1.1 Introduction
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a structured programme established by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to expose students of tertiary institutions to practical work experience in their respective fields of study (Okojie, 2014). The programme is intended to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in classrooms and the practical skills required in the workplace (Adebisi, 2019). SIWES is particularly relevant in Nigeria where the employability of graduates is often challenged by a mismatch between academic training and industry requirements. Through this programme, students acquire both technical and soft skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and adaptability which are vital in professional settings (Eze & Chinedu, 2020).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a practical training programme introduced to bridge the divide between academic learning and industrial practice for students in Nigerian tertiary institutions. According to the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) policy framework, SIWES was established not only to give students first hand exposure to real work environments but also to inculcate relevant industrial competencies that classroom instruction alone is not able to provide (Okojie, 2014). The programme involves placement of students in industries where they are attached to relevant departments for a specified period during which they are expected to observe participate and gain practical experience that relates to their field of study. SIWES is therefore considered a critical component of the educational and professional development of students across disciplines, particularly in science, engineering and technology fields.
Reported that while SIWES is intended to strengthen students' capacity for problem solving critical thinking and adaptability, the actual outcomes of the programme vary significantly among participants. A study by Adebisi (2019) found that the extent to which students benefit from SIWES is largely dependent on the quality of training supervision the relevance of the tasks assigned and the level of engagement between students and workplace mentors. Adebisi asserted that when students are well supervised and assigned meaningful responsibilities SIWES enhances their technical and interpersonal skills; however, when supervision is weak or tasks are routine and unrelated to academic goals students are not able to translate their industrial experience into improved competence after the programme.
The linkage between theory and practice is a central theme in the rationale for SIWES, and numerous researchers have examined how well this objective is achieved. Eze and Chinedu (2020) stated that many students complete SIWES with only a superficial understanding of workplace processes, as some host organisations assign students to clerical or irrelevant tasks that do not reflect the actual demands of their profession. These authors contend that such misalignment undermines the effectiveness of SIWES and weakens its contribution to students' long term career development. They further reported that the inconsistency in experience is often linked to a lack of structured evaluation mechanisms and communication between the educational institutions and industrial partners.
In contrast, several studies highlight the benefits of SIWES when properly implemented. According to Ugwu (2021) students who are engaged in meaningful industrial tasks during SIWES develop a stronger sense of professional identity self confidence and practical competence that is highly valued in the job market. The study affirmed that employers frequently prefer graduates who have completed industrial attachment because they exhibit workplace readiness greater adaptability and reduced training costs for organisations.
Studies also show that socio economic and infrastructural challenges within industries influence students' experience during SIWES. Many industries lack the capacity or resources to provide comprehensive training relevant to advanced technologies, resulting in a training environment where students are not exposed to the full range of contemporary industrial practices. Furthermore research suggests that the framework for assessing the outcomes of SIWES is itself complex and multifaceted. This study is set against the backdrop of understanding these complex dimensions of SIWES experience and evaluating how the programme influences graduates' competencies employment prospects and professional development.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is designed to prepare students for the challenges of the world of work by exposing them to industrial and workplace environments relevant to their field of study (Okojie, 2014). However many students complete SIWES with limited understanding of how the skills and experience gained during the programme influence their employability and professional development after graduation. Employers often observe that graduates lack practical skills related to their discipline despite having participated in SIWES which raises concerns about the relevance and implementation of the scheme (Adebisi, 2019).
There is also evidence that a significant number of students engage in SIWES activities that are unrelated to their core academic areas, leading to experiences that is not beneficial to their career prospects (Eze & Chinedu, 2020). On the other hand many students report that Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) experiences help them develop soft skills such as communication problem solving and teamwork that are valuable after completion of the programme.
Furthermore the lack of standardized evaluation mechanisms by academic institutions and industry partners is another problem that makes it difficult to assess the real impact of SIWES on students' competencies and transition into the workforce (Ugwu, 2021). In addition some students complete SIWES with minimal supervision and mentorship which is critical for meaningful learning and professional growth during the attachment period. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the impact of SIWES on students after the completion of the programme.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to assess the impact of SIWES on students' professional development and employability after the completion of the programme.
The specific objectives of the study include:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of SIWES in providing relevant practical skills for students in their respective fields of study.
- To examine the challenges in the implementation of SIWES within educational institutions and host organisations.
- To determine the relationship between students' SIWES experience and their career readiness after graduation.
- To assess the role of industrial supervision, mentorship, and evaluation in achieving the goals of SIWES.
- To provide recommendations for improving the quality and relevance of SIWES for future students.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the study will seek to answer the following research questions:
- How effective is SIWES in providing practical skills relevant to students' fields of study?
- What are the major challenges students face during SIWES?
- How does participation in SIWES influence students' career readiness after graduation?
- To what extent do supervision, mentorship, and evaluation impact the outcomes of SIWES?
- What measures can be taken to enhance the quality and relevance of SIWES for students?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: There is no significant relationship between participation in SIWES and the enhancement of students' practical skills and employability after completion of the programme.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between participation in SIWES and the enhancement of students' practical skills and employability after completion of the programme.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Participation in SIWES does not significantly improve students' practical skills and employability after completion of the programme.
- H1: Participation in SIWES significantly improves students' practical skills and employability after completion of the programme.
1.7 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will inform educational institutions on how to improve supervision, assessment, and integration of industrial training into academic curricula, thereby ensuring that students derive maximum benefit from their industrial attachments. The study will also inform policymakers on the effectiveness of SIWES as a tool for bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and industrial practice.
Furthermore, this research will benefit students by identifying the key areas of strength and weakness within the SIWES programme. In addition, the study will provide employers and host organizations with feedback on the preparedness and competencies of students, which will help tailor training assignments that align with industry expectations and professional standards.
Lastly, the research will serve as a resource for students to understand the importance of active engagement during industrial attachment and to prepare effectively for workplace challenges.
1.8 Scope of Study
The study focuses on the impact of SIWES on students after completion of the programme within Lagos State, Nigeria, using students from the University of Lagos and their industrial attachments in selected companies including Chevron Nigeria Limited and Dangote Cement Plc.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
The study was limited by the availability of complete and accurate data from respondents. Some respondents was unwilling to provide detailed feedback, which affected the depth of information collected. Additionally, there was variability in the quality of supervision across industrial sites which influenced students' experiences.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES):
SIWES is a government-mandated programme designed to provide Nigerian tertiary institution students with practical industrial experience in their fields of study (Okojie, 2014).
Industrial Attachment:
The period during which students are placed in industries or organisations to gain practical experience relevant to their academic training (Eze & Chinedu, 2020).
Employability:
The ability of students to secure and maintain employment after graduation, reflecting the practical skills, professional competencies, and workplace readiness developed through SIWES (Ugwu, 2021).
Supervision:
The oversight provided by both academic and industrial mentors to ensure that students perform relevant tasks and acquire necessary skills during SIWES (Adebisi, 2019).
Practical Skills:
Skills acquired by students through direct participation in industrial processes and workplace tasks, which complement theoretical knowledge gained in classrooms (Onasanya & Bello, 2018).
