1.1 Introduction
Digitalization refers to the integration and application of digital technologies to transform traditional processes, improve operational performance, enhance communication, and support data-driven decision-making within organizations. It involves the use of technologies such as information and communication systems, automation, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, electronic documentation, and real-time data exchange to increase efficiency, transparency, and productivity across different sectors (International Maritime Organization [IMO], 2021). In the maritime industry, digitalization has become an important driver of operational excellence by enabling ports and shipping organizations to streamline activities, reduce delays, improve resource utilization, and enhance service delivery. The maritime sector plays a significant role in facilitating international trade and economic development, with over 80 percent of global merchandise trade transported through sea routes (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development [UNCTAD], 2023).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Digitalization has become one of the most significant drivers of transformation across industries, particularly in sectors that rely heavily on information exchange, logistics coordination, and operational efficiency. According to Bharat Vagadia (2020), digitalization involves the integration of digital technologies into organizational processes to improve productivity, enhance decision-making, and create greater value through innovation. In the maritime industry, digitalization extends beyond the mere adoption of information technology to include the automation of port operations, electronic documentation, data analytics, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and real-time communication systems. Similarly, International Maritime Organization (2021) reported that digital transformation has become an essential component of modern maritime governance because it enhances navigational safety, improves operational efficiency, strengthens environmental sustainability, and promotes effective collaboration among maritime stakeholders. The organization further stated that the adoption of digital technologies enables ports to reduce manual procedures, improve information accuracy, accelerate cargo processing, and facilitate seamless communication between shipping companies, customs authorities, terminal operators, and government agencies.
In the same vein, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (2023) asserted that maritime transport remains the backbone of international trade, accounting for more than 80 percent of the volume of global merchandise trade. The report emphasized that efficient port operations are fundamental to sustaining global supply chains and promoting economic growth. As global trade expands, ports are increasingly investing in digital infrastructure to improve operational performance, minimize cargo delays, optimize vessel turnaround time, and reduce logistics costs. The report further noted that countries with advanced digital port systems generally achieve higher levels of trade competitiveness and operational reliability than those relying predominantly on manual processes. Furthermore, according to World Bank (2023), digital technologies have transformed port management by enabling real-time monitoring of operations, predictive maintenance of port equipment, automated scheduling, and electronic data exchange.
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (2022) affirmed that the digital transformation of transport and logistics has improved the efficiency of freight movement by supporting automation, integrated information systems, and intelligent decision-making. The organization contended that smart ports are increasingly using digital technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and big data analytics to optimize terminal operations, strengthen security, improve asset utilization, and enhance customer satisfaction.
Building on this perspective, according to Michael Porter and James Heppelmann (2014), digital technologies create competitive advantages by generating continuous data that improve operational control, performance monitoring, and strategic decision-making. Within maritime operations, the availability of accurate and timely information enables port managers to allocate resources efficiently, anticipate operational disruptions, and respond promptly to changing logistics demands. Consequently, digitalization has evolved from being an optional technological upgrade to becoming a strategic necessity for port authorities seeking to remain competitive in an increasingly interconnected global economy. Supporting this position, according to International Association of Ports and Harbors (2021), the concept of smart ports has gained considerable attention because it integrates advanced technologies into every stage of port operations. The association reported that digitally enabled ports experience improvements in vessel scheduling, cargo tracking, berth allocation, security management, environmental monitoring, and customer service.
This study is set against the backdrop of the growing global transition toward digital maritime operations and the continuous efforts of the Nigerian Ports Authority to modernize port services through digital technologies, with the objective of examining the impact of digitalization on maritime operations efficiency.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the increasing adoption of digital technologies has transformed global maritime operations by improving cargo handling, vessel traffic management, port security, and information exchange among stakeholders. Despite these advancements, many developing countries, including Nigeria, continue to experience operational inefficiencies arising from inadequate digital infrastructure, inconsistent implementation of automated systems, and poor integration of information platforms (International Maritime Organization [IMO], 2021).
Furthermore, the Nigerian maritime sector has introduced several digital initiatives such as electronic payment systems, port community platforms, automated cargo documentation, and online vessel processing to modernize port operations. However, reports indicate that delays in cargo processing, system downtime, duplication of documentation procedures, network failures, and human-related bottlenecks still hinder the realization of the full benefits of digitalization. These persistent operational challenges reduce efficiency, increase logistics costs, and negatively affect customer satisfaction and trade facilitation (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development [UNCTAD], 2023). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of digitalization on maritime operations efficiency.
