ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to examine the impact of Management Information System (MIS) on the insurance industry in Nigeria, with particular attention to operational efficiency, management decision-making, claims processing, customer service delivery, and challenges affecting effective MIS utilization. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 150 employees of selected insurance companies in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, and inferential statistical techniques, while chi-square and t-test were used to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that 58 respondents (38.7%) strongly agreed and 55 (36.7%) agreed that MIS improves operational efficiency, while the chi-square result was 78.60 against a critical value of 9.488. Furthermore, 61 respondents (40.7%) strongly agreed and 52 (34.7%) agreed that MIS supports management decision-making, with a calculated t-value of 9.73. The outcome of this research indicates that Management Information System has a significant effect on major areas of insurance operations, including operational efficiency, management decision-making, claims processing, and customer service delivery. The study concludes that effective MIS utilization is important to insurance companies and requires adequate infrastructure, skilled personnel, reliable systems, and continuous managerial support. Based on the result obtained from this research, it was recommended that insurance companies should provide regular training and capacity development for employees to improve their ability to use MIS effectively.

1.1 Introduction

Management Information System (MIS) refers to an organised system that collects, processes, stores and provides information to managers for planning, control and decision-making. It combines people, technology, data and organisational procedures to produce useful information for business activities (Laudon & Laudon, 2022). In Nigeria, the use of information technology in insurance has continued to develop as insurance organisations respond to changing customer expectations and regulatory requirements. NAICOM has established information technology standards aimed at improving computerisation, service delivery and insurance policy data management (NAICOM, 2021). The effectiveness of Management Information System is therefore relevant to the performance of insurance companies. When information is available at the right time and in the right form, managers are better positioned to monitor operations and respond to business problems.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.

1.2 Background of Study

Historically, insurance in Nigeria developed from the need to provide financial protection against different forms of risk. Insurance business was initially influenced by foreign trading activities and gradually developed into a more organised industry as commercial activities expanded. Over time, government introduced laws and institutions to regulate insurance operations and protect policyholders. The Nigerian insurance industry later became more formally regulated through different laws covering areas such as motor insurance, marine insurance, reinsurance and general insurance business.

Management Information System is concerned with the use of people, procedures, data and technology to produce information that supports organisational activities and management decisions. As cited by Laudon and Laudon (2022), information systems connect technology with business processes and provide information that supports coordination, control and decision-making. In a simple business setting, this means that an organisation does not only need computers; it needs a properly organised system that ensures that the right information gets to the right person at the right time.

The importance of MIS is particularly visible in the insurance industry because insurance operations depend heavily on information. Insurance companies collect information about policyholders, insured properties, vehicles, businesses, premiums, claims and other risks. According to Vaughan and Vaughan (2014), insurance operations depend on the identification, measurement and management of risks, which requires reliable information. Similarly, accurate records are important when determining policy terms, assessing claims and monitoring the financial position of an insurance business.

In Nigeria, the insurance industry operates within a regulated environment. According to the National Insurance Commission, NAICOM is responsible for supervising and regulating insurance business in the country and protecting policyholders and other stakeholders (NAICOM, 2026). The traditional approach to managing insurance information relied heavily on physical documents and manual processes. Such processes often required employees to search through files, enter information repeatedly and transfer documents between departments. As insurance businesses expanded, these approaches became increasingly difficult to manage.

In the Nigerian insurance industry, technology has also become part of the wider effort to improve insurance access and service delivery. According to NAICOM (2025), the guidelines for insurtech operations provide a regulatory framework for technology-driven insurance activities. The guidelines recognise areas such as claims management, customer service, insurance aggregation and the use of technology to deliver insurance services. Supporting this position, the development of data exchange systems is also becoming relevant to insurance regulation and administration. Recent initiatives by NAICOM have focused on data verification, information exchange and stronger digital cooperation with other institutions (NAICOM, 2025). Such developments suggest that insurance organisations increasingly need systems capable of communicating accurately with other approved platforms and institutions.

The Nigerian insurance industry is currently undergoing important regulatory and technological changes. The Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025 replaced several earlier insurance laws and introduced a more modern regulatory framework (NAICOM, 2025). The reform places attention on areas such as policyholder protection, financial stability, innovation, insurance penetration and risk-based supervision.

This study is set against the backdrop of the increasing need for reliable, secure and timely information as Nigeria's insurance industry continues to adopt digital technologies and undergo regulatory transformation.

1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that Management Information System (MIS) has become important to the way insurance companies collect, store, process and use information for daily operations. Insurance companies handle large volumes of customer records, policy details, premium payments, claims and financial information, making accurate and timely information necessary for effective operations. However, some insurance organisations in Nigeria still experience problems associated with slow information processing, fragmented records, manual procedures and delays in retrieving customer information (NAICOM, 2021).

Furthermore, the growing use of digital insurance services has increased the need for reliable MIS within the Nigerian insurance industry. NAICOM's recent regulatory direction includes digital transformation, innovation, data exchange and technology-driven insurance services, showing the increasing importance of information systems in the sector (NAICOM, 2026). On the other hand, differences in technological infrastructure, staff skills, system integration and access to reliable power have the potential to limit the effective use of MIS by some insurance organisations. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of Management Information System (MIS) on the insurance industry in Nigeria.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to examine the impact of Management Information System (MIS) on the insurance industry in Nigeria.

Lastly, the study will provide information that is relevant to discussions on information management, digitalisation, data security and technology use within the insurance industry.

1.8 Scope of the Study

The scope of this research is focused on the impact of Management Information System on the insurance industry in Nigeria. For practical purposes, the study is proposed to use selected insurance companies operating in Rivers State, with particular attention to insurance offices in Port Harcourt.

1.9 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
  3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
