1.1 Introduction
English Language is defined as a system of communication used for expressing thoughts, ideas, feelings, and information through spoken and written symbols. In Nigeria, English Language serves as the official language and the major medium of instruction in schools, especially from the upper primary level to higher institutions of learning. According to the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2014), English Language occupies a central position in the educational system because it facilitates teaching, learning, and national interaction among people from diverse linguistic backgrounds. The mastery of English Language among primary school pupils is therefore essential for effective communication, academic success, and future educational advancement. Primary education represents the foundation upon which the entire educational structure is built. At this level, pupils are expected to acquire basic literacy, numeracy, communication skills, and moral values necessary for lifelong learning.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
The teaching and learning of English Language in primary schools has attracted global attention due to its central role in communication, cognitive development, and academic achievement. English Language is defined as a structured system of communication that uses spoken and written symbols to express thoughts, ideas, and information across different contexts. In Nigeria, English Language serves as the official language and the major medium of instruction from upper primary to tertiary levels of education. According to Federal Republic of Nigeria (2014), English Language is a core subject in the basic education curriculum because it is essential for literacy development, national integration, and academic progression.
Primary education is regarded as the foundation of the educational system, where pupils are introduced to basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for lifelong learning. According to Piaget (2001), children at the primary school stage learn best through active engagement with their environment rather than passive reception of information. Piaget asserted that learners construct knowledge through interaction, exploration, and experience (Piaget, 2001).
Over the years, educators have expressed concern over the persistent poor performance of pupils in English Language in Nigeria. According to West African Examinations Council (WAEC) reports over the years, many pupils perform poorly in English Language examinations due to inadequate mastery of grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. One of the instructional approaches that has gained attention in early childhood and primary education is the play way method of teaching. The play way method is an instructional approach that involves the use of games, songs, dramatization, storytelling, puzzles, and other playful activities to facilitate learning.
According to Montessori (2013), children learn more effectively when they are allowed to explore learning materials freely in a playful and interactive environment. Montessori asserted that play is not separate from learning but a natural way through which children develop intellectual and social skills. In the context of English Language teaching, the play way method helps pupils to develop vocabulary, improve pronunciation, enhance listening skills, and build confidence in communication.
Isenberg and Jalongo (2010) asserted that, play-based learning promotes creativity, language development, and cognitive growth among children. They reported that children who are exposed to play-oriented instructional strategies tend to show higher levels of engagement and understanding compared to those taught using traditional lecture methods. In many Nigerian primary schools, however, the use of play way teaching method is still limited due to large class sizes, lack of instructional materials, and insufficient teacher training.
In many primary schools in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas, the teaching of English Language is still largely dominated by rote learning and memorization. According to Eze (2019), many teachers rely heavily on traditional methods that do not encourage active participation or meaningful engagement. Eze reported that this approach limits pupils' ability to think critically and form proper language concepts. On the other hand, schools that adopt child-centered approaches such as play way methods tend to record better pupil engagement and improved academic outcomes (Eze, 2019). In Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, concerns have been raised about the declining performance of pupils in English Language. According to classroom observations by education stakeholders, many pupils struggle with reading fluency, sentence construction, spelling, and comprehension skills. This study is therefore motivated by the need to investigate how play way method of teaching and concept formation influence the learning of English Language among primary school pupils in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. This study is set against the backdrop of improving pupils' academic performance through effective instructional strategies that promote active participation, meaningful learning, and cognitive development.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that many pupils experience difficulties in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English concepts effectively. On the other hand, when pupils fail to form clear concepts during instruction, learning becomes difficult and retention of knowledge becomes poor. Many primary school pupils encounter problems in understanding English expressions and grammatical concepts because teaching methods often fail to connect learning with practical experiences.
Additionally, pupils are denied opportunities to actively participate in learning activities that could improve their mastery of English Language. According to Federal Republic of Nigeria (2014), primary education should provide learners with permanent literacy and communication skills, yet these objectives may not be fully achieved where effective teaching methods are not properly utilized.
Furthermore, differences in pupils' learning abilities and backgrounds also contribute to the challenges faced in English Language learning. Some pupils easily grasp concepts when learning activities involve games and demonstrations, while others struggle because of limited exposure to stimulating classroom experiences. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the effects of play way method of teaching and concept formation on the learning of English Language in primary schools in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to investigate how play way method of teaching and concept formation influence pupils' learning of English Language in primary schools in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The specific objectives of the study are:
