1.1 Introduction
Social media refers to internet-based platforms that allow people to communicate, share information, create content, and interact with others. Platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X have become common means of communication among young people. Social media communication is often fast and informal, leading users to employ abbreviations, slang, shortened words, emojis, unconventional spellings, and other forms of digital expressions. Language plays an important role in education because students need it to communicate ideas, understand lessons, complete assignments, and demonstrate knowledge. Formal writing requires the proper use of grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, vocabulary, and appropriate expressions. For secondary school students, good writing skills are important for success in examinations and further education (Fatimayin, 2018).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Social media has become an important part of everyday communication, particularly among young people. It refers to digital platforms that allow users to create, share, and exchange information, ideas, messages, pictures, and videos. Platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X have changed the way people communicate because messages can be sent quickly and in an informal manner. As cited by Crystal (2011), digital communication has created new patterns of language use in which people often adapt words, spellings, expressions, and sentence structures to suit the speed and style of online interaction. This development has become relevant to education because students who frequently communicate through social media are also expected to use formal language in classrooms, assignments, tests, examinations, and other academic activities.
Language is central to teaching and learning because students depend on it to understand instructions, express ideas, answer questions, and communicate knowledge. Formal writing requires students to observe accepted rules of grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, sentence construction, coherence, and organisation. According to Hyland (2009), academic writing requires clarity, accuracy, logical organisation, and appropriate language choices. Similarly, students at the secondary school level are expected to develop writing abilities that will prepare them for higher education, employment, and other formal communication situations.
The rapid growth of social media has, however, introduced a different style of language use. Online communication often encourages users to write quickly and economically through abbreviations, shortened words, slang, emojis, unconventional spellings, acronyms, and omission of punctuation. Thurlow and Mroczek (2011) stated that digital communication has produced distinctive language practices that reflect the informal nature of communication in online environments. Furthermore, students may become familiar with these patterns because they communicate with friends and classmates through social media on a regular basis. When such habits are transferred into formal school writing, they may affect students' ability to maintain the language standards expected in academic work.
The relationship between social media language and students' writing skills has attracted attention among researchers. According to Fatimayin (2018), social media language has gradually entered the written English of Nigerian secondary school students. Her study identified the use of misspelled words, slang, abbreviations, and other forms of text language in students' writing. Similarly, the study observed that informal expressions used on platforms such as Facebook, SMS, and WhatsApp could appear in students' school essays.
The issue is particularly important at the secondary school level because students are still developing their command of formal English. At this stage, learners are expected to improve their ability to construct grammatically correct sentences, spell words accurately, use appropriate vocabulary, organise paragraphs, and present ideas logically. According to Fatimayin (2018), common social media practices such as abbreviations, slang, shortened expressions, and non-standard spellings may conflict with the conventions expected in school writing. When students become accustomed to writing words in shortened forms online, they may find it difficult to consistently apply complete and correct forms in formal academic situations.
This study is set against the backdrop of the increasing use of social media among students and the need to ensure that informal digital communication does not undermine the development of effective formal writing skills.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that social media has changed the way many students communicate, especially through the use of short forms, slang, abbreviations, emojis, and informal expressions. While these forms of communication are useful for quick interaction, frequent use may affect students' ability to distinguish between informal online language and the formal language required in school writing. On the other hand, some students may carry these informal expressions into assignments, examinations, and other academic work.
Additionally, students in secondary schools are expected to use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and appropriate vocabulary in formal writing. However, regular exposure to social media language may encourage careless spelling, shortened words, poor sentence construction, and excessive use of slang.
Furthermore, this problem may make it difficult for some students to express their ideas clearly and correctly in formal academic situations. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the impact of social media language on students' formal writing skills in secondary schools in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to examine the impact of social media language on students' formal writing skills in secondary schools in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- Examine the common forms of social media language used by secondary school students in Aba North Local Government Area;
- Determine the effect of social media abbreviations and shortened words on students' formal writing skills;
- Examine the influence of social media slang and informal expressions on students' formal writing;
- Determine the effect of social media language on students' spelling, grammar, and punctuation in formal writing; and
- Examine the measures used by schools and teachers to help students maintain proper formal writing skills.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- What are the common forms of social media language used by secondary school students in Aba North Local Government Area?
- What effect do social media abbreviations and shortened words have on students' formal writing skills?
- How does social media slang and informal expressions influence students' formal writing?
- What effect does social media language have on students' spelling, grammar, and punctuation in formal writing?
- What measures are used by schools and teachers to help students maintain proper formal writing skills?
1.6 Research Hypotheses

1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide clear information on how social media language affects students' formal writing. The study will also help teachers identify common social media-related errors and address them during writing lessons.
Furthermore, English language teachers will have information that will help them identify and correct common social media-related writing errors among students. It will also provide information useful for developing school-based guidance on social media use and formal writing.
Lastly, the study will provide information that will support decisions on language education, digital literacy, and students' formal writing development.
