1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
Immunization has a long history of protecting individuals from infectious diseases, dating back to the development of the first vaccine by Edward Jenner in 1796, which successfully prevented smallpox (Plotkin, 2014). Since then, vaccines have played a crucial role in the eradication, elimination, and control of many life-threatening childhood diseases, significantly reducing mortality rates worldwide (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). The introduction of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) by the WHO in 1974 further strengthened global vaccination efforts, ensuring that children, especially in developing countries, had access to life-saving vaccines (UNICEF, 2022).
Historically, childhood diseases such as measles, polio, and diphtheria were prevalent in Igbede due to low immunization uptake. Reports from the local health centers indicate that before the introduction of targeted immunization programs, outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases were common, leading to high infant and child mortality rates (Adebayo et al., 2021). However, with increased awareness and government intervention, there has been a gradual improvement in vaccination rates, contributing to a reduction in disease outbreaks. Despite these achievements, challenges such as limited access to vaccines, and misinformation about immunization continue to affect vaccine acceptance in the community (WHO, 2021).
Immunization has been widely recognized as one of the most effective public health strategies for preventing and controlling childhood diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021), immunization prevents an estimated 4 to 5 million deaths annually by protecting children against diseases such as measles, diphtheria, pertussis, and polio. Childhood immunization is particularly essential in low-income and rural communities where access to healthcare is limited, and disease outbreaks are more prevalent (UNICEF, 2022).
In Nigeria, childhood diseases remain a significant cause of mortality and morbidity despite global and national immunization programs. The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA, 2020) reports that vaccine-preventable diseases account for approximately 30% of under-five deaths in the country. While the Nigerian government has implemented various immunization initiatives, including the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), challenges such as vaccine hesitancy, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and limited awareness still hinder full coverage, particularly in rural areas like the Igbede community (Okafor & Adeyemi, 2020).
The Igbede community, like many rural settlements in Nigeria, faces significant obstacles to effective immunization coverage. Socioeconomic factors, cultural beliefs, and misconceptions about vaccines contribute to vaccine hesitancy, while inadequate healthcare facilities and poor logistics disrupt immunization schedules (Adebayo et al., 2021). Furthermore, limited government funding and poor transportation networks make it difficult for healthcare workers to reach remote areas, leading to gaps in immunization coverage (Eze & Chukwu, 2019).
According to WHO (2020), immunization is the process by which individuals are protected from infectious diseases through the administration of vaccines, stimulating the immune system to develop resistance against specific pathogens (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020). It is one of the most effective and cost-efficient public health interventions for preventing and controlling childhood diseases, significantly reducing morbidity and mortality rates among children (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021).
In many developing communities, including Igbede, childhood diseases such as measles, polio, tuberculosis, and diphtheria pose significant health risks, often leading to severe complications or death if left untreated. Immunization programs have played a crucial role in reducing the prevalence of these diseases by ensuring that children receive the necessary vaccines at the appropriate ages (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund [UNICEF], 2022). Despite global and national efforts to promote vaccination, some communities still experience low immunization coverage due to factors such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, vaccine hesitancy, misinformation, and socio-economic barriers (Okafor & Adeyemi, 2020). The Igbede community, like many rural areas, faces challenges in ensuring that all children receive the necessary immunizations. Factors such as poor access to healthcare facilities, cultural beliefs, and a lack of awareness about the benefits of vaccination contribute to gaps in immunization coverage. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the importance of immunization in preventing and controlling childhood diseases in Igbede, assessing the level of awareness, accessibility, and challenges faced in achieving optimal immunization coverage.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the issue of childhood diseases remains a significant public health concern in Igbede Community, despite the availability of vaccines designed to prevent them. Immunization is one of the most effective and cost-efficient interventions in reducing childhood morbidity and mortality, yet vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, polio, and whooping cough continue to affect children in the community (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021).
One major challenge is vaccine hesitancy, which is fueled by misinformation, cultural beliefs, and fear of adverse effects. Some parents in Igbede believe that vaccines cause infertility or other long-term health problems, leading them to refuse or delay immunization for their children (Adebayo et al., 2021). Inadequate awareness campaigns and limited health education further contribute to these misconceptions, making it difficult to achieve full immunization coverage.
Another issue is the inadequate healthcare infrastructure and logistical challenges affecting vaccine distribution. Many health centers in Igbede lack proper storage facilities, trained personnel, and consistent vaccine supplies, which disrupt immunization schedules and reduce accessibility for parents (Okafor & Adeyemi, 2020). Poor road networks and transportation difficulties also make it hard for healthcare workers to reach remote areas, leading to gaps in vaccine administration.
Furthermore, financial constraints and poverty are additional barriers to immunization in the community. Although vaccines are provided for free in government health centers, indirect costs such as transportation to healthcare facilities and lost wages discourage some parents from taking their children for vaccination (Eze & Chukwu, 2019). It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to address these problems by exploring the importance of immunization in the prevention and control of childhood diseases.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine the importance of immunization in the prevention and control of childhood diseases in Igbede Community. The objectives of the study include:
- To assess the level of awareness and knowledge of immunization among parents and caregivers in Igbede Community.
- To examine the availability and accessibility of immunization services in the community.
- To evaluate the impact of immunization on the prevalence and control of childhood diseases in Igbede.
- To identify the challenges affecting immunization coverage and uptake in the community.
- To provide recommendations for improving immunization programs and increasing vaccine acceptance in Igbede Community.
1.4 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, this study seeks to answer the following research questions:
- What is the level of awareness and knowledge of immunization among parents and caregivers in Igbede Community?
- How available and accessible are immunization services in the community?
- What impact does immunization have on the prevalence and control of childhood diseases in Igbede?
- What are the challenges affecting immunization coverage and uptake in the community?
- What strategies can be implemented to improve immunization programs and increase vaccine acceptance in Igbede Community?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Based on the stated objectives, the research study formulates the following hypotheses:
Hypothesis One
- H0: Immunization has no significant impact on the prevention and control of childhood diseases in Igbede Community
- H1: Immunization has significant impact on the prevention and control of childhood diseases in Igbede Community
Hypothesis Two
- H0: The availability and accessibility of immunization services do not significantly influence vaccine uptake in the community
- H1: The availability and accessibility of immunization services significantly influence vaccine uptake in the community
1.6 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will help healthcare providers and policymakers design more effective immunization programs tailored to the specific needs of the community. It will also serve as a reference for public health officials in developing strategies to improve vaccine accessibility and distribution.
Additionally, parents and caregivers will benefit from this study as it will enhance their knowledge of immunization and address common misconceptions that discourage vaccine uptake. Increased awareness will lead to improved health-seeking behavior, ensuring that more children receive timely and complete vaccinations.
This study will also be useful to researchers and academicians by adding to the existing body of knowledge on immunization and childhood disease prevention. The data gathered will support further studies and provide evidence for policy recommendations.
Lastly, the study will contribute to reducing childhood morbidity and mortality in Igbede Community by promoting effective immunization practices and encouraging community participation in disease prevention efforts.
1.7 Scope of Study
This study focuses on the importance of immunization in the prevention and control of childhood diseases in Igbede Community, located in Lagos State, Nigeria. The research is limited to primary healthcare centers and immunization outreach programs within Igbede, with specific attention to the role of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board in immunization delivery.
It also considers the involvement of international health organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in supporting vaccination efforts.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
This research study was limited by several factors that affected data collection and analysis.
- One of the major constraints was insufficient data due to incomplete immunization records and lack of proper documentation in some healthcare centers.
- Delay from respondents was also a significant challenge, as some parents and caregivers were reluctant to provide information due to concerns about privacy or lack of awareness about the importance of the research.
- Time constraints further impacted the study, as the research was conducted within a specific timeframe that did not allow for extensive follow-ups with respondents.
- Financial constraints were a limitation, as the study required resources for transportation, printing of questionnaires, and logistical support for field visits. Limited funding restricted the scope of the study and the number of participants that could be reached.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Immunization:
Immunization is the process of making a person resistant to infectious diseases, typically through the administration of vaccines (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). It is one of the most effective public health measures for preventing childhood diseases and reducing mortality rates.
Vaccination:
Vaccination refers to the act of administering a vaccine to stimulate the body's immune system to develop protection against a specific disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020). It helps in building long-term immunity and preventing the spread of infections among children.
Childhood Diseases:
Childhood diseases are illnesses that commonly affect children, especially those under the age of five, and are often preventable through immunization. These include measles, polio, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and whooping cough (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund [UNICEF], 2022).
Prevention and Control:
Prevention refers to proactive measures taken to stop the occurrence of diseases, while control involves strategies to reduce the impact and spread of illnesses (GAVI, 2021). Immunization plays a key role in both preventing infections and controlling outbreaks in communities.
Community Health:
Community health is the well-being of a group of people living in a specific area, influenced by factors such as healthcare access, sanitation, and disease prevention efforts (WHO, 2021). In Igbede Community, immunization programs contribute significantly to improving overall community health by protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases.
