1.1 Introduction
Globalization refers to the increasing connection and integration of countries, businesses, and economies through international trade, technology, communication, and movement of goods and services across borders. According to Anthony Giddens (1990), globalization involves the intensification of worldwide social relations that link distant locations in such a way that events in one part of the world influence activities in another. In the business environment, globalization has changed the way organizations operate by creating opportunities for access to international markets, foreign investments, advanced technologies, and improved business practices.
International trade is an important aspect of globalization because it allows countries and businesses to exchange goods and services beyond their domestic markets. According to Krugman, Obstfeld, and Melitz (2018), international trade enables economies to benefit from specialization, increased productivity, and access to a wider range of products. Through globalization, businesses are able to source raw materials from different countries, reach international customers, and compete in a broader marketplace. However, the benefits of globalization depend on the ability of businesses to adapt to changing market conditions and overcome challenges associated with global competition.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Globalization has become one of the most influential forces shaping the modern economic environment by connecting countries, businesses, and markets through trade, technology, communication, and investment flows. It has transformed the way businesses operate by reducing geographical barriers and creating opportunities for organizations to access wider markets beyond their domestic boundaries. Globalization has significantly influenced international trade by increasing the movement of goods, services, capital, and technology across national borders. According to Paul Krugman, Obstfeld, and Melitz (2018), international trade allows countries and businesses to benefit from specialization, improved productivity, and access to resources that may not be available within their local environment. Through globalization, businesses are able to expand their customer base, obtain raw materials from different countries, and introduce innovative products into new markets. However, the ability of businesses to benefit from these opportunities depends on their financial strength, technological capacity, managerial skills, and ability to respond to changing global market conditions.
Similarly, Joseph Stiglitz (2002) reported that globalization creates significant economic opportunities through increased international cooperation and market integration, but it also produces challenges for businesses and economies that are not adequately prepared. The increasing presence of foreign goods and multinational corporations has intensified competition among local businesses, requiring them to improve product quality, reduce costs, and adopt modern business strategies. In developing economies such as Nigeria, globalization has created both advantages and difficulties, particularly for small and medium-scale enterprises that often struggle with limited resources and inadequate access to global markets.
In the Nigerian business environment, globalization has contributed to changes in production, distribution, and marketing activities. The growth of globalization has influenced the participation of Nigerian businesses in international trade through improved access to information, digital platforms, and international business networks. According to Manuel Castells (2010), advances in information and communication technology have created a network-based global economy where businesses can connect, exchange information, and conduct transactions across borders more efficiently. This development has provided opportunities for businesses to reach international customers and improve their competitiveness. However, businesses with limited technological knowledge and infrastructure may find it difficult to take full advantage of these global opportunities.
Moreover, globalization has affected small and medium-scale enterprises in Nigeria by influencing their access to foreign markets, investment opportunities, and business partnerships. According to Dani Rodrik (2011), globalization requires a balance between international economic integration and domestic policies that protect and support local economic development. This suggests that while globalization can promote business expansion, government policies, infrastructure development, and institutional support are important factors that determine whether local businesses benefit from international trade. Without adequate support systems, many businesses may experience challenges such as increased competition from imported products, unstable exchange rates, and difficulties complying with international market requirements.
Likewise, globalization has changed consumer behavior by increasing access to diverse products and exposing customers to international quality standards. According to Philip Kotler and Keller (2016), changes in consumer expectations require businesses to continuously improve their products, services, and marketing approaches to remain relevant. This development has placed pressure on businesses in local communities, including Auchi, to adopt effective strategies that meet changing customer demands. Businesses that fail to adapt may lose market share to competitors that provide better quality products and services. This study is set against the backdrop of examining the impact of globalization on international trade among selected businesses in Auchi.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that globalization has significantly changed the way businesses participate in international trade by creating opportunities for wider markets, improved technology transfer, and increased access to foreign goods and services. On the other hand, some businesses in Auchi face difficulties in adapting to global competition due to limited capital, inadequate knowledge of international markets, poor access to modern technology, and challenges in meeting international standards.
Additionally, globalization has increased competition among local businesses as imported products and multinational companies enter domestic markets. Also, selected businesses in Auchi may experience challenges such as high production costs, unstable exchange rates, limited export opportunities, and insufficient government support, which may reduce their ability to benefit fully from international trade activities.
Furthermore, although globalization provides opportunities for business expansion, employment creation, and access to international customers, many small and medium-scale businesses in Auchi still struggle to understand and utilize global trade opportunities effectively. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of globalization on international trade among selected businesses in Auchi.

1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
