1.1 Introduction
Agro-chemicals are substances or mixtures used in agricultural production to enhance crop yield, control pests, and improve soil fertility (Adebayo & Ogunyemi, 2019). Their use is intended to boost productivity and minimize crop losses caused by weeds, pests, and diseases. However, while agro-chemicals contribute to short-term agricultural efficiency, they are also associated with numerous long-term environmental and health challenges. As noted by Okeke and Chukwuma (2021), the misuse or overuse of these substances is capable of degrading soil quality, contaminating water bodies, reducing biodiversity, and affecting human health through exposure to toxic residues.
In the context of rice cultivation, particularly in areas such as Ufuma in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, the adoption of agro-chemicals has become increasingly common. The humid tropical climate and fertile lowland areas of Ufuma make it favorable for rice production, but farmers often rely heavily on chemical inputs to maintain high yields (Nwankwo & Ezeani, 2022).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Agriculture remains a fundamental pillar of Nigeria's economy, providing employment and livelihood for a significant portion of the population, especially in rural areas. According to Eze (2020), agriculture contributes immensely to food security, rural development, and national income generation. Rice, as one of the major staple foods in Nigeria, plays a crucial role in the nation's food supply chain. Its production has expanded rapidly in recent years due to rising population growth and increased consumer demand. However, to meet this growing demand, farmers have adopted intensive production methods, which rely heavily on the use of agro-chemicals such as fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.
Okoye (2019) reported that agro-chemicals are chemical substances used in agricultural production to enhance crop yield, control pests, and improve soil fertility. They include fertilizers for plant nutrition, pesticides for pest control, and herbicides for weed management. These substances, when appropriately used, are essential tools for improving agricultural productivity. However, Nwankwo and Chukwuma (2021) asserted that the uncontrolled and excessive application of agro-chemicals has led to severe environmental problems in many developing countries, including Nigeria. They noted that chemical residues often leach into the soil and water systems, posing risks to human health, aquatic life, and soil microorganisms that sustain ecological balance.
In Nigeria, the use of agro-chemicals in rice farming has increased significantly due to farmers' quest for higher yields and pest-free production. Okoro and Ezeani (2020) stated that most rural farmers lack adequate knowledge of the safe handling and proper dosage of these chemicals, leading to misuse and environmental contamination. The runoff from farmlands during rainfall carries chemical residues into streams, rivers, and underground water sources, thereby polluting drinking water and threatening aquatic biodiversity. Ojo (2018) affirmed that such contamination often results in eutrophication, where nutrient overloads cause algal blooms and oxygen depletion in water bodies, making them unsuitable for aquatic life.
Similarly, Umeh and Adebayo (2021) contended that continuous use of inorganic fertilizers alters the natural composition of the soil, reducing its fertility and microbial activity over time. These changes compromise long-term soil productivity and sustainability. The residual effects of pesticides and herbicides are also known to cause bioaccumulation of toxic substances in food chains, with potential implications for human health. In rural communities like Ufuma in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, such environmental issues are of great concern, as most residents depend directly on the land and nearby water sources for their livelihoods and domestic needs.
The increasing reliance on agro-chemicals in rice cultivation has, therefore, created a paradox between ensuring food security and maintaining environmental sustainability. According to Chukwudi (2022), while agro-chemicals improve short-term agricultural output, their long-term effects undermine ecosystem integrity, reduce soil productivity, and expose farming communities to health hazards. The situation is worsened by inadequate enforcement of environmental regulations and poor agricultural extension services that fail to provide adequate guidance on safe chemical usage.
The case of Ufuma is particularly significant because rice farming forms a major part of the community's agricultural economy, and environmental degradation directly affects both productivity and human wellbeing. As reported by Nwafor (2020), the increasing pollution of farmlands and water bodies in many rice-producing regions of southeastern Nigeria is threatening the sustainability of agricultural practices and rural livelihoods. This study is set against the backdrop of evaluating the environmental effects of agro-chemical use in rice cultivation.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the use of agro-chemicals in rice farming is associated with soil degradation, loss of soil fertility, contamination of surface and groundwater, and the decline of biodiversity in the surrounding ecosystems (Chukwuma, 2018). Also, many local farmers lack adequate knowledge regarding the appropriate dosage, timing, and method of application of these chemicals, leading to misuse and environmental pollution. The runoff from rice fields during rainfall often carries chemical residues into nearby streams and rivers, thereby affecting aquatic organisms and contaminating sources of domestic water (Adebayo & Ogunyemi, 2020).
Furthermore, the economic necessity of maintaining high yields in rice cultivation is pushing farmers to depend heavily on agro-chemicals, despite their harmful side effects. Many farmers believe that without chemical inputs, productivity will drastically decline, threatening food security and household income (Nwankwo & Uzochukwu, 2019). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the environmental effects of the use of agro-chemicals for rice cultivation in Ufuma, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The main aim of this study is to examine the environmental effects of the use of agro-chemicals for rice cultivation in Ufuma, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The specific objectives of this research are to:
- To assess the level of farmers' awareness regarding the environmental and health risks associated with agro-chemical use.
- To identify the types of agro-chemicals commonly used by rice farmers in Ufuma.
- To examine the environmental effects of these agro-chemicals on soil, water, and biodiversity.
- To identify the challenges farmers face in adopting environmentally sustainable farming practices.
- To suggest appropriate measures that will reduce the negative environmental impacts of agro-chemical use in rice cultivation.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the research seeks to answer the following questions:
- What types of agro-chemicals are commonly used by rice farmers in Ufuma?
- What are the environmental effects of these agro-chemicals on soil, water, and biodiversity?
- What is the level of awareness among farmers regarding the environmental and health impacts of agro-chemical use?
- What challenges do farmers encounter in adopting sustainable agricultural practices?
- What measures will help reduce the environmental effects of agro-chemicals in rice cultivation?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H0: There is no significant relationship between the use of agro-chemicals and the environmental quality of rice farmlands in Ufuma.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between the use of agro-chemicals and the environmental quality of rice farmlands in Ufuma.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will guide farmers toward more sustainable farming practices that will preserve soil fertility and water quality. It will also assist government agencies and agricultural policymakers in implementing effective environmental protection laws.
Furthermore, the study will provide policymakers and environmental agencies with reliable data that will assist in formulating better agricultural and environmental management policies. In addition, the study will benefit local communities by raising awareness of how agro-chemical pollution affects health and the ecosystem.
Lastly, the research study will serve as a reference material for researchers and students interested in environmental and agricultural studies. The project will ultimately promote eco-friendly farming systems that will ensure long-term agricultural sustainability in Anambra State and beyond.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of this research is focused on the environmental effects of agro-chemical use in rice cultivation within Ufuma, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The research will cover farmers who are actively involved in rice production, as well as agricultural officials from the Anambra State Ministry of Agriculture.
1.9 Limitations of the study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Agro-Chemicals:
Agro-chemicals are chemical substances such as fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides used to enhance agricultural productivity (Okoye, 2020). They are designed to improve plant growth and control pests but may also have environmental side effects when misused.
Environmental Effects:
Environmental effects refer to the positive or negative impacts of human activities on natural ecosystems, including soil, water, air, and living organisms (Eze, 2021). In this study, it refers specifically to the degradation of soil and water resulting from agro-chemical use.
Rice Cultivation:
Rice cultivation is the process of planting, growing, and harvesting rice as a staple crop. It involves various farming activities that often require water management and soil fertility enhancement (Nwankwo, 2019).
Fertilizer:
A fertilizer is a chemical or organic substance applied to soil or plants to supply essential nutrients that enhance growth and yield (Chukwu, 2020).
Pesticides:
Pesticides are chemical substances used to kill or control pests such as insects, weeds, and fungi that threaten crop production (Okoro, 2018).
Sustainability:
Sustainability refers to the practice of using natural resources in ways that maintain their availability for future generations (Adebayo, 2019). It emphasizes environmental protection alongside economic productivity.
