1.1 Introduction
Environmental sanitation refers to the control and management of environmental factors that may adversely affect human health through proper waste disposal, safe water supply, adequate drainage, personal hygiene, and clean surroundings. According to the World Health Organization, environmental sanitation involves measures aimed at improving environmental conditions to prevent diseases and promote healthy living. Good environmental sanitation is an essential component of public health because it minimizes exposure to disease-causing organisms and reduces the spread of communicable diseases within communities (WHO, 2023). Communicable diseases are illnesses caused by infectious microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi that can be transmitted directly or indirectly from one person to another or through contaminated food, water, air, or vectors. Communicable diseases according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2024) continue to account for a significant proportion of illnesses and deaths worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where environmental sanitation remains inadequate.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Environmental sanitation has remained one of the most important components of public health because it directly influences the health status and well-being of individuals and communities. According to the World Health Organization (2023), environmental sanitation refers to the control of environmental factors that have the potential to affect human health through the provision of safe water, proper disposal of human excreta and solid waste, effective drainage systems, food hygiene, and healthy environmental practices. Adequate environmental sanitation helps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, improve quality of life, and promote sustainable development. However, poor sanitation continues to be a major challenge in many developing countries where rapid urbanization, population growth, inadequate infrastructure, and poor waste management have increased environmental health risks.
Mara, Lane, Scott, and Trouba (2010) articulated that, poor environmental sanitation is closely associated with the transmission of communicable diseases because contaminated environments provide favourable conditions for disease-causing microorganisms to thrive. Improper waste disposal, open defecation, blocked drainage systems, stagnant water, and inadequate access to clean drinking water expose people to pathogens that cause illnesses such as cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, diarrhoea, hepatitis A, and intestinal worm infections.
Similarly, according to Prüss-Ustün et al. (2019), inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene, and unsafe drinking water remain among the leading environmental risk factors responsible for a substantial proportion of preventable diseases worldwide. The researchers reported that improved sanitation facilities, safe waste management, and regular hygiene practices significantly reduce the incidence of waterborne and sanitation-related diseases. Access to sanitation services not only improves health outcomes but also contributes to economic productivity by reducing healthcare expenses and preventing productivity losses resulting from illness.
In the same vein, according to United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF, 2022), millions of people, especially in developing countries, still lack access to improved sanitation facilities and safe water supplies. The organization stated that poor sanitation disproportionately affects children because repeated exposure to contaminated environments increases the likelihood of diarrhoeal diseases, malnutrition, and impaired physical development. The report further affirmed that improved sanitation and hygiene practices are among the most cost-effective public health interventions for preventing communicable diseases and promoting healthy communities. Likewise, according to Curtis and Cairncross (2003), proper handwashing with soap and improved personal hygiene remain effective measures for interrupting the transmission of infectious diseases. The researchers reported that simple hygiene practices significantly reduce the spread of diarrhoeal diseases and respiratory infections. Furthermore, according to Bartram and Cairncross (2010), environmental sanitation contributes to public health by reducing environmental contamination and limiting opportunities for disease transmission. They asserted that investments in sanitation infrastructure generate significant health, social, and economic benefits through reduced disease burden, increased school attendance, improved workplace productivity, and enhanced community well-being. Moreover, according to United Nations (2015), Sustainable Development Goal 6 emphasizes the need to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. The organization affirmed that achieving universal access to sanitation is fundamental to reducing communicable diseases, promoting environmental sustainability, and improving public health outcomes.
This study is set against the backdrop of the persistent challenge of poor environmental sanitation and its influence on the prevalence of communicable diseases, with the aim of providing empirical evidence that will contribute to improved environmental health policies and disease prevention strategies.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that poor environmental sanitation remains a major public health challenge in many developing countries, particularly in communities where refuse is improperly disposed of, drainage systems are blocked, and access to safe water and hygienic toilet facilities is inadequate. On the other hand, despite various environmental sanitation policies and public health campaigns, the burden of these diseases remains high because sanitation practices are often poorly implemented and monitored (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023).
Additionally, the increasing prevalence of communicable diseases has placed considerable pressure on healthcare systems, reduced economic productivity, and negatively affected the quality of life of many households (UNICEF, 2022).
Furthermore, there is still limited awareness and inconsistent compliance with proper environmental sanitation practices among many residents, while weak enforcement of sanitation regulations has continued to undermine disease prevention efforts. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of poor environmental sanitation on the prevalence of communicable diseases.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of poor environmental sanitation on the prevalence of communicable diseases.
The specific objectives of this research are to:
- Examine the impact of poor waste disposal on the prevalence of communicable diseases;
- Determine the effect of inadequate drainage systems on the occurrence of communicable diseases;
- Assess the influence of poor access to safe water on the prevalence of communicable diseases;
- Examine the effect of poor personal and environmental hygiene practices on communicable diseases; and
- Identify measures for improving environmental sanitation to reduce the prevalence of communicable diseases.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The study seeks to answer the following questions:
- What is the impact of poor waste disposal on the prevalence of communicable diseases?
- What effect do inadequate drainage systems have on the occurrence of communicable diseases?
- How does poor access to safe water influence the prevalence of communicable diseases?
- What effect do poor personal and environmental hygiene practices have on communicable diseases?
- What measures can improve environmental sanitation and reduce the prevalence of communicable diseases?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: Poor waste disposal has no significant impact on the prevalence of communicable diseases.
- H1: Poor waste disposal has a significant impact on the prevalence of communicable diseases.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Inadequate drainage systems have no significant effect on the occurrence of communicable diseases.
- H1: Inadequate drainage systems have a significant effect on the occurrence of communicable diseases.
Hypothesis Three
- H0: Poor access to safe water has no significant influence on the prevalence of communicable diseases.
- H1: Poor access to safe water has a significant influence on the prevalence of communicable diseases.
Hypothesis Four
- H0: Poor personal and environmental hygiene practices have no significant effect on communicable diseases.
- H1: Poor personal and environmental hygiene practices have a significant effect on communicable diseases.
Hypothesis Five
- H0: Environmental sanitation improvement measures have no significant effect on reducing the prevalence of communicable diseases.
- H1: Environmental sanitation improvement measures have a significant effect on reducing the prevalence of communicable diseases.
1.7 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will provide reliable information on how poor environmental sanitation contributes to the spread of communicable diseases. Also, the study will support environmental health programmes with evidence for improving sanitation practices and disease prevention.
Furthermore, the research will encourage the adoption of effective sanitation measures that reduce the occurrence of communicable diseases. It will also contribute to public health education by promoting proper hygiene and environmental cleanliness.
Lastly, the result obtained from this research will serve as useful reference material for researchers and students interested in environmental health.
1.8 Scope of Study
This study focuses on the impact of poor environmental sanitation on the prevalence of communicable diseases in Anambra State, Nigeria. The study covers issues relating to waste disposal, drainage systems, access to safe water, environmental hygiene, and the occurrence of communicable diseases among residents.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Environmental Sanitation:
According to the World Health Organization (2023), environmental sanitation refers to measures that promote a clean and healthy environment through proper waste disposal, safe water supply, effective drainage, and hygienic surroundings to prevent disease.
Poor Environmental Sanitation:
Poor environmental sanitation refers to unhealthy environmental conditions resulting from improper waste disposal, blocked drainage, unsafe water, open defecation, and poor hygiene practices that increase the risk of disease transmission.
Communicable Diseases:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2024), communicable diseases are illnesses caused by infectious microorganisms that spread directly or indirectly from one person to another through contaminated water, food, air, surfaces, or disease vectors.
Waste Disposal:
Waste disposal refers to the proper collection, treatment, and disposal of solid and liquid waste to prevent environmental pollution and protect public health.
Environmental Hygiene:
Environmental hygiene refers to practices that maintain clean surroundings through proper sanitation, regular cleaning, and safe handling of waste to reduce disease transmission.
Safe Water:
Safe water is water that is free from harmful microorganisms and contaminants, making it suitable for drinking, cooking, and other domestic uses.
Drainage System:
A drainage system refers to channels or structures designed to remove wastewater and rainwater from the environment to prevent flooding and stagnant water.
Disease Prevalence:
Disease prevalence refers to the total number of existing cases of a particular disease within a specified population during a given period.
