1.1 Introduction
Cyber security refers to the collection of technologies, policies, processes, and practices designed to protect computer systems, networks, programs, and data from unauthorized access, cyber attacks, damage, or disruption (National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2020). In the modern digital environment, cyber security plays a critical role in safeguarding information assets and maintaining the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of digital systems used by organizations and individuals.
As financial institutions increasingly rely on information technology to carry out their daily operations, the need for effective cyber security measures has become more significant in protecting sensitive financial data and ensuring the stability of financial services. As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Cybersecurity has become an essential component of modern financial systems as organizations increasingly rely on digital technologies for data processing, communication, and financial transactions. The growth of information and communication technology has significantly transformed the global banking sector, allowing financial institutions to offer innovative services such as internet banking, mobile banking, electronic payment systems, and automated financial management platforms. These technological advancements have improved efficiency, accessibility, and speed in financial transactions. However, the expansion of digital financial systems has also created new vulnerabilities that cybercriminals exploit to gain unauthorized access to sensitive financial information. According to William Stallings (2018), cybersecurity refers to the protection of information systems against theft, disruption, and unauthorized access, emphasizing the need for strong security mechanisms to safeguard digital infrastructures.
The increasing reliance on digital platforms in the banking and business sectors has made cybersecurity a global priority. Financial institutions handle large volumes of sensitive information including customer data, financial records, and transaction details, making them prime targets for cybercriminals. Joseph Migga Kizza (2017) asserted that the banking sector is one of the most frequently targeted industries by cybercriminals due to the financial value associated with banking data and electronic transactions. As cybercriminals continue to develop sophisticated methods such as malware attacks, phishing schemes, ransomware, and identity theft, organizations must continuously strengthen their cybersecurity frameworks to prevent financial losses and protect customer information.
In many developing economies, including Nigeria, the adoption of digital banking technologies has grown rapidly over the past decade. Nigerian banks have invested significantly in technological infrastructure to support online banking platforms, automated teller machines, mobile payment systems, and real-time electronic transactions. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria (2023), digital banking systems have helped financial institutions expand their services to a larger population while improving operational efficiency. However, the expansion of digital banking has also increased exposure to cyber threats and electronic fraud.
Cybercrime has emerged as a major concern in Nigeria's financial sector. The growth of internet connectivity and electronic payment platforms has provided cybercriminals with opportunities to exploit weaknesses in digital systems. Nnamdi Nwankwo (2019) reported that cybercrime in Nigeria has evolved significantly with the widespread use of digital financial platforms, leading to increased cases of online fraud, identity theft, and unauthorized financial transactions. Furthermore, cybersecurity threats are not limited to external attacks alone. Internal vulnerabilities such as poor security management, inadequate employee training, and weak access control systems can also expose financial institutions to cyber risks.
Charles P. Pfleeger and Shari Lawrence Pfleeger (2015) stated that organizations often experience cybersecurity breaches due to weaknesses in internal security policies and human error rather than purely technical failures. The Nigerian banking sector therefore faces the challenge of balancing technological innovation with effective cyber security protection. As digital banking services continue to expand, banks must ensure that their cyber defense mechanisms are capable of preventing cyber attacks, detecting security breaches, and responding effectively to emerging threats. This study is set against the backdrop of the increasing reliance on digital financial systems in Nigeria and the growing threats posed by cybercriminal activities within the banking and business sectors.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the rapid adoption of digital technologies in the banking and business sectors in Nigeria has significantly transformed financial operations, customer service delivery, and business transactions. Online banking platforms, mobile payment systems, and electronic financial services are now widely used by banks and businesses to improve efficiency and accessibility. However, this digital transformation has also increased exposure to cyber threats such as data breaches, phishing attacks, ransomware, and unauthorized system access. As financial institutions increasingly rely on interconnected digital systems, the risk of cybercrime continues to grow, posing serious threats to financial stability, customer trust, and organizational reputation (Central Bank of Nigeria, 2023; Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System, 2022).
Furthermore, many organizations face challenges related to insufficient cybersecurity awareness, inadequate security infrastructure, shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals, and limited investment in advanced security technologies. On the other hand, the increasing sophistication of cybercriminal techniques continues to outpace existing security mechanisms, making it more difficult for organizations to detect and prevent cyber threats effectively (National Information Technology Development Agency, 2021). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to evaluate the cybersecurity measures adopted in the Nigerian banking and business sectors, with particular focus on Nigerian banks' cyber defense systems, in order to assess their effectiveness in addressing emerging cyber threats and improving the security of digital financial operations.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to evaluate cybersecurity measures in Nigerian banks and businesses, focusing on their effectiveness in mitigating cyber threats and improving overall digital security.
The specific objectives of this study are to:
- Examine the current cybersecurity measures implemented by Nigerian banks.
- Identify gaps and vulnerabilities in existing cyber defense systems.
- Assess the level of compliance with national and international cybersecurity standards.
- Determine the awareness and readiness of employees regarding cybersecurity practices.
- Provide recommendations for improving the effectiveness of cybersecurity measures in Nigerian financial institutions.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the study seeks to answer the following questions:
- What cybersecurity measures are currently implemented by Nigerian banks?
- What are the existing gaps and vulnerabilities in the current cyber defense systems?
- To what extent do Nigerian banks comply with national and international cybersecurity standards?
- How aware and prepared are employees regarding cybersecurity threats and best practices?
- What measures can be recommended to enhance the effectiveness of cybersecurity in Nigerian financial institutions?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
Based on the objectives of the study, the following hypothesis is formulated:
- Null Hypothesis (H ₀ ): There is no significant relationship between the existing cybersecurity measures in Nigerian banks and their effectiveness in preventing cyber threats.
- Alternative Hypothesis (H ₁ ): There is a significant relationship between the existing cybersecurity measures in Nigerian banks and their effectiveness in preventing cyber threats.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the research will support policymakers, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies in making informed decisions about cybersecurity strategies and investments. The findings will also support authorities such as the Central Bank of Nigeria in enhancing cybersecurity policies and monitoring frameworks.
Furthermore, the study will provide banks with detailed evaluation of existing cyber defense systems and guidance for improving security infrastructure. In addition, the research will increase awareness among bank staff about cybersecurity risks and best practices for mitigating threats.
Lastly, the findings will serve as a reference for future research on cybersecurity measures and risk management in the Nigerian financial sector. It will also contribute to improved protection of customer data, enhancing trust in digital banking systems.
1.8 Scope of Study
This study focuses on evaluating cybersecurity measures in the Nigerian banking sector, with particular emphasis on Deposit Money Banks in Lagos State, Nigeria.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
The study was limited by inadequate access to complete internal cybersecurity reports from banks, which affected the comprehensiveness of system evaluation. Additionally, some respondents delayed in providing information, and financial and time constraints was a factor that restricted the depth and scope of the research.

Cybersecurity:
Cybersecurity refers to measures designed to protect computer systems, networks, and data from unauthorized access, cyberattacks, and digital threats (Stallings, 2018).
Cyber Defense:
Cyber defense is the combination of strategies, technologies, and practices implemented to detect, prevent, and respond to cyber threats affecting an organization's digital infrastructure (Kizza, 2017).
Banking Sector:
The banking sector includes financial institutions engaged in deposit-taking, lending, and other financial services for individuals and businesses (Central Bank of Nigeria, 2023).
Digital Banking:
Digital banking refers to the use of electronic platforms, including online and mobile banking, to provide banking services to customers (Mitnick, 2017).
Cyber Threats:
Cyber threats are potential malicious attacks that target digital systems, networks, and data with the intent of causing harm or unauthorized access (Pfleeger & Pfleeger, 2015).
