ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to empirically analyze the Ola Rotimi's Written Proverbial Expressions of the novel titled Our Husband has Gone Mad Again by Ola Rotimi using Pragmatic Analysis. Being that the analysis of a play is rarely done, the researcher is not aware of any previous attempt to do Pragmatic Analysis of the text Our Husband has Gone Mad Again. Analysis on a conversation level has been used in the analysis of texts, but this study attempts to carry out a Pragmatic Analysis of Ola Rotimi’s Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again. The Norman Fair Clough theory has been applied in this approach, paying more attention on the socio cultural and political issues in the text.

The text is a social drama which the author has used to expose some societal ills in the society, gender inequality and power relations in the text. This study will be an additional work in the scholarship of the study of Pragmatic Analysis, especially at the undergraduate level. Based on the findings, it was recommended that proverbs should be considered important and be included in the curriculum of relevant undergraduate and post-graduate courses in order to strengthen their efficacy and preserve the societal cultural heritage. It is hoped that a renewed interest on proverbs will help substantially during this era of ethnic consciousness.

1.1 Introduction

Proverbs are sentential utterances, the meanings of which derive not from their lexical and syntactic values, but from the context in which they are uttered. Whereas the linguistic meanings of expressions in Semantics are often explicit, pragmatic meanings are implicit. Implicit meanings are those which are not clearly stated in words but which can be understood contextually if the speaker and the listener share a common cultural and mutual background. The literature of Ola Rotimi's “Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again” (Rotimi, 1977), as a general formulation, the ontological relatedness of drama and society has provided the anchor for various sociological perspectives on the development and growth of drama.

Ola Rotimi is playwrights of longevity and extensive productive life. Their plays in terms of ideological frames and mechanics of composition seem to transcend the limit of the boundary set by any identified generation of Nigerian dramaturgy, and therefore cannot be pushed into any single periodic category with absolute fidelity. An aspect of this study will explore how these playwrights handle trans-generational issues with respect to their points of convergence and divergence.

This research focuses on an attempt to carry out a Empirical Analysis of Ola Rotimi’s Our Husband has Gone Mad Again. This chapter therefore focuses on the purpose of study, scope of the study, justification, methodology, data description and author’s background.
