ABSTRACT


The research work is aimed at investigating the Effect of Cations on Gastric Acid Secretion in Rats. In achieving this aim, the following objectives of study were set out to determine therapeutic effect of Cations on Gastric Acid Secretion in Rats, measure the gastric acid output in rats, determine the ulcer score in rats, examine the effect of extract on gastric acid secretion in rats, investigate the effect of extract on acid-alcohol induced gastric ulceration in rats, and examine the effect of extract on intestinal transit in rats. Gastric acid, gastric juice or stomach acid, is a digestive fluid formed in the stomach and is composed of hydrochloric acid (HCl), potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium chloride (NaCl). The acid plays a key role in digestion of proteins, by activating digestive enzymes, and making ingested proteins unravel so that digestive enzymes break down the long chains of amino acids. The motivation of the study is that alot of rats has died as a result of wrong gastric acid secretion, lack of accurate information about the measurement of gastric acid output in rats, improper materials used in the determination of the ulcer score in rats, poor extraction process of gastric acid secretion in rats, and insufficient information relating to the effect of extract on acid-alcohol induced gastric ulceration in rats. This led to the execution of the research work. This study will be of immense benefit to other researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.




1.1 Introduction

Gastric acid, gastric juice or stomach acid, is a digestive fluid formed in the stomach and is composed of hydrochloric acid (HCl), potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium chloride (NaCl). The acid plays a key role in digestion of proteins, by activating digestive enzymes, and making ingested proteins unravel so that digestive enzymes break down the long chains of amino acids. Gastric acid is produced by cells in the lining of the stomach, which are coupled in feedback systems to increase acid production when needed. Other cells in the stomach produce bicarbonate, a base, to buffer the fluid, ensuring that it does not become too acidic. These cells also produce mucus, which forms a viscous physical barrier to prevent gastric acid from damaging the stomach. The pancreas further produces large amounts of bicarbonate and secretes bicarbonate through the pancreatic duct to the duodenum to completely neutralize any gastric acid that passes further down into the digestive tract.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study.
