    ABSTRACT

Online score sheet reposting system is one of relevant component in the examination system. The development of modern education technology has not only promoted the changes of examination pattern, but also the scoring pattern. The aim of the study is to design and implement an online score sheet reposting system. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to develop an application software that will allow easy retrieval and indexing of data about any student without wasting time, Process large volume of data in an hour which can done manually by five personnel for days and Eliminate the omissions and errors of grades calculation in score sheet since computer is going to handle the calculation. The motivation that led to the implementation of the proposed system is as a result of the delays in the release of results from score sheet, errors inherent in handling and assessment of score sheet from scripts and delays in marking answer scripts and reposting of score sheet. The methodology adopted in this study is the structured system analysis and design methodology (SSADM) which is a technical approach for analyzing and designing an application or system by applying object throughout the software development process. The programming language used is HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, PHP, SQL and JQUERY. The reason why web programming languages was used is because, it is platform independent and it is a web based application. The new system will coordinate the basic requirement for admission, scoring and screening of each candidate, the specification of department, computing candidate information, and eventually given a report on admission status of each candidate. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study. The expected result is an Online Score Sheet Reposting System that will present students score sheet record in electronic form and eliminate the omissions and errors of grades calculation in score sheet since computer is going to handle the calculation.

Design and Implementation of an Online Score Sheet Reposting System

    1.1 Introduction

Score Sheet Reposting System is vital recurrent procedures and processes in every university system that is inevitable. It is the university’s tradition to carry out these processes every first semester of every session, where each student is to know he/her performance in each of the course offered. These important processes provide the vital performance of student’s in each level in the university system. Online score sheet reposting system is one of important components in the examination system. The development of modern education technology has not only promoted the changes of examination pattern, but also the scoring pattern. The purpose of computer programming is to put these data files and documents in an interactive manner in a computer system. This will enhance valuable handling and processing of data, leading to improved management decision making. The system enforces security with the use of secret information (password), and also provides access to new and old grades.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Limitations of the Study and Definition of technical terms.

    1.2 Background of Study

Online score sheet reposting system is one of important components in the examination system. The development of modern education technology has not only promoted the changes of examination pattern, but also the scoring pattern. For the proper development of a society, its educational institutions play a very important role. They provide the society something which may be termed as its backbone, i.e., the educational youth.

The proper functioning of these institutions thus directly contributes to the advancement and development of the society. When looked from a system's point of view, the educational institutions comprise students, faculty, and backup facilities. If the institutions have to work efficiently and for the maximum benefit of the society, all these aspects have to be regularly evaluated. Realizing the importance which computers have achieved in every field including the educational field, the project then presents a computerized system of screening and scoring. It discusses the salient features of this system and the advantages that the system has over the manual working. The system can adapt to scoring the online papers which is provided by the online examination system. And the traditional papers can use the system to score online, too. Moreover, the system can treat no matter the standard sheet or the non-standard sheet.

    1.3 Statement of Problem

This research work is focused on the use of computer in scoring and screening of newly admitted student of Federal University of Technology (FUTO). It will coordinate the basic requirement for admission, scoring and screening of each candidate, the specification of department, computing candidate information, and eventually given a report on admission status of each candidate.

The major problems regarding the delivery of score sheet information in Nigerian universities include:

    1. Delays in the release of results from score sheet;
    2. Errors inherent in handling and assessment of score sheet from scripts;
    3. Delays in marking answer scripts and reposting of score sheet; and
    4. Cumbersome response systems − where they exist − for handling result-related complaints.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of the study

The aim of the study is to design and implement an Online score sheet reposting system. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to develop an application software that will:

    1. Allow easy retrieval and indexing of data about any student without wasting time.
    2. Process large volume of data in an hour which can done manually by five personnel for days.
    3. Minimize the number of personnel required in admission department since computer will take their duties.
    4. Present students score sheet record in electronic form.
    5. Eliminate the omissions and errors of grades calculation in score sheet since computer is going to handle the calculation.

    1.5 Significance of Study

Computer has widely proved to be very accurate and able to perform complex calculation with less or not error at all. The following benefits are provided by computerized scoring and screening system:

    1. Easy retrieved and fast information can be achieved
    2. It can conveniently store very large data
    3. Number of personnel required is minimal
    4. It provides better security against the access of unauthorized users.

This research work has carefully combined the important features of database services required to successfully replace the existing manual course registration process with an automated or computerized system.

    1.6 Scope of the Study

The scope of the research is focused on the Design and Implementation of an Online Score Sheet Reposting System using Mathematics and Computer Science Department Students from 100 level to 400 level of Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) as a case study.

    1.7 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

    1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
    2. Establishment Policies: Establishment policies posed a serious limitation as most staffs are not ready to release information needed for this project work. There were lots of information needed from the staffs of this institution to enhance the study which took them time to release or they did not release at all for security purposes, hence the scope was reduced.
    3. Research material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
    4. Frequent power failure: This made the researcher append more money on fuel to ensure sustainable power.
    5. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials.

    1.8 Definition of Terms

Result Computing: This is the process of computing each student’s result in a course by each course lecturer to determine every student’s performance in their course. A student’s result consists the individual courses results of the courses registered by the student.

Computer: Computer is an electronic device that accepts, processes, stores and outputs data at high speeds according to programmed instructions.
