1.1 Introduction
Parasitic infections is a group of diseases caused by organisms such as helminths, protozoa, and ectoparasites that live in or on a host organism and depend on it for survival, often leading to health and nutritional complications. In children, these infections are particularly harmful because they interfere with normal physical growth, weaken immunity, and reduce the body's ability to absorb essential nutrients required for development (World Health Organization, 2023). In the context of Nigeria, parasitic infections remain highly prevalent due to factors such as inadequate sanitation, limited access to clean water, overcrowded living conditions, and low levels of hygiene awareness, especially among school-aged children in rural and peri-urban communities (UNICEF, 2022). Child growth and development refers to the progressive increase in physical size, cognitive ability, emotional stability, and social functioning that occurs from infancy through adolescence (Adejoh & Olorunfemi, 2021).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Parasitic infections remain one of the most persistent public health challenges affecting child development in many developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), parasitic infections are diseases caused by organisms such as helminths, protozoa, and ectoparasites that live in or on a host organism and derive nourishment at the expense of the host, often resulting in nutritional deficiencies, weakened immunity, and impaired physical and cognitive development (World Health Organization, 2023). In many low-income settings, these infections continue to thrive due to poor sanitation, unsafe drinking water, inadequate waste disposal systems, and limited access to healthcare services.
According to UNICEF (2022), parasitic infections remain highly prevalent among children in developing nations, with school-aged children being the most vulnerable group due to their frequent exposure to contaminated soil, water, and food. UNICEF further reported that intestinal parasitic infections contribute significantly to malnutrition and stunted growth among children, especially in rural and densely populated urban communities where hygiene practices are often inadequate. These infections are also linked to reduced school attendance and poor academic performance, thereby affecting both physical and intellectual development (UNICEF, 2022).
Adejoh and Olorunfemi (2021), intestinal parasitic infections are strongly associated with delayed cognitive development and reduced academic achievement among children in sub-Saharan Africa. The authors asserted that repeated exposure to parasites leads to chronic nutrient depletion, iron deficiency anemia, and general weakness, all of which hinder a child's ability to concentrate and perform effectively in school activities. They further affirmed that children living in environments with poor sanitation are more likely to experience recurrent infections, which compounds their developmental challenges over time (Adejoh and Olorunfemi, 2021).
In Nigeria, parasitic infections continue to pose a significant threat to child health outcomes. According to the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH, 2021), soil-transmitted helminths and other intestinal parasites are endemic in many parts of the country, particularly in rural communities where access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities remains limited. The ministry reported that inadequate hygiene practices, open defecation, and lack of regular deworming programs contribute to the high burden of infection among children. These conditions create an environment where parasites are easily transmitted, leading to repeated infections and long-term health consequences.
Akinwale et al. (2020) stated that, parasitic infections significantly affect child growth by interfering with nutrient absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. The authors contended that chronic infections result in malnutrition, growth retardation, and reduced body weight, which are common indicators of poor child health. They further stated that the severity of these effects is often influenced by the intensity of infection and the duration of exposure, meaning that children in highly contaminated environments are more likely to suffer severe developmental setbacks (Akinwale et al., 2020).
WHO (2023) reported that, parasitic infections also have indirect effects on child development through their impact on household income and healthcare expenditure. The organization affirmed that families affected by recurrent infections often spend a significant portion of their income on treatment, thereby reducing resources available for nutrition, education, and other essential needs of the child (WHO, 2023).
This study is set against the backdrop of the persistent burden of parasitic infections on child growth and development in Nigeria, despite ongoing public health interventions aimed at reducing their prevalence.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that parasitic infections remain a persistent public health challenge in many developing countries, particularly in Nigeria where environmental, socioeconomic, and sanitation conditions continue to favor their transmission. These infections, including soil-transmitted helminths and protozoan parasites, are widely recognized as major contributors to poor child health outcomes. They interfere with nutrient absorption, reduce appetite, and contribute to chronic blood loss, all of which directly affect physical growth and cognitive development in children (WHO, 2023).
On the other hand, some children living in similar environments do not exhibit severe developmental challenges, suggesting that factors such as nutrition, immunity, and parental awareness may influence the extent of impact. However, the persistent presence of parasitic infections still poses a significant risk that undermines national efforts toward improving child health indicators and achieving sustainable development goals related to health and education.
Furthermore, the burden of parasitic infections places additional strain on already limited healthcare resources in Nigeria. Healthcare facilities often prioritize acute treatment rather than preventive care, which leads to recurring infections and long-term developmental consequences in children. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the impact of parasitic infections on child growth and development in Nigeria.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to assess the impact of parasitic infections on child growth and development in Nigeria. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To determine the prevalence of parasitic infections among children in Nigeria.
- To examine the relationship between parasitic infections and physical growth in children.
- To assess the effect of parasitic infections on cognitive development and academic performance.
- To identify environmental and socioeconomic factors contributing to parasitic infections.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of existing control measures such as deworming and sanitation programs.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- What is the prevalence of parasitic infections among children in Nigeria?
- How do parasitic infections affect physical growth in children?
- In what ways do parasitic infections influence cognitive development and academic performance?
- What environmental and socioeconomic factors contribute to parasitic infections among children?
- How effective are existing control measures in reducing parasitic infections in Nigeria?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: Parasitic infections do not have a significant impact on child growth and development in Nigeria.
- H1: Parasitic infections have a significant impact on child growth and development in Nigeria.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: There is no significant relationship between parasitic infections and physical growth in children.
- H0: There is a significant relationship between parasitic infections and physical growth in children.
Hypothesis Three
- H0: Parasitic infections do not significantly affect cognitive development and academic performance in children.
- H1: Parasitic infections significantly affect cognitive development and academic performance in children.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide reliable data that will assist health policymakers in developing more effective child health intervention programs in Nigeria. The research will also improve understanding of how parasitic infections affect child growth patterns in both rural and urban communities.
Furthermore, the study will support education authorities in addressing health-related causes of poor academic performance among pupils. It will also strengthen public health awareness campaigns aimed at reducing parasitic infection rates among children.
Lastly, this research will contribute to academic literature on child health and parasitic disease burden in developing countries.
1.8 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study covers selected public primary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria, focusing on parasitic infection prevalence, child growth indicators, and academic performance. The scope excludes private schools and secondary school populations.
However, the study was limited by the inability to access all selected schools due to administrative restrictions and incomplete health records of pupils.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Parasitic Infections:
Parasitic infections are diseases caused by organisms such as helminths and protozoa that live in or on a host and depend on it for survival, often leading to nutritional and health complications in children (World Health Organization, 2023).
Child Growth:
Child growth refers to the measurable increase in physical size such as height and weight, influenced by nutrition, health status, and environmental conditions (UNICEF, 2022).
Child Development:
Child development is the progressive improvement in cognitive, emotional, social, and physical abilities from infancy through adolescence (Adejoh & Olorunfemi, 2021).
Soil-Transmitted Helminths:
These are intestinal worms transmitted through contaminated soil that affect human health, particularly among children in poor sanitation environments (WHO, 2023).
Deworming:
Deworming is a medical intervention involving the administration of drugs to eliminate intestinal parasites from the body, especially in children at risk (Federal Ministry of Health, 2021).
