1.1 Introduction
Maritime insurance is a specialized form of insurance that provides financial protection against losses arising from maritime activities, including damage to ships, cargo, terminals, offshore facilities, and liabilities associated with marine transportation. It serves as an essential risk management mechanism by transferring the financial burden of unforeseen maritime losses from individuals and organizations to insurance providers, thereby promoting confidence and stability in international trade and shipping operations (International Maritime Organization [IMO], 2023).
Risk management has become a critical component of the maritime industry because shipping operations are exposed to numerous uncertainties that threaten the safety of vessels, cargo, crew members, and investments. These risks include piracy, collisions, marine pollution, adverse weather conditions, equipment failure, fire outbreaks, theft, and human error (International Organization for Standardization [ISO], 2018).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Maritime insurance has become an indispensable component of global maritime commerce because it provides financial protection against risks associated with the transportation of goods and vessels across waterways. According to John D. Kimball (2009), maritime insurance is a contractual arrangement through which insurers undertake to indemnify ship owners, cargo owners, and other stakeholders against losses arising from marine perils in exchange for the payment of premiums. The importance of maritime insurance has continued to grow alongside the expansion of international trade, as businesses increasingly rely on marine transportation for the movement of raw materials, manufactured goods, and petroleum products.
According to International Maritime Organization (2023), the maritime industry remains the backbone of international trade, accounting for the movement of the majority of goods traded globally. The organization reported that maritime transport plays a significant role in promoting economic growth, industrial development, and international commercial integration. However, shipping operations are exposed to numerous uncertainties, including vessel collisions, cargo damage, piracy, marine pollution, fire outbreaks, equipment failure, adverse weather conditions, and human error.
Similarly, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (2023) stated that the continued expansion of international shipping has increased the complexity of maritime risks, making insurance an essential instrument for sustaining global trade. The report affirmed that effective marine insurance contributes to commercial stability by ensuring that businesses recover financially after insured losses, thereby minimizing disruptions to trade and investment. In addition, insurance encourages investors and shipping companies to undertake commercial activities with greater confidence because the financial burden associated with unexpected maritime losses is substantially reduced.
According to Paul Hopkin (2018), risk management is a systematic process of identifying, assessing, controlling, monitoring, and financing risks that may affect the achievement of organizational objectives. He asserted that effective risk management requires organizations to adopt preventive measures while also developing financial mechanisms capable of absorbing losses whenever risks materialize. Within the maritime industry, insurance represents one of the most effective financial risk management strategies because it provides compensation for losses that cannot be completely prevented through operational controls. Furthermore, International Organization for Standardization (2018) reported that organizations achieve greater resilience when risk management is integrated into strategic decision-making and operational processes. The guideline emphasized that effective risk management promotes informed decision-making, improves organizational performance, enhances stakeholder confidence, and strengthens business continuity. In the maritime sector, insurance serves as a financial safeguard that enables shipping companies and cargo owners to recover from unexpected incidents while maintaining operational stability.
Moreover, Central Bank of Nigeria (2022) stated that a stable insurance industry contributes to financial system stability by absorbing business risks and facilitating economic activities across different sectors. The report affirmed that insurance institutions strengthen business resilience through efficient risk transfer mechanisms, thereby reducing the financial consequences of unforeseen events. Supporting this position, Emmanuel O. Akinbola and Samuel S. Ajemunigbohun (2021) reported that marine insurance enhances organizational risk management by providing financial compensation, encouraging compliance with safety standards, and promoting sound underwriting practices. They contended that insurance companies increasingly participate in risk prevention through inspections, advisory services, and continuous assessment of clients' operational exposures.
This study is set against the backdrop of the growing importance of maritime insurance in managing operational and financial risks within Nigeria's maritime industry, the increasing complexity of maritime trade, persistent challenges affecting insurance effectiveness, and the need to evaluate how maritime insurance provided by Leadway Assurance Company Limited contributes to effective risk management and sustainable maritime business operations.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that maritime transportation remains one of the most important channels for international trade, yet it is continuously exposed to risks such as cargo loss, vessel damage, piracy, collisions, fire outbreaks, theft, and adverse weather conditions. These risks often result in substantial financial losses for ship owners, cargo owners, freight operators, and insurers. Although maritime insurance is designed to provide financial protection against these uncertainties, many organizations still experience challenges in effectively utilizing insurance as a strategic risk management tool, thereby limiting its contribution to business continuity and operational resilience (International Maritime Organization [IMO], 2023).
However, questions remain regarding the extent to which the company's maritime insurance policies contribute to effective risk identification, risk transfer, financial protection, and loss recovery. There is also limited empirical evidence examining how maritime insurance influences overall risk management performance within the Nigerian insurance industry, particularly from the perspective of the study area (Ajemunigbohun & Oreshile, 2021). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of maritime insurance on risk management.

It will also assist maritime operators, including ship owners and cargo owners, to better appreciate the importance of marine insurance in reducing financial losses from unexpected maritime incidents.
Furthermore, the study will serve as a useful source of information for the National Insurance Commission and other regulators in evaluating the role of marine insurance in strengthening risk management within Nigeria's maritime sector.
Lastly, the result obtained will contribute to existing academic literature by providing relevant information for students, lecturers, and researchers interested in maritime insurance and risk management. It will also provide future researchers with relevant reference material for conducting further studies on maritime insurance, insurance management, and related areas of study.
