1.1 Introduction
Digital content refers to any form of educational material that is delivered through electronic media, including text, audio, video, animations, and interactive simulations, which facilitate learning and knowledge acquisition (Al-Azawei, Serenelli & Lundqvist, 2016). In the context of computer education, designing digital content for special needs students involves creating instructional materials that are accessible, adaptable, and engaging for learners with varying physical, sensory, cognitive, and learning disabilities (Okoye & Eze, 2018). In Nigeria, special education schools are established to cater to students with disabilities, providing tailored educational programs that accommodate their unique learning needs (Ibekwe, 2019).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Digital content has become an integral part of modern education, offering innovative ways to enhance learning experiences for students across various disciplines. According to Al-Azawei, Serenelli, and Lundqvist (2016), digital content provides flexible and interactive learning opportunities that accommodate different learning styles and needs. In the context of special needs education, digital content plays a pivotal role in facilitating access to knowledge for students with physical, cognitive, sensory, or learning disabilities, thereby promoting inclusivity in educational settings.
Researchers have reported that despite the growing adoption of information and communication technology (ICT) in schools, students with disabilities in Nigeria face significant barriers in accessing and benefiting from digital learning materials (Okoye & Eze, 2018). It has been asserted that most digital educational resources available in Nigerian schools are not designed with accessibility in mind, often lacking features such as screen readers, sign language support, or adaptive interfaces that are essential for learners with special needs (Ibekwe, 2019).
Obi and Okafor (2020) stated that teachers in Nigerian special education schools often experience difficulties in implementing digital content effectively due to limited training and inadequate exposure to inclusive instructional design principles. Ejiogu and Nwosu (2021) affirmed that this situation results in students with disabilities encountering challenges that hinder their engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes. On the other hand, students who have access to well-designed and adaptive digital content demonstrate improved academic performance, enhanced technological skills, and increased participation in classroom activities, which underscores the importance of inclusive content design (Al-Azawei, Serenelli & Lundqvist, 2016).
Scholars contend that addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that considers the unique learning needs of special needs students, provides teachers with relevant training, and incorporates accessibility features into digital content (Okoye & Eze, 2018). Such an approach ensures that digital learning resources are not only available but are meaningful, effective, and equitable, thereby bridging the gap between special needs students and their peers in mainstream educational environments (Obi & Okafor, 2020). This study is set against the backdrop of the pressing need to explore how digital content is designed for special needs students in Nigerian computer education schools.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the integration of digital content in education is increasingly essential in the 21st century, providing opportunities for students to access learning resources effectively (Al-Azawei, Serenelli & Lundqvist, 2016). However, for special needs students in Nigerian computer education, the availability and design of appropriate digital content are limited (Okoye & Eze, 2018).
Additionally, teachers and educators often face difficulties in adapting existing digital tools to meet the specific needs of their students due to inadequate training and limited awareness of inclusive instructional design (Obi & Okafor, 2020).
Furthermore, students with special needs who are exposed to poorly designed digital content may experience frustration, and limited skill development, widening the digital divide in education (Ejiogu & Nwosu, 2021). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate how digital content is designed to meet the unique educational needs of special needs students in Nigerian computer education schools, identifying challenges and proposing solutions for more inclusive learning environments.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to design and evaluate digital content that meets the learning needs of special needs students in Nigerian computer education. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To identify challenges faced by students and teachers in using digital content for computer education.
- To examine the current state of digital content used in Nigerian special education schools.
- To design digital content that is accessible and inclusive for students with special needs.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of the designed digital content in improving learning outcomes.
- To provide recommendations for the development and implementation of digital content in Nigerian special education schools.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the following research questions guide the study:
- What is the current state of digital content used in Nigerian special education schools?
- What challenges do students and teachers face in using digital content for computer education?
- How can digital content be designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities effectively?
- What is the effectiveness of the designed digital content in improving students' learning outcomes?
- What strategies can be recommended to enhance the development and implementation of digital content in Nigerian special education schools?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H01: There is no significant difference in the learning outcomes of special needs students before and after the implementation of the designed digital content.
- H02: The designed digital content will significantly improve the engagement of students in Nigerian special education schools.
- H03: The designed digital content will significantly enhance the academic performance of students with special needs in computer education.
- H04: Teachers' utilization of digital content will improve after the introduction of appropriately designed resources.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will enhance students' access to digital learning materials that meet their specific needs, increasing engagement and academic performance. The study will also provide teachers with resources and training strategies to effectively implement digital content in special education classrooms.
Furthermore, the findings will guide administrators in planning and investing in ICT infrastructure to support inclusive education. In addition, the research will inform policy development on digital inclusion, accessibility standards, and curriculum integration for special needs education.
Lastly, the study will contribute to existing literature, providing a foundation for further research in inclusive digital content design and special needs education.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on designing digital content for special needs students in computer education, using selected special education schools in Lagos State, Nigeria as a case study.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Digital Content: According to Al-Azawei, Serenelli, and Lundqvist (2016), digital content refers to instructional materials delivered through electronic media, including text, video, audio, and interactive simulations, designed to enhance learning experiences.
Special Needs Students: Okoye and Eze (2018) stated that these are learners who require additional support due to physical, sensory, cognitive, or learning disabilities.
Computer Education: Ejiogu and Nwosu (2021) affirmed that computer education involves teaching students how to use computers and related technologies to develop digital literacy and problem-solving skills.
Inclusive Education: Obi and Okafor (2020) contended that inclusive education is the practice of providing equal learning opportunities for all students, including those with disabilities, through accessible and adaptable teaching methods.
Accessibility: According to Ibekwe (2019), accessibility is the degree to which digital content allows students with disabilities to perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the learning materials effectively.
