1.1 Introduction
Mobile health applications refer to software programs designed for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets that support health services, health information delivery, self-monitoring, and behavior change interventions aimed at improving individual health outcomes (World Health Organization, 2021). These applications include features such as fitness tracking, dietary monitoring, medication reminders, mental health support, and access to health education materials, making them increasingly relevant in modern health communication systems.
In recent years, mobile health applications have become widely adopted among adolescents due to increased smartphone ownership and internet accessibility. Senior secondary school students, particularly in urban areas like Yaba, Lagos State, are increasingly exposed to digital health platforms that influence their awareness, attitudes, and practices regarding personal health. Research indicates that digital health tools is capable of improving health knowledge and encouraging positive behavioral changes when consistently used (Free et al., 2013).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
The development of mobile health applications is rooted in the broader evolution of electronic health (eHealth), which began gaining global attention in the late 20th century with the integration of information and communication technologies into healthcare delivery systems. According to the World Health Organization (2011), eHealth refers to the use of digital tools and information systems to support health services and health-related activities, including education, monitoring, and patient engagement. This foundation later expanded into mobile health (mHealth), which focuses specifically on the use of mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and wireless technologies to deliver health services and information.
According to World Health Organization, mobile health applications refer to software programs designed for smartphones and other mobile devices that support health-related services such as health education, self-monitoring, appointment reminders, fitness tracking, and behavioral guidance aimed at improving individual health outcomes (World Health Organization, 2021).
Mobile health technologies according to Free et al. (2013) reported that they have the potential to improve health service delivery and enhance individual health behavior through timely information dissemination and interactive engagement. They further asserted that mobile platforms can bridge gaps in healthcare access by providing users with continuous support outside traditional clinical environments.
Payne et al. (2015) asserted that, mobile health applications is stated that they are not only tools for information sharing but also behavioral intervention systems that can influence lifestyle choices such as physical activity, nutrition, medication adherence, and mental health management. They affirmed that the effectiveness of these applications depends on user engagement, usability, and the credibility of the health content provided (Payne et al., 2015).
According to the World Health Organization (2021), digital health interventions including mobile health applications is contended that they play a critical role in strengthening health systems and promoting healthier populations by enabling self-care and informed decision-making. The organization emphasized that adolescents and young adults are key beneficiaries of such technologies due to their high exposure to digital environments and willingness to adopt new technologies.
In the context of education and adolescent development, health behavior is influenced by multiple factors including knowledge, environment, peer influence, and access to health resources. Senior secondary school students are at a developmental stage where they are forming long-term habits related to diet, physical activity, mental health, and general wellness. According to Hamine et al. (2015), mobile health interventions is reported that they can support behavior change by providing continuous feedback and personalized health recommendations, although sustained impact remains a challenge in many cases (Hamine et al., 2015).
According to Kay et al. (2011), adolescents who use mobile health applications is stated that they tend to show improved awareness of health issues, particularly when the applications are interactive and tailored to their needs. However, they also noted that engagement levels often decline over time due to lack of motivation, poor content relevance, or inadequate integration into daily routines.
In Nigeria, and particularly in urban centers such as Lagos State, smartphone penetration has increased significantly among secondary school students. According to Pew Research Center (2018), digital access among young people is contended that it has reshaped how they obtain information, including health-related content. According to Adedeji et al. (2020), students in urban secondary schools in Lagos is reported that they increasingly rely on mobile devices for both academic and personal purposes, including health inquiries. They affirmed that while this trend enhances access to information, it does not automatically translate into improved health behavior unless the information is accurate, well-understood, and properly applied. This study is set against the backdrop of increasing digital health adoption among adolescents, the growing use of mobile applications for health-related purposes.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the increasing penetration of mobile health applications among adolescents has introduced new dimensions to health communication and behavior modification, particularly among senior secondary school students in urban settings such as Yaba, Lagos State (World Health Organization, 2021). In many cases, students are exposed to mobile health applications without adequate guidance on their appropriate use, leading to inconsistent engagement with credible health information.
Furthermore, mobile health applications is increasingly being recognized as a potentially powerful tool for promoting positive health behavior when properly utilized, as they is capable of delivering personalized feedback and continuous health support outside traditional clinical or classroom settings (Payne et al., 2015). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the influence of mobile health applications on health behavior of senior secondary school students in Yaba, Lagos State.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to assess the influence of mobile health applications on health behavior of senior secondary school students in Yaba, Lagos State. The specific objectives of the study are to:
- Examine the level of awareness of mobile health applications among senior secondary school students in Yaba, Lagos State.
- Identify the types of mobile health applications used by senior secondary school students.
- Determine the extent of usage of mobile health applications among students.
- Assess the influence of mobile health applications on students' physical health behavior.
- Evaluate the influence of mobile health applications on students' mental and lifestyle health behavior.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- What is the level of awareness of mobile health applications among senior secondary school students in Yaba, Lagos State?
- What types of mobile health applications are used by senior secondary school students?
- What is the extent of usage of mobile health applications among students?
- How do mobile health applications influence students' physical health behavior?
- How do mobile health applications influence students' mental and lifestyle health behavior?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: There is no significant influence of mobile health applications on the health behavior of senior secondary school students in Yaba, Lagos State.
- H1: There is a significant influence of mobile health applications on the health behavior of senior secondary school students in Yaba, Lagos State.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: There is no significant relationship between mobile health application usage and physical health behavior of students.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between mobile health application usage and physical health behavior of students.
Hypothesis Three
- H0: There is no significant relationship between mobile health applications and mental health behavior of students.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between mobile health applications and mental health behavior of students.
Hypothesis Four
- H0: There is no significant relationship between awareness of mobile health applications and usage among students.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between awareness of mobile health applications and usage among students.
Hypothesis Five
- H0: There is no significant relationship between mobile health applications and lifestyle health behavior of students.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between mobile health applications and lifestyle health behavior of students.
1.7 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will assist teachers and school administrators in identifying how mobile health applications affect students' lifestyle choices, thereby supporting the development of more effective school-based health education strategies.
Furthermore, the study will guide health policymakers in designing interventions that integrate mobile health technologies into adolescent health promotion programs, especially within urban school environments.
Lastly, the outcome of this research will contribute to academic literature by providing localized data on the relationship between mobile health applications and adolescent health behavior in Lagos State.
1.8 Scope of Study
The study focuses on mobile health applications and their influence on health behavior among senior secondary school students in Yaba, Lagos State, Nigeria. It does not cover students in tertiary institutions or other states in Nigeria.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Mobile Health Applications:
Mobile health applications are software programs designed for mobile devices that provide health services, information, and monitoring tools to support healthy behavior (World Health Organization, 2021). They are used to improve access to health education and promote self-care among users.
Health Behavior:
Health behavior refers to actions individuals take that affect their health, including diet, physical activity, and mental health practices (Glanz, Rimer, & Viswanath, 2015). It reflects lifestyle choices that influence overall well-being.
Senior Secondary School Students:
Senior secondary school students are learners typically between the ages of 15 and 18 who are in the final stage of secondary education in Nigeria (Federal Ministry of Education, 2014). They are considered adolescents undergoing physical and psychological development.
