ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to examine the effects of applied chemistry on industrial development in Ogun State. The motivation for this research arose from the growing importance of manufacturing industries to Nigeria's economy and the increasing need for efficient production systems capable of meeting global quality standards. Also, many industries continue to experience challenges associated with outdated production technologies, inadequate research funding, insufficient skilled manpower, poor infrastructure, and weak collaboration between industries and research institutions. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population consisted of 300 technical personnel drawn from selected manufacturing industries in Ogun State, while a sample size of 169 respondents was selected using the Taro Yamane formula and simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire validated by experts, and the responses were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square, t-test, and Pearson correlation at a 0.05 level of significance.

The findings revealed that 81.1% of the respondents agreed that applied chemistry improves industrial production processes, while 81.0% agreed that it enhances product quality. Furthermore, 81.7% agreed that applied chemistry contributes to industrial innovation and technological development, 80.5% agreed that it promotes effective environmental management practices, 81.6% identified inadequate funding, obsolete equipment, shortage of skilled manpower, and poor infrastructure as major challenges, 81.1% agreed that applied chemistry positively influences industrial development, 80.4% agreed that it improves industrial productivity, 81.7% agreed that it enhances product quality and manufacturing efficiency, and 80.5% supported increased investment in research, staff training, modern laboratory facilities, and stronger industry-research collaboration as effective improvement strategies.

The hypothesis tests also showed significant results with χ² = 31.846 (p = 0.000), t = 5.281 (p = 0.000), and positive correlations of r = 0.724 and r = 0.781 at a 0.05 level of significance. The outcome of this research shows that applied chemistry is a major driver of industrial development in Ogun State because it improves production efficiency, product quality, technological innovation, environmental sustainability, and overall industrial productivity. The study concludes that greater investment in chemical research, modern industrial technologies, skilled manpower development, and stronger collaboration between industries and research institutions is essential for achieving sustainable industrial growth and increased manufacturing competitiveness in Ogun State. Based on the result obtained, it was recommended that manufacturing companies should invest in modern laboratory facilities, production equipment, and quality control systems to strengthen industrial productivity and ensure compliance with established manufacturing standards.

1.1 Introduction

Applied chemistry is the branch of chemistry concerned with the practical utilization of chemical knowledge in the development of products, processes, and technologies that solve real-world problems, particularly in manufacturing, materials production, energy generation, and environmental management (Atkins & Jones, 2016). It bridges theoretical chemical principles with industrial applications such as polymer production, pharmaceuticals, cement manufacturing, petroleum refining, agrochemical formulation, and water treatment systems (Hill & Kolb, 2017). In the context of industrial development, applied chemistry provides the scientific foundation for innovation, process optimization, and the transformation of raw materials into value-added goods that drive economic growth and employment generation (UNIDO, 2021).

This chapter will address the background information that motivated this study, the challenges that prompted it, its aim, and its objectives as a preface to subsequent sections of the study. Additional factors include the study's significance, scope, limitations, research questions and hypotheses, and the definition of technical terms.

1.2 Background of Study

The development of applied chemistry and its influence on industrial growth in Ogun State is closely linked to the broader evolution of industrial chemistry and manufacturing in Nigeria. Applied chemistry, as a discipline, became more prominent during the colonial and post-independence industrial expansion period when chemical processes began to be systematically introduced into production systems such as cement, textiles, food processing, and petroleum refining (UNIDO, 2021). According to Atkins and Jones (2016), the global advancement of applied chemistry in the 20th century transformed industries by enabling controlled chemical reactions for large-scale production, which gradually influenced industrial practices in developing economies like Nigeria. Applied chemistry involves the practical use of chemical principles to develop industrial products and improve production processes across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, agriculture, textiles, and construction materials. This perspective is supported by Hill and Kolb (2017), who stated that applied chemistry provides the scientific foundation for industrial efficiency by enhancing reaction control, material synthesis, and quality assurance in manufacturing systems.

Similarly, Ogun State has emerged as one of Nigeria's most industrialized regions due to its strategic location and access to raw materials and markets. According to the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC, 2022), the state hosts a significant proportion of Nigeria's manufacturing enterprises, including cement factories, food processing industries, chemical plants, and agro-processing firms. In the same vein, Aremu (2020) reported that industrial growth in Ogun State has been driven by both domestic and foreign investments, particularly in sectors that depend heavily on chemical processes and innovations.

Applied chemistry remains central to the performance of these industries. Furthermore, UNIDO (2021) asserted that industrial development in emerging economies depends largely on the integration of scientific knowledge into production systems, particularly through chemical engineering and applied chemical technologies. Correspondingly, Gupta and Singh (2019) affirmed that industries that effectively apply chemical principles tend to experience improved productivity, reduced operational costs, and higher product quality compared to those relying on traditional methods. In the same vein, industrial chemical applications are essential for ensuring sustainability in manufacturing processes. According to Ogunleye and Adeyemi (2021), environmental challenges associated with industrialization, such as pollution and waste management issues, can be mitigated through proper application of green chemistry principles. Likewise, Anikwe (2018) stated that sustainable industrial development requires the adoption of cleaner production techniques, which are rooted in applied chemical innovations aimed at reducing toxic emissions and enhancing resource efficiency.

The relationship between applied chemistry and industrial development extends to technological advancement and innovation. According to Okafor and Eze (2020), technological growth in manufacturing sectors is strongly linked to the ability of industries to apply chemical research findings in product development and process optimization. Supporting this position, Iwuoha (2019) contended that countries and regions that invest in chemical research and development tend to achieve faster industrialization due to improved capacity for innovation and value addition. However, gaps in innovation adoption, industrial collaboration with research institutions, and environmental management practices continue to limit its full potential. This study is set against the backdrop of these realities.

1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that industrial development in Ogun State continues to face challenges related to inefficient production processes, limited technological innovation, inadequate adoption of modern chemical techniques, and environmental pollution arising from industrial waste (UNIDO, 2021). Many manufacturing firms still rely on outdated methods that do not fully integrate advances in applied chemistry, resulting in reduced productivity, higher production costs, and suboptimal product quality (Hill & Kolb, 2017).

Furthermore, there is insufficient collaboration between chemical research institutions and industrial operators, leading to a gap between scientific knowledge and practical industrial application. This disconnect limits the ability of industries to fully harness chemical innovations for improved material development, energy efficiency, and sustainable waste management practices. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the effects of applied chemistry on industrial development in Ogun State by assessing how chemical principles and technologies influence production efficiency, industrial growth, innovation, and environmental sustainability.
