1.1 Introduction
Blood pressure is defined as the force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels, particularly the arteries, during the cardiac cycle, and it is expressed in terms of systolic and diastolic pressures (World Health Organization, 2019). Maintaining normal blood pressure is essential for cardiovascular health, as elevated levels, known as hypertension, is instead of being a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure (Olubunmi & Oladipo, 2020). Blood pressure status is influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, with dietary intake emerging as a critical determinant (Adeyemi et al., 2021).
Dietary intake patterns refer to the habitual consumption of food and beverages, including the type, quantity, frequency, and timing of meals. Healthy dietary patterns, such as those rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, is instead of promoting optimal blood pressure control, while diets high in salt, sugar, and saturated fats is instead of contributing to elevated blood pressure levels (Eze et al., 2020). Among women engaged in market and business activities, irregular meal patterns, dependence on fast foods, and limited consumption of nutrient-dense foods are common, largely due to demanding work schedules, accessibility of street foods, and economic considerations (Chukwu et al., 2018).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Blood pressure is a key indicator of cardiovascular health, representing the force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of arteries during the cardiac cycle. According to the World Health Organization (2019), normal blood pressure is essential for the proper functioning of the heart and other organs, while elevated blood pressure, known as hypertension, is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Hypertension is increasingly recognized as a public health concern worldwide, affecting both developed and developing countries, with urban populations exhibiting higher prevalence due to lifestyle changes, dietary habits, and stress (Olubunmi & Oladipo, 2020).
Dietary intake is one of the most significant lifestyle factors influencing blood pressure. Dietary intake patterns refer to the habitual selection, consumption, and combination of foods and beverages in daily life. Adeyemi, Akintola, and Bello (2021) reported that diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat proteins contribute to the maintenance of healthy blood pressure, while high intake of sodium, sugar, and saturated fats is associated with elevated blood pressure and increased risk of cardiovascular complications. They further contended that urban women, particularly those engaged in market and business activities, are more likely to adopt unhealthy dietary patterns due to time constraints, economic limitations, and accessibility of processed foods (Adeyemi, Akintola, and Bello, 2021).
According to Eze, Onwuekwe, and Uzochukwu (2020), the prevalence of hypertension among women in urban centers is closely linked to their dietary habits. The authors affirmed that many women rely heavily on fast foods, processed snacks, and sugary beverages, which are convenient but nutrient-poor. On the other hand, traditional diets that emphasize fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are often neglected. This shift in dietary patterns, combined with irregular meal schedules common among working women, is reported to exacerbate the risk of developing hypertension.
Chukwu, Okeke, and Nwosu (2018) stated that women who engage in long hours of market or business activities frequently skip meals or consume snacks as substitutes for balanced meals. Such irregular dietary practices are said to disrupt normal metabolic processes and blood pressure regulation. They further asserted that while some women adopt intermittent fasting or selective dieting as a strategy for weight control, these practices may inadvertently contribute to nutrient deficiencies and increased vulnerability to hypertension.
Okafor, Nwankwo, and Emeka (2019) reported that lifestyle factors, including physical inactivity, stress, and dietary intake patterns, collectively influence blood pressure among urban women. They contended that market and business women in densely populated areas, such as Obio-Akpor, are exposed to multiple stressors, including long working hours, crowded working environments, and economic pressures. The authors further affirmed that nutrition awareness is often low, and many women are not adequately informed about the relationship between diet and cardiovascular health.
According to Olubunmi and Oladipo (2020), hypertension is increasingly prevalent among women aged 25 to 55 years in urban Nigerian communities. They reported that dietary intake is a modifiable risk factor that has the potential to significantly reduce blood pressure if appropriately addressed. The authors contended that a detailed understanding of the dietary patterns of women engaged in market and business activities is essential for developing targeted interventions.
Dietary patterns are influenced by multiple factors, including culture, socioeconomic status, education, and access to healthy foods. According to Adeyemi et al. (2021), cultural preferences often determine the types of foods consumed, while economic constraints limit the ability to choose nutrient-rich options. They affirmed that women in urban marketplaces frequently prioritize affordability and convenience over nutritional quality, which is reported to exacerbate health risks. Eze et al. (2020) also stated that nutrition education and awareness campaigns have limited reach in urban communities, and interventions are often not tailored to the unique needs of working women.
This study is set against the backdrop of these growing concerns, aiming to provide empirical evidence on how dietary patterns influence blood pressure among women in urban market and business settings, thereby informing public health initiatives and nutrition education programs tailored to this population.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the consumption of energy-dense and nutrient-poor foods is often exacerbated by long working hours, irregular eating schedules, and limited access to nutrition education, resulting in elevated blood pressure and an increased risk of cardiovascular complications (Adeyemi et al., 2021). On the other hand, some women engage in intermittent fasting or restrictive diets aimed at weight control, which may unintentionally contribute to nutrient imbalances that influence blood pressure regulation (Chukwu et al., 2018).
Studies show that while dietary modifications have the potential to manage hypertension, inconsistent dietary habits and poor food choices among working women in urban centers, such as Obio-Akpor, is instead of promoting optimal cardiovascular health (Eze et al., 2020). Furthermore, cultural preferences, economic constraints, and limited awareness about healthy eating practices often determine food selection, highlighting a significant gap between knowledge and practice. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the influence of dietary intake patterns on blood pressure status among market and business women.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to assess the relationship between dietary intake patterns and blood pressure status among market and business women in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The specific objectives of this study are:
- To determine the common dietary intake patterns among market and business women in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
- To assess the prevalence of hypertension among market and business women in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
- To examine the relationship between specific dietary behaviors (such as high salt, sugar, and fat intake) and blood pressure levels.
- To evaluate the knowledge and awareness of healthy dietary practices among market and business women.
- To provide recommendations for improving dietary intake patterns to support blood pressure control among women in the study area.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the following research questions are formulated:
- What are the common dietary intake patterns among market and business women in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area?
- What is the prevalence of hypertension among market and business women in the study area?
- How do specific dietary behaviors, such as high intake of salt, sugar, and fat, relate to blood pressure levels?
- What is the level of knowledge and awareness of healthy dietary practices among market and business women?
- What interventions or recommendations will improve dietary intake patterns and support blood pressure control?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis 1
- Null (H0): There is no significant relationship between dietary intake patterns and blood pressure status among market and business women in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
- Alternate (H1): There is a significant relationship between dietary intake patterns and blood pressure status among market and business women in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
Hypothesis 2
- Null (H0): High intake of salt, sugar, and fat does not significantly affect blood pressure levels among market and business women in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
- Alternate (H1): High intake of salt, sugar, and fat significantly affects blood pressure levels among market and business women in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
Hypothesis 3
- Null (H0): Awareness of healthy dietary practices has no significant influence on blood pressure status among market and business women.
- Alternate (H1): Awareness of healthy dietary practices has a significant influence on blood pressure status among market and business women.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will help health practitioners design targeted interventions for hypertension prevention. Also, the study will inform nutrition education programs aimed at improving dietary choices.
Furthermore, the research will guide policymakers in implementing strategies to increase access to healthy foods. In addition, health practitioners will use the findings to provide practical dietary advice to women at risk of hypertension.
Lastly, the study will contribute to the scientific literature on diet-related cardiovascular risks among urban Nigerian women.
1.8 Scope of Study
This study focuses on the influence of dietary intake patterns on blood pressure status among market and business women, using Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State as a case study.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Blood Pressure: The force of circulating blood on the walls of arteries measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Normal blood pressure is essential for cardiovascular health (World Health Organization, 2019).
Dietary Intake Patterns: The habitual consumption of foods and beverages, including type, frequency, quantity, and timing of meals, which is reported to influence blood pressure (Adeyemi, Akintola, & Bello, 2021).
Hypertension: A condition characterized by consistently elevated blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg, which is stated to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases (Olubunmi & Oladipo, 2020).
Market and Business Women: Women who engage in trade, small-scale entrepreneurship, and commercial activities within urban markets, whose lifestyle and dietary habits is instead of influencing their health outcomes (Eze, Onwuekwe, & Uzochukwu, 2020).
Nutrient-Poor Foods: Foods low in essential vitamins and minerals but high in calories, sugar, salt, or fats, which is reported to increase the risk of hypertension (Chukwu, Okeke, & Nwosu, 2018).
Nutrition Awareness: Knowledge and understanding of healthy dietary practices, including the impact of specific foods on blood pressure and overall cardiovascular health (Okafor, Nwankwo, & Emeka, 2019).
