systems. According to Adebayo and Ojo (2020), the absence of adequate infrastructure in semi-urban communities often leads to increased exposure to health hazards, including waterborne diseases like cholera, respiratory ailments from air pollution, and vector-borne diseases such as malaria.

The historical context of environmental management in Sauka Kahuta reveals a persistent gap in policy implementation and community engagement. Despite numerous governmental and non-governmental initiatives aimed at improving environmental health, the lack of sustainable practices and community awareness continues to hinder progress. As noted by Eze et al. (2018), addressing environmental health issues requires an integrated approach that combines policy, education, and infrastructural development (Eze et al. 2018). The relationship between environmental factors and public health is a subject of growing concern worldwide. Environmental conditions significantly influence the health and well-being of individuals, and poor environmental quality is often linked to the prevalence of diseases in communities. In many developing regions, including Nigeria, environmental factors such as inadequate sanitation, improper waste management, air and water pollution, and overcrowded living conditions contribute to a range of health issues, including respiratory infections, gastrointestinal diseases, and vector-borne illnesses (World Health Organization, 2021).

Sauka Kahuta in the Mandela Community of Minna, Niger State, exemplifies a community grappling with poor environmental conditions. Despite efforts by local authorities and non-governmental organizations to address these challenges, the persistence of inadequate infrastructure, limited public health education, and socioeconomic constraints exacerbates environmental degradation. Studies have shown that communities with poor environmental management often experience higher rates of preventable diseases, which undermine productivity, increase healthcare costs, and reduce quality of life (UNICEF, 2020).

This study critically analyzes the causes of poor environmental factors leading to diseases in Sauka Kahuta. The investigation seeks to identify specific environmental challenges faced by the community, evaluate their underlying causes, and assess the health implications for residents.

1.2 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that the persistence of poor environmental conditions in Sauka Kahuta, Mandela Community, Minna Niger State, is a significant contributor to the high prevalence of diseases in the area. Inadequate waste management, insufficient access to clean water, overcrowded living conditions, and unregulated urbanization are some of the environmental challenges affecting the community (World Health Organization, 2021). Despite various governmental and non-governmental efforts, the environmental health challenges in Sauka Kahuta remain unresolved due to structural and systemic barriers. Limited access to proper sanitation infrastructure, poor drainage systems, and a lack of public awareness about the importance of environmental hygiene are some of the underlying issues that perpetuate these conditions.

According to Adebayo and Ojo (2020), the absence of sustainable waste disposal systems in semi-urban communities often results in indiscriminate dumping of refuse, creating breeding grounds for disease vectors.

Additionally, socio-economic factors such as poverty and unemployment exacerbate the situation by restricting residents' ability to adopt healthier practices. Financial constraints limit access to clean water sources and proper housing, forcing many families to live in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. As noted by Olukoye et al. (2019), the intersection of poverty and poor environmental management is a key driver of health disparities in Nigerian communities. It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to address these problems by analyzing the causes of poor environmental factors that leads to diseases in the community.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of the study is to critically analyze the causes of poor environmental factors that contribute to the prevalence of diseases in Sauka Kahuta, Mandela Community, Minna Niger State. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To identify the primary environmental factors contributing to diseases in Sauka Kahuta.
  2. To assess the relationship between poor sanitation, waste management practices, and health outcomes in the community.
  3. To evaluate the role of socio-economic conditions in exacerbating environmental health issues in Sauka Kahuta.
  4. To examine the effectiveness of existing policies and interventions aimed at addressing environmental challenges in the community.
  5. To propose actionable recommendations for improving environmental health and reducing disease prevalence in Sauka Kahuta.

1.4 Research Questions

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

  • What are the primary environmental factors contributing to the prevalence of diseases in Sauka Kahuta, Mandela Community?
  • How do poor sanitation and waste management practices impact the health outcomes of residents in Sauka Kahuta?
  • In what ways do socio-economic conditions exacerbate environmental health issues in the community?
  • How effective are the existing policies and interventions in addressing environmental challenges in Sauka Kahuta?
  • What actionable measures can be recommended to improve environmental health and reduce disease prevalence in Sauka Kahuta?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

  • H0: Poor sanitation and inadequate waste management does not significantly contribute to the prevalence of diseases in Sauka Kahuta.
  • H1: Poor sanitation and inadequate waste management significantly contributes to the prevalence of diseases in Sauka Kahuta.

1.6 Significance of Study

The outcome of this research will benefit policymakers by providing evidence-based insights into the environmental factors contributing to diseases in Sauka Kahuta, enabling the formulation and implementation of more effective health and environmental policies. Also, for non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations, the research study will serve as a foundation for designing and implementing programs aimed at addressing poor environmental practices and promoting sustainable development.

Additionally, residents of Sauka Kahuta will gain increased awareness of the connection between their environment and health, encouraging them to adopt better hygiene practices and collaborate with authorities to improve their living conditions.

Furthermore, public health officials will find the research valuable as it will highlight specific environmental health challenges and guide the development of targeted health interventions to improve the well-being of the community.

Finally, this study will provide academics and researchers with a comprehensive analysis of environmental health challenges in semi-urban Nigerian communities, offering a basis for future research and innovation in environmental health solutions.
