1.1 Introduction
In the modern educational environment, computer literacy is increasingly recognized as a critical factor in determining students' academic success. According to Adeyemo (2018), students who are proficient in computer use are better able to access learning resources, conduct research, and present information effectively, which significantly influences their overall academic performance. In many Nigerian schools, however, the level of computer literacy among students remains a significant concern. Olaniyi (2020) reported that limited access to computers, inadequate training, and insufficient integration of technology into the curriculum are major factors contributing to the low level of digital competence among students. This lack of proficiency not only affects students' ability to complete academic tasks efficiently but also hinders their capacity to adapt to an increasingly digitalized educational environment (Adebayo, 2021).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
The rapid integration of technology into educational systems has transformed the learning process, making computer literacy an essential skill for students at all levels. Computer literacy is the ability to efficiently use computers to perform tasks such as word processing, data analysis, internet research, digital communication, and problem-solving (Oladipo, 2019). According to Adeyemo (2018), students who are proficient in computer use are better positioned to access diverse learning resources, organize academic information effectively, and engage in interactive learning processes, all of which contribute positively to academic performance. In the contemporary educational context, computer literacy is no longer an optional skill but a fundamental requirement for success (Adeyemo, 2018).
Obafemi (2020) reported that students with low computer literacy often experience difficulties in completing assignments, participating in digital learning platforms, and adapting to modern teaching methods (Obafemi, 2020). Olaniyi (2020) stated that computer literacy enhances students' research and critical thinking skills, enabling them to independently explore academic topics beyond the classroom setting (Olaniyi, 2020). Students who can navigate digital platforms effectively are better able to locate relevant information, analyze data, and present findings in organized formats.
Adebayo (2021) affirmed that the level of computer literacy among students is directly linked to the availability of digital resources and the quality of computer education provided in schools (Adebayo, 2021). Inadequate access to computers, poorly equipped laboratories, and insufficient instructional time dedicated to technology education hinder the development of essential digital skills. Okeke (2017) contend that computer literacy also equips students with skills that extend beyond academic performance, including digital communication, collaborative work, and self-directed learning (Okeke, 2017).
According to Nwankwo (2019), the integration of technology in education not only supports academic achievement but also fosters creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills among students. Schools that emphasize computer literacy prepare students to adapt to dynamic learning environments, engage in online research, and produce high-quality assignments and projects. Eze (2018) articulated that, bridging the gap in computer literacy requires deliberate interventions, such as providing adequate infrastructure, integrating digital skills into the curriculum, and offering continuous training for both students and teachers. This study is set against the backdrop of these challenges and opportunities in Ese-Odo, Ondo State.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the rapid advancement of technology has transformed the educational landscape, with computer literacy becoming an essential skill for students in contemporary learning environments. According to Adeyemo (2018), students who are proficient in computer use are more likely to access a wide range of educational resources, manage information effectively, and engage in interactive learning processes. On the other hand, the reliance on traditional teaching methods without sufficient technological support limits students' capacity to compete academically with peers in more technologically advanced environments (Adebayo, 2021).
Furthermore, the integration of technology into academic activities is essential in enhancing students' research skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. In addition, studies have affirmed that students with low computer literacy experience higher levels of academic stress as they struggle to meet the requirements of computer-based assignments and examinations (Okeke, 2017). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the impact of computer literacy on students' academic performance in Ese-Odo, Ondo State.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of computer literacy on students' academic performance in Ese-Odo, Ondo State.
The specific objectives of the study include:
- To examine the relationship between computer literacy and students' academic performance.
- To evaluate the level of computer literacy among students in Ese-Odo.
- To identify the challenges students face in acquiring computer skills.
- To determine the adequacy of computer facilities and teaching support in schools.
- To provide recommendations for improving computer literacy to enhance academic outcomes.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the study will seek to answer the following questions:
- What is the level of computer literacy among students in Ese-Odo, Ondo State?
- What is the relationship between computer literacy and students' academic performance?
- What challenges do students face in acquiring computer skills?
- Are the computer facilities and teaching support in schools adequate for developing digital skills?
- What strategies can be implemented to improve computer literacy and academic performance?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H0: There is no significant relationship between computer literacy and students' academic performance in Ese-Odo, Ondo State.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between computer literacy and students' academic performance in Ese-Odo, Ondo State.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will help students understand the importance of computer literacy in improving their academic performance. Also, the study will inform policymakers in making evidence-based decisions for educational technology integration.
Furthermore, the study will provide school administrators with data to improve computer facilities and learning resources. In addition, this research will guide teachers in designing lesson plans that incorporate ICT effectively.
Lastly, this research will assist researchers in further studies on digital literacy and academic achievement in Nigerian schools.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on the impact of computer literacy on students' academic performance. The study covers only secondary school students and it's limited to some selected schools in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State, ensuring a manageable and representative study of the local educational environment.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
The study was limited by inadequate access to computer facilities in many schools, which restricted students' ability to practice and demonstrate computer literacy. It was also constrained by time and financial resources, which affected the breadth of data collection.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Computer Literacy: The ability to use computers and related technology efficiently for tasks such as word processing, internet navigation, data analysis, and digital communication (Oladipo, 2019).
Academic Performance: The measurable outcomes of students' learning, often represented by grades, examination results, and the ability to complete assignments effectively (Adeyemo, 2018).
ICT (Information and Communication Technology): The set of tools, applications, and resources used to communicate, create, store, and manage information digitally (Olaniyi, 2020).
