ABSTRACT


Computerized data security systems are technological frameworks designed to protect organizational information from unauthorized access, cyber threats, and data corruption through automated processes. The motivation for this study stems from the increasing frequency of data breaches and the inadequacy of traditional manual security methods in organizations, particularly in Nigeria. The aim of this study is to design and implement a reliable, context-appropriate computerized data security system that enhances protection, operational efficiency, and compliance with organizational policies. This research adopted a survey and system design methodology. Primary data was collected using questionnaires administered to staff and system users, while secondary data was sourced from relevant literature on encryption, authentication, access control, and monitoring techniques.

The proposed system was then designed using structured system analysis and modeling approaches, incorporating user authentication, real-time monitoring, and secure data encryption. The proposed system is significant because it provides a comprehensive security framework that reduces the risk of unauthorized access, minimizes data loss, and improves operational efficiency. It is expected to enhance organizational trust, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide a scalable solution adaptable to different operational contexts). The outcome of the proposed system is expected to be a fully functional computerized data security system that ensures secure storage, transmission, and access to organizational data. The system is designed to prevent breaches, detect anomalies in real-time, and provide an audit trail for monitoring user activity, thereby improving overall information security and operational efficiency.



1.1 Introduction

Data security is defined as the practice of protecting digital information from unauthorized access, corruption, or theft throughout its lifecycle (Stallings, 2017). In modern organizations, data is considered one of the most valuable assets, and its protection is crucial for operational efficiency, decision-making, and maintaining stakeholder trust. A computerized data security system is a technological solution that is designed to manage, monitor, and safeguard sensitive information using automated processes, encryption, access control, and auditing mechanisms (Whitman & Mattord, 2021). With the rapid growth of digital technologies, organizations are increasingly relying on computer systems to store, process, and transmit critical information, making them more susceptible to cyber threats such as hacking, malware attacks, and unauthorized access (Sharma & Sahay, 2020).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, limitation of the study and definition of technical terms.


1.2 Background of Study

The evolution of data security systems can be traced back to the early days of computing when information was stored primarily in physical files and rudimentary computer systems. According to Stallings (2017), initial data protection measures relied heavily on physical security and basic password mechanisms, which provided limited defense against unauthorized access. As organizations increasingly adopted computer systems for managing sensitive data, the need for more sophisticated and automated security measures became evident. It is reported that the 1970s marked a significant milestone in data security with the introduction of cryptographic methods and access control models, which laid the foundation for modern information security systems (Whitman & Mattord, 2021). During this period, organizations began to understand the importance of protecting digital information from both internal and external threats, and policies for secure data management started to emerge.

Data security has emerged as a critical concern in contemporary information systems due to the exponential growth of digital data and cyber threats. According to Whitman and Mattord (2021), data security involves the protection of digital information from unauthorized access, alteration, and destruction to ensure confidentiality, integrity, and availability. It is reported that organizations that fail to implement adequate data security measures experience financial losses, reputational damage, and operational disruptions, which can undermine stakeholder confidence (Stallings, 2017). Several scholars have asserted that the increasing reliance on computer systems for storing and processing sensitive information has amplified the risks associated with data breaches and cyber-attacks (Sharma & Sahay, 2020). These risks include identity theft, malware infections, and unauthorized access to confidential records, which are becoming more sophisticated and difficult to detect using traditional security methods.

Whitman and Mattord (2021) stated that computerized data security systems provide automated mechanisms such as encryption, access control, and real-time monitoring that enhance protection against such vulnerabilities. It has been affirmed that the implementation of robust data security systems is not only a technological necessity but also a strategic organizational requirement, as it safeguards critical information and ensures compliance with regulatory standards (Stallings, 2017). Scholars contend that the absence of a well-structured computerized data security system exposes organizations to legal liabilities, loss of customer trust, and competitive disadvantages in the digital economy (Sharma & Sahay, 2020).

According to experts, modern security systems that integrate advanced authentication protocols, audit trails, and encryption algorithms provide a proactive approach to data protection, allowing organizations to detect and respond to threats effectively (Whitman & Mattord, 2021). Reported cases of data breaches in banks, healthcare institutions, and educational organizations affirm the urgent need for efficient, reliable, and user-friendly computerized data security solutions (Sharma & Sahay, 2020). This study is set against the backdrop of the pressing need for organizations to protect their digital assets through the design and implementation of a computerized data security system that ensures confidentiality, integrity, and accessibility of information while reducing exposure to cyber threats.


1.3 Statement of Problem

Based on the investigation conducted, the implemented system encounters a number of challenges, with some of the most significant issues outlined below:

  1. In the existing system, users and administrators often are experiencing difficulties in detecting and responding to security incidents promptly.
  2. Many organizations are still using outdated password systems and manual record-keeping, which was prone to errors, data loss, and operational inefficiencies.
  3. The current study area is facing increasing threats to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of their data due to the rapid growth of cyber attacks, unauthorized access, and malicious software.
  4. There is lack of robust encryption in the traditional system, with most data being stored or transmitted in plain formats.
  5. The existing systems also lack real-time monitoring and audit trails, making it difficult to detect unusual behavior or security incidents promptly.
  6. Lastly, the old method of data backup and recovery processes are irregular or unreliable, leaving organizations vulnerable to operational disruptions caused by system crashes, accidental deletions, or power failures.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to design and implement a computerized data security system that ensures the secure storage, management, and monitoring of organizational data. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To create a framework for a computerized data security system that safeguards sensitive organizational information.
  2. To develop secure authentication and access control mechanisms to prevent unauthorized data access.
  3. To design a user-friendly interface for monitoring and managing data security processes.
  4. To implement encryption and backup solutions to protect data integrity and availability.
  5. To evaluate the effectiveness of the computerized data security system in preventing breaches and maintaining operational efficiency.

1.5 Significance of Study

It is believed that at the implementation of the proposed system will enhance data protection practices, ensuring that sensitive organizational information is secured against unauthorized access, loss, or corruption. For IT staff and administrators, the system will simplify security management, making it easier to detect and respond to threats.

Furthermore, the system will provide real-time monitoring and control, reducing the risk of financial loss and reputational damage. In addition, the new system will ensure safe access to information, reducing the risk of unauthorized exposure.

Lastly, the new system will improve operational efficiency by automating monitoring, encryption, and access control processes. It will also serve as a reference for future researchers and students, contributing to academic knowledge in the field of data security.


1.6 Scope of Study

The scope of the research is focused on the design and implementation of a computerized data security system within Lagos State, Nigeria, specifically targeting mid-sized private organizations with moderate digital infrastructure.


1.7 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Establishment Policies: Establishment policies posed a serious limitation as most staffs are not ready to release information needed for this research work. There were lots of information needed from the staffs of this institution to enhance the study which took them time to release or they did not release at all for security purposes, hence the scope was reduced.
  3. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).

1.8 Definition of Terms

Computerized Data Security System:

A technological system that is designed to protect digital information from unauthorized access, corruption, or theft using tools such as encryption, authentication, access control, and auditing (Whitman & Mattord, 2021).

Encryption:

It is the process of converting information into a coded format that is readable only by authorized users to ensure data confidentiality (Stallings, 2017).

Authentication:

The method of verifying the identity of a user or system, which is essential for preventing unauthorized access (Sharma & Sahay, 2020).

Access Control:

A security technique that is used to regulate who can view or use resources within an organization (Whitman & Mattord, 2021).

Data Integrity:

The assurance that information is accurate, consistent, and has not been altered by unauthorized means (Stallings, 2017).

Backup:

The process of creating copies of data that is stored securely to prevent loss in case of system failure (Sharma & Sahay, 2020).
