1.1 Introduction
Drug storage refers to the systematic process of keeping pharmaceutical products under specified environmental conditions that preserve their identity, strength, quality, purity, and safety until they are dispensed or used by patients. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2020), appropriate drug storage involves maintaining recommended temperature, humidity, lighting, ventilation, cleanliness, and security to prevent deterioration and ensure that medicines remain effective throughout their shelf life. Proper storage practices are recognized as a fundamental component of pharmaceutical care because the therapeutic value of medicines depends not only on their manufacture but also on the conditions under which they are stored before use.
Community pharmacies occupy an important position within the healthcare system because they provide direct access to medicines and pharmaceutical services for the general public. As the last point in the medicine supply chain before drugs reach patients, community pharmacies are expected to maintain storage conditions that comply with national and international pharmaceutical standards.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Drug storage is a fundamental aspect of pharmaceutical practice because the quality, safety, and effectiveness of medicines largely depend on the conditions under which they are stored before reaching patients. According to the World Health Organization (2020), drug storage involves maintaining pharmaceutical products under recommended environmental conditions, including appropriate temperature, humidity, light exposure, ventilation, cleanliness, and security, in order to preserve their stability throughout their shelf life. Medicines are manufactured to meet strict quality standards, but these standards may be compromised when products are exposed to unfavorable storage conditions. Aulton and Taylor (2022) stated that, pharmaceutical stability is directly influenced by environmental factors, and poor storage practices may accelerate chemical degradation, reduce therapeutic potency, and increase the risk of treatment failure. Proper drug storage therefore remains an essential requirement for ensuring that medicines retain their intended quality until they are dispensed and consumed.
Similarly, according to International Pharmaceutical Federation (2021), community pharmacies represent the final point in the medicine supply chain where pharmacists have the responsibility of ensuring that medicines are stored in compliance with recognized professional and regulatory standards. The organization reported that maintaining appropriate storage conditions contributes significantly to patient safety, medicine quality assurance, and public confidence in pharmaceutical services. In the same vein, according to United States Pharmacopeia (2023), different medicines require different storage conditions depending on their chemical composition and dosage form. The publication stated that some medicines require refrigeration, while others should be protected from moisture, direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, or excessive heat.
Furthermore, according to National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (2021), Nigeria has established Good Storage and Distribution Practices to guide pharmacies, hospitals, wholesalers, and other medicine outlets in preserving the quality of pharmaceutical products. The agency asserted that pharmacies are expected to maintain temperature-controlled environments, monitor storage facilities regularly, implement stock rotation practices, document storage conditions, and ensure proper handling of medicines from receipt until dispensing. Supporting this position, according to Management Sciences for Health (2019), appropriate storage facilities should include organized shelving systems, adequate ventilation, reliable temperature monitoring devices, pest control measures, and clearly defined procedures for handling expired or damaged medicines. The organization reported that these practices improve inventory management while reducing operational losses associated with expired or compromised products. Proper documentation of storage conditions also assists pharmacy managers in identifying deviations early enough to prevent medicine deterioration.
Consistent with this view, according to Adebisi et al. (2020), maintaining recommended storage standards remains a significant challenge in many developing countries because of inadequate infrastructure, irregular electricity supply, limited cold-chain facilities, and insufficient staff training. The study reported that fluctuations in temperature and humidity are among the major causes of medicine instability in tropical environments such as Nigeria. Likewise, according to Olsson and Pal (2021), climate conditions in tropical regions expose pharmaceutical products to excessive heat and moisture, increasing the need for continuous environmental monitoring.
Relatedly, according to Rovers, Currie, and Hagel (2020), effective stock management complements good storage practices by ensuring that medicines nearing expiration are dispensed first through the First-Expire, First-Out (FEFO) principle. The researchers contended that poor inventory control often results in medicine wastage, financial losses, and unnecessary shortages of essential medicines. Along the same line, according to Kagashe and Massawe (2018), routine inspection of storage facilities and periodic staff training improve compliance with pharmaceutical storage standards and reduce the likelihood of dispensing degraded medicines.
This study is set against the backdrop of increasing concerns regarding the maintenance of appropriate drug storage conditions in community pharmacies, particularly within rapidly expanding urban healthcare environments where medicine quality, regulatory compliance, and patient safety remain essential priorities.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that proper drug storage remains an essential component of pharmaceutical practice because medicines are highly sensitive to environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, light, and contamination. In many community pharmacies, maintaining appropriate storage conditions is often affected by inconsistent temperature monitoring, inadequate storage facilities, overcrowded shelves, irregular stock rotation, and poor compliance with standard storage guidelines.
On the other hand, despite the existence of regulatory standards issued by health authorities, differences still exist in the level of compliance among community pharmacies, making continuous evaluation necessary to ensure the quality of medicines available to the public (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020; International Pharmaceutical Federation [FIP], 2021).
Furthermore, community pharmacies serve as the final point in the pharmaceutical supply chain before medicines are dispensed to patients, making proper storage practices a critical responsibility of pharmacists and pharmacy personnel (Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, 2022; NAFDAC, 2021). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to evaluate the drug storage conditions in community pharmacies using HealthPlus Pharmacy, Lagos, as a case study.
