1.1 Introduction
E-examinations, also known as electronic examinations or Computer-Based Testing (CBT), is the administration of tests and assessments using digital devices such as computers, tablets, or smartphones instead of traditional paper-based methods (Ifinedo, 2019). In recent years, examination malpractice has become a pervasive problem in Nigerian educational institutions. Traditional paper-based examinations often experience issues such as question leakage, impersonation, collusion among students, and other unethical practices, which compromise the credibility of assessment outcomes (Okeke & Onwuka, 2018). The adoption of e-examinations in universities, including the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), is intended to address these challenges by introducing systems that monitor, randomize, and secure the examination process (Oyelade et al., 2014). E-examinations allow for features such as question randomization, automated grading, time tracking, and real-time monitoring of student activity.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Examinations play a central role in the educational system as they serve as the primary tool for evaluating students' knowledge, skills, and competencies. According to Okeke and Onwuka (2018), examinations are meant to provide a reliable measure of students' understanding of academic content and to serve as a benchmark for academic progression. However, the credibility of traditional paper-based examinations has been persistently challenged by various forms of malpractice, including impersonation, leakage of examination questions, collusion, and the use of unauthorized materials.
The prevalence of examination malpractice has led to significant concerns among educators, policymakers, and stakeholders in the educational sector. Oyelade, Adewumi, and Oladunjoye (2014) reported that malpractice not only diminishes the value of students' certificates but also erodes public trust in the educational system. The authors asserted that repeated exposure to unethical practices in examinations compromises the objective evaluation of learners and affects the overall quality of education. Consequently, there has been a growing demand for innovative approaches to ensure secure and credible assessment systems that can uphold academic integrity.
According to Ifinedo (2019), e-examinations refer to the use of computers and electronic platforms to deliver assessments, automate grading, and monitor student activity in real time. This technological intervention is designed to reduce human errors, minimize subjective bias in grading, and prevent opportunities for traditional forms of malpractice. Abubakar and Musa (2020) affirmed that e-examinations introduce features such as randomized question sets, restricted access to examination content, and automated scoring systems, all of which contribute to creating a more secure assessment environment.
In the context of Nigerian universities, including the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), the establishment of CBT centers represents a major step toward modernizing the examination process. According to Oladunjoye et al. (2014), UNILORIN's CBT Center provides students with access to computer-based assessments that are designed to reduce the incidence of malpractice while improving efficiency in examination administration. The center employs a combination of technological safeguards and administrative oversight to ensure that examinations are conducted fairly, transparently, and with minimal human interference.
Oyelade et al. (2014) contended that technical difficulties such as software malfunctions, inadequate computer literacy among some students, and inconsistent internet connectivity can affect the smooth execution of exams. These challenges may result in delayed or incomplete assessments, potentially affecting students' performance and overall satisfaction with the examination process. In addition, some educators and students have expressed concerns regarding the adaptability of learners to digital assessment formats, stating that test anxiety and unfamiliarity with computers can influence outcomes (Abubakar & Musa, 2020).
According to Ifinedo (2019), e-examinations provide a reliable platform for real-time monitoring, reduce the need for physical invigilation, and allow institutions to maintain detailed logs of student interactions during the exam. Moreover, Okeke and Onwuka (2018) asserted that the digitization of examinations aligns with global trends in education, where technology is increasingly leveraged to improve the efficiency, accessibility, and credibility of academic evaluation. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of e-examinations at UNILORIN's CBT Center in completely eliminating malpractice remains under-researched. While anecdotal reports suggest a reduction in traditional forms of cheating, limited empirical studies have evaluated the extent to which students still find ways to circumvent technological safeguards.
Oyelade et al. (2014) stated that understanding the perceptions of both students and administrators regarding the effectiveness of e-examinations is essential for identifying gaps and improving the system. This study is set against the backdrop of these challenges and opportunities, aiming to investigate the effectiveness of e-examinations in reducing malpractice at UNILORIN's CBT Center.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the issue of examination malpractice has remained a significant challenge in educational institutions across Nigeria. Traditional paper-based examinations often experience security breaches, impersonation, leakage of questions, and other forms of academic dishonesty, which compromise the credibility of assessment results (Okeke & Onwuka, 2018).
Additionally, the implementation of e-examinations is not without its challenges. Technical issues such as software glitches, inadequate computer literacy among some students, and unreliable internet connectivity can hinder the smooth administration of exams (Abubakar & Musa, 2020).
Furthermore, some students may experience anxiety or discomfort with the digital format, which can affect their performance and overall assessment outcomes. The effectiveness of e-examinations in completely eliminating malpractice is therefore questioned, given that students may still attempt to find ways to bypass technological safeguards. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of e-examinations in reducing malpractice at the UNILORIN CBT Center, exploring both the successes and limitations of digital assessment in ensuring credible and reliable examination practices.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of e-examinations in reducing malpractice at the UNILORIN CBT Center.
The specific objectives of the study include:
- To examine how e-examinations reduce incidents of examination malpractice among students.
- To assess the challenges faced by students and staff in the current CBT system.
- To determine the perceptions of students and administrators regarding the effectiveness of e-examinations.
- To provide recommendations for improving e-examinations in enhancing examination integrity.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- How does the use of e-examinations reduce incidents of malpractice among students at UNILORIN CBT Center?
- What are the challenges faced by students and staff during the administration of e-examinations?
- How do students and administrators perceive the effectiveness of e-examinations in promoting examination integrity?
- What improvements are necessary to enhance the effectiveness of e-examinations?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H0: The use of e-examinations at UNILORIN CBT Center has no significant effect on reducing examination malpractice.
- H1: The use of e-examinations at UNILORIN CBT Center significantly reduces examination malpractice among students.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the research will benefit students by revealing how e-examinations affect their learning experience and performance. Also, University administrators will be informed on strategies to optimize CBT systems and reduce malpractice effectively.
Furthermore, the educational system will benefit from recommendations that promote credible assessments and align local practices with international standards. In addition, policymakers will receive evidence for designing guidelines that strengthen digital examination practices.
Lastly, the study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the use of technology in education.
1.8 Scope of Study
The study is limited to UNILORIN's CBT Center in Kwara State, focusing only on the use of e-examinations for university-level assessments. The research covers students' experiences, administrative challenges, and the perceptions of staff involved in the administration of computer-based tests.
The timeframe of analysis is limited to the last five academic sessions to provide a contemporary perspective on e-examination implementation.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
The study was limited by technical challenges such as software glitches and unreliable internet connectivity, which affected data collection during some examination sessions. Some students' limited computer literacy was also a constraint, as it affected the speed and accuracy of responses during CBT assessments.
1.10 Definition of Terms
E-Examinations: Refers to the administration of tests and assessments through digital platforms such as computers or tablets instead of traditional paper-based methods (Ifinedo, 2019).
Computer-Based Testing (CBT): A system that delivers examinations electronically, monitors students' activities in real-time, and automates grading (Oyelade et al., 2014).
Malpractice: Any unethical or dishonest behavior by students during examinations, including cheating, collusion, impersonation, and leakage of examination content (Okeke & Onwuka, 2018).
Effectiveness: The degree to which e-examinations achieve their intended purpose of reducing malpractice and ensuring fair and credible assessment outcomes (Abubakar & Musa, 2020).
UNILORIN CBT Center: The University of Ilorin's dedicated facility for administering computer-based assessments to students across faculties, designed to enhance the security and integrity of examinations (Oladunjoye et al., 2014).
