ABSTRACT


Instructional materials are teaching aids that facilitate understanding of networking concepts in Computer Science, supporting both theoretical and practical learning. The study aims to investigate the effect of instructional materials on students' academic performance in networking within secondary schools. This research seeks to address challenges in resource availability and utilization that impact learning outcomes, and to provide evidence for improving instructional practices. Data were collected from 150 students and teachers using structured questionnaires, analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings show 36.7% report moderate utilization, 26.7% high utilization, 33.3% very high influence on understanding, and 36.7% observe a very strong relationship with performance. Furthermore, 30% identified insufficient resources as a challenge. The outcome of this research indicates that effective instructional materials improve understanding and academic performance in networking, with proper utilization essential for optimal learning outcomes. Based on the findings, it was recommended that schools should provide adequate and up-to-date instructional materials, including networking devices, simulation software, and visual aids, to support effective teaching and learning of networking in Computer Science.



1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of Study

Instructional materials are considered essential tools in the teaching and learning process as they facilitate the presentation of abstract concepts and promote better understanding among students. According to Afolayan (2017), instructional materials serve as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical application, making learning more concrete and meaningful. It is reported that the use of visual, audio, and technological aids in teaching improves students comprehension, motivation, and academic achievement (Afolayan, 2017).

Instructional materials are tools, resources, and learning aids used by teachers to facilitate effective teaching and enhance students understanding of subject content. These materials include textbooks, charts, computers, projectors, models, software applications, and other technological resources that support lesson delivery and improve learning outcomes (Afolayan, 2017). In the teaching and learning process, instructional materials serve as a bridge between abstract concepts and real life applications, especially in skill oriented subjects such as Computer Science.

Computer Science is a vital subject in secondary school education due to its role in developing digital literacy, logical thinking, and problem solving skills required in a modern society. Networking, as a core component of Computer Science, focuses on the interconnection of computers and devices for data sharing and communication. Topics such as network topology, data transmission, hardware components, and internet communication require both theoretical explanation and practical demonstration for effective understanding (Ogunleye & Babajide, 2019).

Computer Science as a discipline is dynamic and requires students to not only understand theoretical concepts but also develop practical and problem-solving skills. Networking, a critical component of Computer Science, involves understanding the interconnection of computer systems, data transmission, network topologies, and internet communication protocols. Ogunleye and Babajide (2019) asserted that teaching networking without adequate instructional materials often limits students understanding, reduces engagement, and negatively affects academic performance. It is also stated that the integration of instructional resources, including computer simulation software, multimedia presentations, and networking devices, makes lessons more interactive and learner-centered, enhancing students ability to internalize complex concepts (Adeyemi, 2018). Furthermore, Ololube (2020) affirmed that schools that provide adequate instructional materials record higher students performance in practical and theoretical examinations compared to schools that do not. This study is set against the backdrop of the critical role that instructional materials play in improving teaching quality and students academic performance, especially in the teaching and learning of networking in Computer Science.


1.2 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that many Computer Science teachers rely heavily on verbal explanations and textbook based instruction, even when the subject matter requires practical demonstration and visualization. Networking concepts such as data transmission, network topology, and hardware configuration are often taught theoretically, which makes learning difficult for students and affects their academic performance (Ogunleye & Babajide, 2019). The absence or poor utilization of instructional materials reduces students interest, participation, and retention of knowledge, leading to poor performance in Computer Science examinations.

On the other hand, schools that make use of relevant instructional materials during networking lessons tend to record improved students comprehension, motivation, and academic achievement. Studies have shown that instructional materials enhance effective teaching by making lessons more interactive and learner centered, thereby improving academic outcomes (Adeyemi, 2018).

Furthermore, the persistent poor academic performance of students in Computer Science, especially in networking topics, raises concern among educators, parents, and policymakers. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the effect of instructional material in teaching and learning of networking on students academic performance in Computer Science.


1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of instructional materials in teaching and learning networking on students academic performance in Computer Science. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To examine the availability and utilization of instructional materials in the teaching of networking in secondary schools.
  2. To assess the impact of instructional materials on students comprehension of networking concepts.
  3. To determine the relationship between the use of instructional materials and students academic performance in networking topics.
  4. To identify challenges affecting the effective use of instructional materials in teaching networking.

1.4 Research Questions

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

  • What is the availability and level of utilization of instructional materials in teaching networking in secondary schools?
  • How do instructional materials influence students understanding of networking concepts?
  • What is the relationship between the use of instructional materials and students academic performance in networking?
  • What are the challenges affecting the effective use of instructional materials in teaching networking?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

  • H01: There is no significant relationship between the use of instructional materials and students academic performance in networking in Computer Science.
  • H02: The use of instructional materials significantly improves students academic performance in networking in Computer Science.

1.6 Significance of Study

The outcome of this research will provide teachers with practical knowledge on the effective use of instructional materials to improve students comprehension and engagement in networking lessons. The study will also enable school administrators to make informed decisions on the provision and maintenance of instructional materials.

Furthermore, the study will guide school administrators and policymakers in allocating resources, providing adequate teaching aids, and developing strategies for enhancing the quality of Computer Science education.

Lastly, the study will serve as a reference for future researchers interested in instructional materials and teaching effectiveness in technology-oriented subjects.


1.7 Scope of Study

The scope of the research is focused on the effect of instructional materials in teaching and learning networking on students academic performance in Computer Science in selected secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria.


1.8 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
  3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Instructional Materials: Tools and resources used by teachers to facilitate learning and improve students comprehension, including charts, computers, projectors, and networking devices (Afolayan, 2017).

Networking: A branch of Computer Science that deals with the interconnection of computers and devices for communication and data sharing (Ogunleye & Babajide, 2019).

Academic Performance: The measurable outcomes of students learning, often evaluated through examinations, practical assessments, and classroom activities (Adeyemi, 2018).
