1.1 Introduction
Social media refers to digital communication platforms that allow individuals and organizations to create, share, and exchange information through online networks. According to Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), social media consists of internet-based applications that enable users to generate content and participate in information sharing. In the field of journalism, social media has become an important tool for gathering news, interacting with audiences, and distributing information beyond traditional media channels. The development of platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube has changed the way people access news, as many individuals now receive updates instantly through mobile devices.
Television news broadcasting is the process of collecting, producing, and presenting current information to the public through television channels. It remains one of the major sources of reliable information because of its ability to combine visual presentation, professional reporting, and wide audience coverage. However, the emergence of social media has influenced television broadcasting practices by introducing faster methods of news distribution and greater audience participation.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Social media has become one of the most influential communication technologies shaping the way information is created, distributed, and consumed in modern society. According to Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), social media refers to internet-based platforms that allow users to create, share, and exchange information through interactive online communities. The growth of platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and YouTube has transformed communication patterns by enabling individuals and organizations to share information instantly with a large audience. In the media industry, this technological development has changed traditional news practices by introducing faster methods of information gathering, audience engagement, and news dissemination.
Television news broadcasting has traditionally served as a major source of credible information by providing professionally gathered and verified reports to the public. According to McQuail (2010), mass media institutions play an important role in informing society, shaping public opinion, and providing a platform for social interaction. Television broadcasting combines audio and visual elements, making it effective in delivering news reports, documentaries, interviews, and public enlightenment programmes. However, the emergence of social media has created a new communication environment where audiences no longer depend solely on television stations for immediate access to current events.
Similarly, Hermida (2010) reported that social media has introduced a new form of journalism where information flows through a network of professional journalists, organizations, and ordinary citizens. This development has influenced the traditional relationship between broadcasters and audiences because viewers now participate actively in news production through comments, live updates, and content sharing. Television stations are increasingly using social media platforms to promote news programmes, receive audience feedback, monitor public discussions, and provide updates beyond scheduled broadcasting hours.
In the same vein, Jenkins, Ford, and Green (2013) asserted that digital media has encouraged participatory communication, where audiences are not only consumers of information but also contributors to media content. Social media has provided television broadcasters with opportunities to expand their reach, especially among younger audiences who spend more time on digital platforms than traditional media channels. Moreover, the relationship between social media and television broadcasting has created both opportunities and challenges for news organizations. According to Pavlik (2013), digital technologies have transformed journalism practices by improving speed, accessibility, and interaction while also creating concerns about accuracy, verification, and professional standards. The rapid spread of information through social media means that television stations must compete with online sources that provide instant updates. Furthermore, social media has influenced the operational strategies of television stations in Lagos State, which is one of Nigeria's major media centres. Stations such as Lagos Television and Channels Television have adopted social media platforms as part of their news distribution strategies. According to Asemah, Nwammuo, and Nkwam-Uwaoma (2017), the integration of new media technologies into journalism has improved communication between media organizations and their audiences while creating new approaches to news production. Through social media, television stations are able to share breaking news, promote programmes, interact with viewers, and attract audiences who may not regularly watch traditional television broadcasts.
This study is set against the backdrop of assessing the effect of social media on television news broadcasting in Lagos State, with particular focus on Lagos Television and Channels Television.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the rapid growth of social media platforms has changed the traditional approach to television news broadcasting in Lagos State, as many viewers now depend on platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and YouTube for immediate access to news updates. On the other hand, television stations such as Lagos Television and Channels Television are experiencing increased pressure to adapt their news operations because audiences expect faster reporting, online engagement, and instant updates beyond conventional television broadcasts.
Additionally, the increasing influence of social media has created challenges for television news organizations, including competition for audience attention, the spread of unverified information, and changes in viewers' news consumption habits.
Furthermore, the integration of social media into television news broadcasting has created opportunities for wider audience reach, improved interaction with viewers, and faster dissemination of information. However, there is still limited understanding of how social media affects the performance, credibility, and operational practices of television news broadcasting in Lagos State. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the effect of social media on television news broadcasting in Lagos State.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
