ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to evaluate the impact of teacher creativity on early childhood development in Akwa South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Investigation revealed that many educators in Akwa South have not received sufficient training in creative teaching techniques, which hampers their ability to effectively incorporate creative approaches into their classrooms. Also, this lack of support can lead to inconsistencies in the implementation of creative teaching practices and limit their impact on early childhood development. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test. The findings of this research study will provide educators insights into effective creative teaching strategies, enhancing their ability to foster better cognitive, emotional, and social outcomes in young children. Additionally, school administrators will use the findings to implement training programs and provide resources that encourage creative teaching methods, creating a more engaging learning environment. Based on the findings, it was recommended that teachers should be provided with regular professional development opportunities focused on innovative and creative teaching strategies. Furthermore, educational authorities should allocate sufficient resources and support to schools to facilitate the adoption of creative teaching practices.

Impact of Teacher’s Creativity on Early Childhood Development

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

Teacher Creativity refers to the ability of educators to employ innovative and imaginative methods in their teaching practices to engage and motivate young learners. This includes the use of interactive activities, play-based learning, and resourceful approaches to address diverse educational needs (Craft, 2005). Early childhood is widely recognized as a critical period in human development, during which foundational cognitive, social, and emotional skills are formed (UNICEF, 2013). The role of teachers in this developmental phase is crucial, as they create the learning environment and provide the experiences that shape children's growth. In particular, the creativity of teachers plays a significant role in enhancing early childhood education, as it helps to engage children in meaningful learning activities that stimulate their curiosity and foster holistic development (Sawyer, 2011).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.

1.2 Background of Study

In Nigeria, including the Akwa South Local Government Area, early childhood education faces several challenges that impact the effectiveness of teaching practices. These challenges include limited resources, insufficient teacher training, and a lack of support for creative teaching methods (Ogunyemi & Lagunju, 2016). Despite these difficulties, there is a growing awareness of the need to improve educational practices to foster better developmental outcomes for children. Teacher creativity is increasingly recognized as a key factor in achieving this goal, as it involves adapting teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students and creating engaging learning environments (Robinson, 2001).

The history of early childhood education and teacher creativity in Akwa South Local Government Area of Anambra State reflects broader trends in educational development within Nigeria. Historically, early childhood education in Nigeria has evolved from rudimentary care models to more structured programs aimed at fostering holistic child development. The introduction of formal early childhood education programs began in the mid-20th century, focusing on providing a foundation for lifelong learning and development (Federal Ministry of Education [FME], 2014).

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, there was a significant shift towards improving the quality of early childhood education in Nigeria. This period saw the implementation of various educational policies designed to enhance the standards of early childhood education and address challenges such as inadequate resources, insufficient teacher training, and the need for innovative teaching methods (Ogunyemi & Lagunju, 2016). These policies emphasized the importance of adopting creative and engaging teaching practices to better support children's development (UNICEF, 2013).

In Akwa South Local Government Area, the implementation of these policies has been influenced by local educational contexts and resource availability. The area has witnessed efforts to integrate creative teaching methods into early childhood education, although these efforts have been met with varying degrees of success due to challenges such as limited access to professional development and inadequate teaching materials (Ezeani, 2014). The historical focus on teacher creativity in Akwa South reflects a broader recognition of its importance in enhancing educational outcomes and fostering a more stimulating learning environment for young children.

According to Craft (2005), teacher creativity involves the use of innovative teaching methods, materials, and approaches that go beyond traditional instruction. These creative practices include play-based learning, storytelling, art activities, and problem-solving exercises, all of which are designed to make learning more engaging and effective for young children (Craft, 2005). In Akwa South Local Government Area of Anambra State, the importance of teacher creativity in early childhood education is particularly relevant, given the need to address diverse educational challenges and optimize learning outcomes for children in this region.

Research has shown that creative teaching practices can significantly enhance various aspects of early childhood development, including cognitive abilities, social skills, and emotional resilience (Robinson, 2001). For instance, children who are exposed to creative learning environments are more likely to develop critical thinking skills, better problem-solving abilities, and a greater capacity for emotional regulation (Craft, 2005). These benefits highlight the importance of fostering creativity in teachers as a means of promoting comprehensive early childhood development. However, despite the recognized importance of creativity in teaching, there are challenges that educators in Akwa South face in implementing creative strategies. These challenges include limited access to resources, inadequate training, and a lack of institutional support for innovative teaching practices (Ogunyemi & Lagunju, 2016).

Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the teacher's creativity on early childhood development in Akwa South Local Government Area of Anambra State

1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that one major issue of this research is the limited access to resources and teaching materials, which constrains teachers' ability to implement innovative and engaging activities. According to Ogunyemi and Lagunju (2016), inadequate resources often lead to a reliance on traditional methods that may not fully engage children or support diverse learning needs.

Another significant problem is the lack of professional development opportunities for teachers. Ezeani (2014) notes that many educators in Akwa South have not received sufficient training in creative teaching techniques, which hampers their ability to effectively incorporate creative approaches into their classrooms. This gap in training results in a disconnect between the potential benefits of creative teaching and the actual practices observed in schools.

Furthermore, there is a challenge related to institutional support and policy implementation. Research by UNICEF (2013) indicates that while policies promoting creativity in education exist, there is often inadequate support for their practical application at the local level. This lack of support can lead to inconsistencies in the implementation of creative teaching practices and limit their impact on early childhood development. Addressing these problems is crucial for enhancing the impact of teacher creativity on early childhood development in Akwa South. By tackling resource limitations, improving professional development, ensuring effective policy implementation, and addressing socio-economic factors, it may be possible to better support teachers in delivering high-quality, creative early childhood education.
