1.1 Introduction
Social media influencers are individuals who have built credibility and large followings on digital platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, and who are able to influence the opinions, attitudes, and lifestyle choices of their audiences through content creation and online engagement. They are considered key actors in modern digital communication because they shape consumer behaviour and social perceptions through relatable and persuasive content (Freberg et al., 2011).
Youth lifestyle choices refer to the patterns of behaviour, consumption, values, and social practices adopted by young people as they interact with their environment and peers, particularly in areas such as fashion, diet, entertainment, relationships, education, and personal development. In recent years, social media has become a dominant force in shaping youth identity and lifestyle orientation, especially in urban areas such as Calabar Municipality. The increasing accessibility of smartphones and internet connectivity has exposed youths to a continuous stream of influencer-generated content that often presents idealized lifestyles.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Social media influencers have become a central feature of contemporary digital communication, shaping how individuals, especially youths, perceive lifestyle, identity, and consumption behaviour. According to Freberg, Graham, McGaughey, and Freberg (2011), social media influencers are individuals who gain credibility and large followings on online platforms and are able to affect the attitudes and behaviours of their audiences through content creation and personal branding. These influencers operate across platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook, where they present curated content that reflects lifestyles, fashion trends, beauty standards, and social experiences that are often aspirational in nature.
According to Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), social media platforms provide interactive digital spaces that allow users not only to consume content but also to engage with and replicate the behaviours they observe online. This interactive nature of social media has made influencers powerful agents of socialization, particularly among young people who are highly active on these platforms. Youths are in a developmental stage where identity formation, peer influence, and social validation play significant roles in shaping their behaviour and lifestyle decisions. As a result, influencers often serve as reference points for how young people define success, attractiveness, and social belonging.
According to Bandura (1977), individuals learn behaviours through observation, imitation, and modelling, particularly when the observed individuals are perceived as successful or attractive. Bandura asserted that this social learning process is intensified when individuals repeatedly encounter role models in their environment, including digital environments. In the context of social media, influencers function as such role models, and their content significantly shapes youth behaviour, including fashion choices, dietary habits, leisure activities, and even career aspirations.
According to De Veirman, Cauberghe, and Hudders (2017), influencer marketing has a strong impact on consumer attitudes and purchasing decisions, especially among younger audiences. They reported that the number of followers and perceived credibility of influencers significantly affect how audiences respond to promoted products and lifestyle content. This implies that youths are not only passive consumers of influencer content but are also active participants who are influenced in their decision-making processes regarding lifestyle choices.
According to Lou and Yuan (2019), the perceived authenticity and trustworthiness of influencers play a critical role in shaping audience engagement and behavioural influence. They affirmed that when influencers are perceived as genuine and relatable, their ability to shape audience attitudes increases significantly. This is particularly relevant in youth populations, where emotional connection and relatability often determine the extent of influence.
In many urban settings, including Calabar Municipality, social media usage among youths has increased significantly due to improved access to smartphones and internet connectivity. According to Statista (2024), social media penetration among young people continues to grow globally, with a substantial proportion of daily online activity involving engagement with influencer-generated content. This trend indicates that youths are increasingly exposed to lifestyle narratives that emphasize luxury consumption, physical appearance, entertainment culture, and digital entrepreneurship.
According to Chae (2018), social media exposure often leads to upward social comparison among users, particularly when they are exposed to idealized representations of life. Chae stated that such comparisons can influence self-esteem and satisfaction levels, leading youths to adjust their lifestyle choices in order to align with perceived online standards. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in Calabar Municipality, where cultural values and modern digital influences intersect to shape youth behaviour.
According to Djafarova and Rushworth (2017), young consumers are more likely to trust social media influencers than traditional advertising channels because influencers are perceived as more relatable and authentic. They contend that this trust contributes significantly to the persuasive power of influencers in shaping lifestyle decisions such as fashion preferences, beauty routines, travel choices, and consumption habits.
However, the influence of social media influencers is not entirely negative. According to Abidin (2016), influencers also contribute to the dissemination of positive content, including entrepreneurship motivation, educational awareness, fitness inspiration, and mental health advocacy. Abidin affirmed that influencers have created new opportunities for self-expression and economic empowerment, especially among youths who engage with digital content creation as a career path.
Despite these positive contributions, concerns remain regarding the unrealistic lifestyles often portrayed on social media, which may not reflect real-life conditions. According to Fardouly et al. (2015), exposure to idealized online images can contribute to body dissatisfaction and lifestyle pressure among young individuals. This suggests that the influence of social media influencers is complex, involving both beneficial and potentially harmful effects on youth lifestyle choices.
This study is set against the backdrop of the rapid growth of social media usage among youths and the increasing influence of digital personalities on lifestyle choices, particularly in urban areas like Calabar Municipality where access to smartphones and internet connectivity continues to expand.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that youths are increasingly exposed to social media influencers who present curated lifestyles around fashion, relationships, education, entertainment, and consumption patterns. These influencers, through platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, often project idealized lifestyles that shape perceptions of success, beauty, and social acceptance.
Additionally, the influence of these digital personalities is not always neutral, as they contribute significantly to shaping youth lifestyle choices, including spending habits, body image perceptions, fashion preferences, and social behaviour. Empirical studies have shown that influencer marketing and online peer endorsements strongly affect youth consumer behaviour and identity formation (De Veirman et al., 2017).
Furthermore, social media influencers are also promoting positive behavioural change in areas such as entrepreneurship, education, personal development, and mental health awareness. Through motivational content and skill-based tutorials, some influencers contribute to youth empowerment and knowledge acquisition. However, the balance between positive and negative influence remains a concern, as the persuasive nature of influencer content is often driven by commercial interests and audience engagement strategies rather than developmental outcomes. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the extent to which social media influencers shape the lifestyle choices of youths in Calabar Municipality.
