1.1 Introduction
Nursery education is the early stage of formal education designed for young children before they enter primary school, where they are introduced to basic knowledge, social skills, communication abilities, and learning habits. English Language is a major subject in primary schools because it is used as a medium of instruction and communication in many educational systems. Early exposure to English through nursery education helps children develop confidence in speaking, writing, reading, and understanding the language. According to National Association for the Education of Young Children (2020), effective early childhood programmes support children's language and literacy development, which contributes to improved academic performance in later years.
The quality of nursery education received by children may influence their readiness and achievement when they begin primary education. Children who participate in effective nursery programmes often have better opportunities to develop communication skills, classroom behaviour, and learning abilities.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Nursery education has a long history that is connected with the development of early childhood learning systems around the world. The idea of organized education for young children began as a way of providing care, guidance, and early learning experiences before formal schooling. Nursery education gained more recognition in Nigeria as educators and policymakers identified the importance of preparing children for formal learning. The inclusion of early childhood education in educational policies encouraged the establishment of nursery schools in both public and private institutions. According to the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2013), early childhood education is an important part of the national education system because it provides children with basic skills needed for successful participation in primary education.
Nursery education is the foundation of a child's early learning experience, providing opportunities for the development of language, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities before entering primary school. It introduces children to basic educational activities that prepare them for formal schooling and help them develop essential skills required for future academic success. English Language occupies a significant position in primary education because it serves as a medium of instruction and a tool for communication in many schools. The ability of pupils to read, write, speak, and understand English influences their performance in other subjects because most learning materials and classroom activities are presented in the language.
Nursery education contributes significantly to children's literacy development by exposing them to early reading skills, vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, and listening abilities. According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (2015), quality early childhood education improves children's readiness for school and creates a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Similarly, early exposure to language-rich environments helps children develop the ability to express themselves and participate actively in classroom activities. When pupils receive adequate preparation at the nursery level, they are more likely to adapt easily to primary school learning processes and demonstrate better achievement in English Language.
UNICEF (2019) affirmed that children who participate in quality early childhood programmes are more likely to develop strong cognitive and communication abilities needed for success in primary education. Likewise, parental involvement and community support contribute to the effectiveness of nursery education because children's learning continues beyond the classroom environment. Parents who encourage reading, speaking, and learning activities at home provide additional opportunities for children to improve their language abilities. However, despite the importance of nursery education, some primary schools continue to experience differences in pupils' achievement in English Language. Some pupils begin primary education with limited vocabulary, poor reading ability, and difficulty expressing themselves because they did not receive adequate early education experiences. According to Ellen Galinsky (2010), children's early learning experiences have long-term effects on their academic development and ability to succeed in formal education.
The importance of nursery education in shaping pupils' academic performance has continued to attract attention among educators, policymakers, and researchers because early educational experiences form the basis for future learning achievement. Along the same line, effective nursery education provides children with the confidence, communication skills, and literacy foundation required for successful participation in primary school activities. This study is set against the backdrop of the need to examine how nursery education influences pupils' achievement in English Language in primary schools and to determine the extent to which early educational experiences contribute to improved language learning outcomes.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that many primary school pupils experience difficulties in learning English Language due to weak foundational skills acquired during their early years of education. Nursery education provides children with basic language exposure, communication skills, vocabulary development, and early literacy experiences that support later academic achievement. On the other hand, some primary schools still admit pupils with limited nursery education background, which affects their ability to understand lessons and perform well in English Language.
Furthermore, some parents and communities do not fully understand the importance of nursery education, leading to low participation and reduced opportunities for children to develop essential language skills before entering primary school. Additionally, differences in pupils' English Language achievement may be linked to the type and quality of nursery education received before primary school admission. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the influence of nursery education on pupils' achievement in English Language in primary schools.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study was to examine the influence of nursery education on pupils' achievement in English Language in primary schools.
The specific objectives of this study were to:
- Examine the influence of nursery education exposure on pupils' achievement in English Language in primary schools.
- Determine the effect of teaching methods used in nursery schools on pupils' English Language performance.
- Assess the influence of instructional materials used in nursery education on pupils' achievement in English Language.
- Examine the relationship between nursery teachers' competence and pupils' English Language achievement.
- Determine the influence of parental involvement in nursery education on pupils' performance in English Language.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

1.7 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will provide teachers with information on the importance of effective nursery education practices in developing pupils' English Language skills. The study will also help parents recognize the importance of enrolling children in nursery schools and supporting their early learning activities.
Furthermore, the research will provide useful information for improving nursery school facilities, teaching materials, and teacher support. It will also assist school administrators in improving nursery education through better teaching methods and learning resources.
Lastly, the study will serve as a reference source for future studies related to nursery education and pupils' academic achievement.
1.8 Scope of Study

The study covered nursery education exposure, teaching methods, instructional materials, teachers' competence, parental involvement, and pupils' achievement in English Language.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
