1.1 Introduction
Geography is a discipline concerned with the study of the Earth, its environment, and the interactions between humans and their surroundings. According to Akinola (2017), Geography involves understanding spatial patterns, natural phenomena, and human activities, and it equips students with skills to analyze environmental challenges critically. One such environmental challenge is pollution, which refers to the introduction of harmful substances or contaminants into the natural environment, resulting in adverse effects on ecosystems and human health (Olajide, 2019).
Pollution is a pressing issue that requires students to not only understand theoretical concepts but also develop practical awareness of its causes, impacts, and mitigation measures. Traditionally, Geography instruction in Nigerian secondary schools relies heavily on textbooks, lectures, and limited field experiences (Okeke, 2018). As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Geography is the scientific study of the Earth and the interaction between humans and their environment. The discipline provides students with critical skills for understanding natural phenomena, spatial patterns, and environmental challenges (Akinola, 2017). One of the most pressing environmental challenges today is pollution, which refers to the introduction of harmful substances into air, water, and soil, leading to detrimental effects on ecosystems and human health (Olajide, 2019). Pollution has become a significant concern in Nigeria, particularly in areas experiencing rapid urbanization and industrialization. According to Yusuf (2019), senior secondary school students often exhibit limited understanding of pollution, its sources, and its effects, highlighting a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical awareness.
According to Okeke (2018), traditional instructional strategies in Geography, such as lecture-based and textbook-centered teaching, are insufficient for fostering deep understanding among students. He reported that these conventional methods often lead to rote learning, lack of engagement, and poor retention of environmental concepts. Similarly, Adewumi (2020) affirmed that students' interest in Geography diminishes when instructional approaches fail to connect classroom content with real-world phenomena. On the other hand, low interest directly affects academic performance because students are less motivated to actively participate in learning activities, which reduces their ability to analyze and evaluate complex environmental issues such as pollution.
Adigun and Ibrahim (2020) asserted that, innovative instructional strategies, including Virtual Field Trip (VFT) instruction, offer effective solutions to these challenges. They stated that VFT uses digital simulations and interactive media to replicate real-world field experiences within the classroom, allowing students to observe and analyze environmental issues without physically visiting locations. According to Okafor (2021), students exposed to VFT instruction demonstrate improved comprehension of geographical concepts, enhanced problem-solving skills, and increased engagement compared to students taught using traditional methods.
Adewumi (2020) stated that, several factors hinder the adoption of VFT instruction in Nigerian secondary schools. He contended that inadequate technological infrastructure, limited teacher training, and curriculum constraints are major barriers. Similarly, Adigun and Ibrahim (2020) affirmed that schools often lack sufficient digital resources to support immersive learning experiences, resulting in uneven educational outcomes among students. On the other hand, research indicates that where virtual field trip instruction is implemented effectively, students exhibit heightened interest, better retention of knowledge, and improved academic performance in environmental topics (Okafor, 2021).
Yusuf (2019) asserted that, most senior secondary students struggle to identify the causes and effects of pollution in their communities, indicating a gap in environmental education. According to Okeke (2018), enhancing academic performance and fostering interest in Geography requires adopting teaching strategies that are student-centered and technologically enabled. He stated that VFT instruction is not merely a supplement to conventional teaching but a transformative approach that aligns with modern pedagogical trends and the needs of 21st-century learners.
Adigun and Ibrahim (2020) affirmed that, VFT allows students to explore complex environmental processes such as air, water, and soil pollution through simulations that promote observation, critical thinking, and analysis. This study is set against the backdrop of the growing need to improve academic performance and cultivate interest in Geography, particularly environmental topics such as pollution, among senior secondary school students.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the persistent decline in academic performance among senior secondary school students in Geography has remained a significant concern in educational research and practice. According to Okeke (2018), traditional instructional methods, predominantly lecture-based and textbook-oriented approaches, often fail to engage students effectively, leading to shallow understanding and poor retention of geographical concepts. On the other hand, students' interest in Geography is equally affected by monotonous instructional strategies, which reduces their motivation to actively participate in learning activities (Adewumi, 2020).
Furthermore, educators face challenges in adopting VFT instruction due to limited technological resources, inadequate training, and insufficient curriculum support, which hinder the potential benefits of such interventions (Adigun & Ibrahim, 2020). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the effect of Virtual Field Trip instruction on academic performance and interest in pollution among senior secondary Geography students in Lapai Local Government Area, Niger State.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of Virtual Field Trip instruction in enhancing both academic performance and interest in pollution-related topics among senior secondary school students.
To achieve this aim, the study has the following objectives:
- To determine the effect of Virtual Field Trip instruction on students' academic performance in Geography.
- To examine the influence of Virtual Field Trip instruction on students' interest in learning about pollution.
- To compare the academic performance of students taught using traditional methods and those exposed to Virtual Field Trip instruction.
- To assess the level of students' engagement during Virtual Field Trip sessions.
- To identify the challenges faced by educators in implementing Virtual Field Trip instruction in senior secondary schools.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the study will address the following research questions:
- What is the effect of Virtual Field Trip instruction on students' academic performance in Geography?
- How does Virtual Field Trip instruction influence students' interest in learning about pollution?
- Is there a significant difference in academic performance between students taught using traditional methods and those exposed to Virtual Field Trip instruction?
- What is the level of student engagement during Virtual Field Trip sessions?
- What challenges do educators face in implementing Virtual Field Trip instruction in senior secondary schools?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis 1
- H0: Virtual Field Trip instruction has no significant effect on students' academic performance in Geography.
- H1: Virtual Field Trip instruction has a significant effect on students' academic performance in Geography.
Hypothesis 2
- H0: Virtual Field Trip instruction has no significant effect on students' interest in learning about pollution.
- H1: Virtual Field Trip instruction has a significant effect on students' interest in learning about pollution.
Hypothesis 3
- H0: There is no significant difference in academic performance between students taught using traditional methods and those exposed to Virtual Field Trip instruction.
- H1: There is a significant difference in academic performance between students taught using traditional methods and those exposed to Virtual Field Trip instruction.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide evidence on the effectiveness of Virtual Field Trip instruction in enhancing students' academic performance in Geography. The results will also show how VFT instruction increases students' interest and engagement in pollution-related topics.
Furthermore, curriculum planners will use the findings to integrate technology-enhanced learning strategies into secondary school Geography programs. In addition, policymakers will have a basis for allocating resources toward improving technological infrastructure in schools.
Lastly, the outcome of this research will provide baseline data for future studies on the use of virtual learning technologies in Nigerian secondary schools, particularly in rural contexts like Lapai Local Government Area.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on the effect of virtual field trip instruction on academic performance and interest in pollution among senior secondary geography students, using Lapai Local Government Area, Niger State as a case study.
1.9 Limitations of the study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Virtual Field Trip (VFT): According to Adigun and Ibrahim (2020), VFT is a technology-based instructional strategy that simulates real-world field experiences through interactive digital media and virtual environments, allowing students to explore and learn from geographical phenomena without physical travel.
Academic Performance: According to Okeke (2018), academic performance is the measurable outcome of students' learning, usually evaluated through examinations, tests, and continuous assessment scores.
Interest: According to Adewumi (2020), interest refers to students' intrinsic motivation and willingness to engage in learning activities, particularly in understanding environmental topics such as pollution.
Pollution: According to Olajide (2019), pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the natural environment, resulting in detrimental effects on ecosystems, human health, and the quality of life.
Geography Education: According to Akinola (2017), Geography education involves the teaching and learning of spatial patterns, human-environment interactions, and environmental management in schools, aimed at fostering analytical and problem-solving skills in students.
