1.1 Introduction
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) refers to a broad range of technological tools and resources such as computers, tablets, the internet, multimedia applications, and communication devices that are used to create, store, process, and transmit information in various forms (UNESCO, 2011). In the context of education, ICT is playing a transformative role in enhancing teaching and learning processes by providing innovative methods of content delivery, improving access to information, and fostering interactive learning environments (Siraj-Blatchford & Siraj-Blatchford, 2006).
The integration of ICT into early childhood education is gaining global attention as educators and policymakers recognize its potential to support child-centered learning, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Through the use of digital tools such as educational games, videos, and interactive software, children are exposed to engaging learning experiences that is capable of enhancing their curiosity and participation in classroom activities (Bolstad, 2004).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Historically, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education is closely tied to the broader evolution of educational technology, which has progressed from the use of simple instructional aids to the integration of sophisticated digital systems that support teaching and learning. The early stages of ICT in education can be traced to the introduction of radio and television as instructional tools in the mid-20th century, which were used to broadcast educational content to learners in different locations. According to UNESCO (2002) reported that these early technologies laid the foundation for modern ICT by demonstrating how technology is expanding access to education and enhancing instructional delivery.
The growing relevance of ICT in early childhood education is linked to its ability to support interactive and engaging learning environments that align with children's natural curiosity and exploratory behaviors. Yelland according to Yelland (2005) asserted that the use of ICT in early learning environments is enhancing children's cognitive development by providing opportunities for problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking through digital play. Similarly, Siraj-Blatchford according to Siraj-Blatchford and Siraj-Blatchford (2006) stated that ICT is playing a crucial role in supporting early literacy and numeracy development when integrated appropriately into child-centered pedagogical practices. These perspectives suggest that ICT is not merely a supplementary tool but an essential component of modern early childhood education.
In developed countries, the integration of ICT into early childhood education has progressed significantly due to the availability of infrastructure, supportive policies, and well-trained educators. According to Bolstad (2004) affirmed that structured ICT policies and adequate teacher training programs are contributing to the effective use of technology in early childhood settings, leading to improved learning outcomes and increased engagement among young learners. In such contexts, ICT is seamlessly embedded into classroom activities, allowing children to interact with digital content in ways that complement traditional learning methods such as storytelling, play, and hands-on exploration. However, the situation in developing countries such as Nigeria presents a different picture, where the adoption of ICT in early childhood education is still evolving and faces numerous challenges.
Aduwa-Ogiegbaen and Iyamu (2005) contended that inadequate infrastructure, poor funding, and limited access to technological resources are major barriers to ICT integration in Nigerian schools. Within the Nigerian educational system, private schools are often perceived as being better equipped to adopt innovations such as ICT due to their relatively higher financial capacity and autonomy in decision-making. However, disparities still exist among private schools, particularly in semi-urban areas such as Karshi in the Federal Capital Territory. While some private schools in Karshi have embraced ICT by introducing digital learning tools and internet-enabled classrooms, others continue to rely heavily on traditional teaching methods due to financial constraints and limited access to technical support.
Plowman and Stephen (2005) reported that the effectiveness of ICT in early childhood education is largely dependent on how it is integrated into the learning process rather than the mere availability of technological tools. Furthermore, early childhood education emphasizes play-based and socially interactive learning, which raises important considerations regarding the appropriateness and impact of ICT on young learners. Cordes and Miller (2000) asserted that excessive or inappropriate use of technology may negatively affect children's social skills and physical development if not properly managed. On the other hand, proponents of ICT integration argue that when used in moderation and with appropriate guidance, digital tools are enriching learning experiences and supporting the development of essential 21st-century skills.
This study is set against the backdrop of the need to examine the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on early childhood education in private schools in Karshi, FCT Abuja by assessing its availability, usage, challenges, and impact on teaching and learning processes.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the rapid integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education is reshaping teaching and learning processes globally, but in early childhood education within private schools in Karshi, FCT Abuja, the degree to which ICT is enhancing learning experiences and outcomes is not clearly understood. While ICT is widely promoted as a tool that is capable of improving engagement, motivation, and cognitive development among young learners, evidence is emerging that its adoption in early childhood settings is uneven and often hindered by inadequate infrastructure, limited teacher training, and the absence of context specific pedagogical models for young children (Yelland 2005; Plowman and Stephen 2005).
Additionally, ICT is assumed to support the acquisition of foundational literacy and numeracy skills through interactive multimedia and learner centered activities, yet many teachers report a lack of confidence in using these tools meaningfully, leading to their use being restricted to basic tasks rather than integrated into holistic learning experiences (Hertzog 2007).
Furthermore, the influence of ICT on social development, play based learning, and teacher child interaction is under researched in the local context, raising questions about whether technology is supporting or undermining key aspects of early childhood pedagogy. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine how ICT is integrated into early childhood education in private schools in Karshi, the challenges associated with its use, and its overall impact on teaching and learning processes.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on early childhood education in private schools in Karshi, FCT Abuja. The specific objectives of the study are to:
- Determine the availability of ICT facilities in private early childhood schools in Karshi.
- Examine the extent to which ICT is used in teaching and learning processes.
- Assess the impact of ICT on pupils' learning activities and classroom participation.
- Identify the challenges affecting the use of ICT in early childhood education.
- Evaluate teachers' competence in the use of ICT for instructional delivery.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- What ICT facilities are available in private early childhood schools in Karshi?
- To what extent is ICT used in teaching and learning processes in these schools?
- What impact does ICT have on pupils' learning activities and classroom participation?
- What challenges are affecting the use of ICT in early childhood education?
- How competent are teachers in the use of ICT for instructional delivery?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: ICT facilities have no significant effect on teaching and learning in private early childhood schools in Karshi.
- H1: ICT facilities have a significant effect on teaching and learning in private early childhood schools in Karshi.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: The level of ICT usage has no significant impact on pupils' learning activities.
- H1: The level of ICT usage has a significant impact on pupils' learning activities.
Hypothesis Three
- H0: ICT does not significantly influence pupils' classroom participation.
- H1: ICT significantly influences pupils' classroom participation.
Hypothesis Four
- H0: Challenges associated with ICT use have no significant effect on its implementation in early childhood education.
- H1: Challenges associated with ICT use have a significant effect on its implementation in early childhood education.
Hypothesis Five
- H0: Teachers' competence in ICT has no significant effect on instructional delivery.
- H1: Teachers' competence in ICT has a significant effect on instructional delivery.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study the research will provide factual evidence on the current level of ICT availability and usage in private early childhood schools in Karshi, FCT Abuja. The outcome of this research will also show the extent to which ICT facilities such as computers, tablets, and internet services are present and utilized during teaching and learning activities.
Furthermore, the outcome of this research will reveal measurable challenges affecting ICT implementation, including limited infrastructure, irregular power supply, and inadequate teacher training. In addition, this research will present verifiable data on how ICT usage is relating to pupils' classroom participation and learning activities.
Lastly, the outcome of this research will supply documented information that will support school administrators and education stakeholders in making decisions based on actual conditions within the study area.
1.8 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to selected private early childhood schools located in Karshi within the Federal Capital Territory. The research of the research is focused on the availability of ICT facilities, level of usage, teacher competence, and challenges affecting ICT integration in early childhood education.
The study was limited by restricted access to some schools, and variation in ICT availability across institutions was affecting uniform data collection.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Information and Communication Technology (ICT):
Information and Communication Technology is defined as digital tools such as computers, internet services, and multimedia devices used for processing and sharing information in educational settings (UNESCO, 2011).
Early Childhood Education (ECE):
Early Childhood Education refers to the structured teaching and learning process for children from birth to about eight years, focusing on cognitive, social, and emotional development (UNICEF, 2012).
ICT Integration:
ICT Integration is the process of incorporating digital tools into teaching and learning activities to improve instructional delivery (Hertzog, 2007).
Teaching and Learning:
Teaching and Learning refers to the interaction between educators and learners aimed at knowledge transfer and skill development.
Instructional Materials:
Instructional Materials are resources used by teachers to facilitate learning, including both traditional and digital tools.
