    ABSTRACT

Communication style is the pattern utilized by Basic Science students in exchanging and sharing of information among colleagues. The study was carried out to investigate the Effect of Communication Styles in Junior Secondary Practical Basic Science Classroom. Investigation revealed that the deterioration in the academic achievement attitude and values of secondary school students in public secondary schools one wonders if the high failure rates and the poor quality of the students is not a reflection of the instructional quality in the schools which is essentially a function of teachers communication skill.

The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. A total of 120 (One hundred and twenty) respondents were selected for this study to represent the entire population of the study. For null hypotheses were formulated and tested using the one-way ANOVA and the t-test statistical tools at zero point zero five (0.05) level of significance. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test.

    \r\n

The present study hypothesized that there is a significant relationship between teachers’ communication skills and students’ academic performance. Other hypothetical result is outlined at the presentation and data analysis section. The results of the findings will enable the public teachers and students to understand the effect of Teachers’ communication skill on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Basic Science and Technology teachers should endeavor to employ appropriate communication style and avoid the rush to cover the syllabus for the purpose of examination only. Also, there should be improved communication service conditions for Basic Science and Technology teachers.

    1.1 Introduction

    \r\n

Communication style is the pattern utilized by Basic Science students in exchanging and sharing of information among colleagues. Effective communicators respect diverse viewpoints, talk or write clearly, and listen intently. Basic Science has become such an indispensable tool that no nation, developed, undeveloped or developing, wishing to progress in the socio-economic sphere will afford to relegate its learning in schools. The role of science in this modern era of technology cannot be over emphasized. According to Olorundare (2011), the role of science in the development of modern societies is evident especially in the face of modern technological innovations. In other words, development of any nation is dependent on the advancement and application of science and technology (Ogunlaye & Fasakin, 2011; Awodun, Oni & Aladejana 2014).
