    ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to assess how social media affects communication skills among male and female students in the University of Calabar, focusing on usage extent, writing skills, verbal interaction, and gender differences. The motivation for this research arises from increasing dependence of students on social media, where 72% report high usage, 71% link it to writing changes, 73% note verbal effects, and 75% confirm gender differences in usage patterns. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to 200 undergraduate students selected through stratified random sampling across faculties in the University of Calabar. The findings show that 39% very high and 33% high social media usage were recorded. Also, 71% agree writing skills are affected, 73% agree verbal skills are influenced, while 75% confirm gender differences and 74% report communication challenges. Furthermore, X2results for all hypotheses exceeded 7.815, leading to rejection of all null hypotheses. The outcome of this research shows that social media significantly influences communication skills among students, affecting writing, speech, and interaction patterns, while also showing notable gender differences in usage and communication behaviour among male and female students in the University of Calabar. Based on the result obtained, it was recommended that students should be encouraged to regulate the amount of time they spend on social media in order to reduce excessive exposure that may negatively affect their communication skills.

    1.1 Introduction

Communication is the process through which individuals exchange information, ideas, thoughts, and feelings with one another through verbal, non-verbal, written, or digital means. Communication skills refer to the ability of an individual to express ideas clearly, listen effectively, understand messages, and interact appropriately within social and academic environments. In recent years, the emergence of social media has transformed the pattern of communication across the world, especially among young people and university students. Social media refers to internet-based platforms and applications that allow users to create, share, and exchange content and information instantly through virtual networks (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010). Popular social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, and TikTok are now widely used by students for interaction, learning, entertainment, and information sharing.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.

    1.2 Background of Study

The emergence of social media has brought significant changes to communication patterns across the world, particularly among students in higher institutions. Communication is an important aspect of human existence because it enables individuals to share ideas, express emotions, exchange information, and maintain social relationships. In academic environments, effective communication skills are essential for classroom participation, academic writing, presentations, interpersonal relationships, and overall educational development. The rapid advancement in information and communication technology has introduced new methods of interaction through social networking platforms, thereby changing the traditional ways students communicate with one another. Social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and X have become popular among university students because they provide easy and instant communication opportunities.

According to Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), social media refers to internet-based applications that enable users to create and exchange user-generated content within virtual communities and networks. The increasing accessibility of smartphones, internet services, and digital devices has contributed greatly to the widespread use of social media among young people, especially university students. Students now spend a considerable amount of time communicating through online platforms for academic discussions, entertainment, social interaction, and information sharing. The popularity of social media among students is largely associated with its speed, convenience, affordability, and ability to connect individuals across different geographical locations.

Boyd and Ellison (2007) stated that social networking sites are web-based platforms that allow users to create public or semi-public profiles and interact with other users within a defined system. Through these platforms, students are able to share messages, pictures, videos, opinions, and educational materials with friends and classmates. Social media has therefore become an important tool for communication in educational institutions. Many students rely on social media to maintain relationships, discuss assignments, exchange academic information, and participate in group discussions. The introduction of social media into students' daily lives has undoubtedly transformed communication processes within universities.

Olowu and Seri (2012) reported that social networking addiction among youths contributes to poor communication habits and reduced academic concentration. Many students now prefer online interaction to face-to-face communication, thereby reducing opportunities for direct interpersonal communication and public speaking development. Frequent exposure to informal communication styles on social media also influences students' grammar, spelling, sentence construction, and vocabulary usage. As students become more accustomed to informal digital communication, they sometimes find it difficult to maintain professionalism and correctness in academic writing and classroom discussions (Olowu and Seri, 2012).

Rosen, Carrier, and Cheever (2013) asserted that continuous engagement with social media platforms contributes to distraction and divided attention among students during academic activities. Social media notifications, chats, and online conversations often interrupt students' concentration and reduce meaningful communication during lectures and study periods. In addition, many students now devote more attention to virtual interactions than real-life conversations.

The influence of social media on communication skills appears to differ between male and female students because of variations in communication behavior and social media usage patterns. Female students are often more involved in relationship-oriented communication and social interactions on digital platforms, while male students are more likely to engage in entertainment, sports discussions, and media-related activities online. According to Pempek, Yermolayeva, and Calvert (2009), students spend several hours daily on social networking sites primarily for communication and interaction purposes. The amount of time devoted to social media usage among students has therefore become an issue of concern because of its possible effects on communication development and academic performance. This study is set against the backdrop of increasing social media usage and its perceived influence on the communication skills of male and female students in the University of Calabar.

    1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that male and female students appear to use social media differently based on interests, communication styles, and online engagement patterns. Female students are often observed to spend more time on social networking and interpersonal interactions online, while male students are more involved in entertainment and media-related activities on social platforms. Additionally, many students prefer online communication to direct interpersonal interaction. The excessive use of social media by students is also contributing to divided attention among students, thereby affecting meaningful communication and academic engagement.

Furthermore, the increasing exposure to social media content is influencing students' vocabulary, writing patterns, and communication behavior. Some students find it difficult to distinguish between informal online communication and formal academic writing. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of social media on communication skills among male and female students.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to examine the impact of social media on communication skills among male and female students in the University of Calabar.
