1.1 Introduction
Physical Education is an educational discipline that focuses on the development of physical fitness, motor skills, healthy behaviours, and positive attitudes toward lifelong participation in physical activity. According to UNESCO (2015), Physical Education is a planned and inclusive learning experience that enables learners to acquire the knowledge, skills, confidence, and values required to maintain active and healthy lifestyles. It occupies an important position in secondary school education because it contributes to students' physical, mental, emotional, and social development.
Lifestyle diseases, also referred to as non-communicable diseases, are health conditions that are largely associated with unhealthy behavioural patterns such as physical inactivity, poor nutrition, excessive sedentary behaviour, tobacco use, and harmful alcohol consumption. The World Health Organization (2022) reported that non-communicable diseases account for the majority of deaths worldwide, with many of their risk factors beginning during childhood and adolescence.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Physical Education has become an important component of formal education because it promotes healthy living, physical fitness, and the overall development of learners. According to UNESCO (2015), Physical Education is a planned educational process that develops students' physical competence, confidence, knowledge, and motivation to participate in lifelong physical activity. The subject extends beyond sports and recreation by equipping learners with healthy habits that reduce the likelihood of preventable diseases. As societies continue to experience changes in technology, transportation, and lifestyle, the need for effective Physical Education has become increasingly important in helping young people maintain active and healthy lives.
Lifestyle diseases, also known as non-communicable diseases, are long-term health conditions that develop largely as a result of unhealthy behavioural patterns. According to the World Health Organization (2022), physical inactivity, unhealthy diets, obesity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption are among the major risk factors responsible for the increasing burden of these diseases. Lifestyle diseases include obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and certain forms of cancer. Although these conditions were once associated mainly with adults, they are now becoming more common among children and adolescents due to sedentary lifestyles and declining participation in regular physical activities.
According to Sallis et al. (2016), regular physical activity contributes significantly to the prevention of chronic diseases by improving cardiovascular fitness, maintaining healthy body weight, strengthening bones and muscles, and enhancing mental well-being. Similarly, Strong et al. (2005) reported that school-aged children who engage consistently in moderate and vigorous physical activities experience better physical health and lower risks of obesity than those who are physically inactive. These findings demonstrate that encouraging participation in Physical Education during adolescence provides long-term health benefits that extend into adulthood.
In the same vein, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2021) reported that school-based Physical Education programmes play an essential role in helping students achieve the recommended levels of daily physical activity. The organization affirmed that regular participation in structured physical activities improves concentration, academic achievement, emotional stability, and social interaction while reducing health risks associated with inactive lifestyles. Furthermore, the World Health Organization (2020) asserted that children and adolescents should engage in at least sixty minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day to maintain optimal health and reduce the likelihood of developing lifestyle diseases.
According to Bailey (2006), Physical Education contributes not only to physical development but also to cognitive, emotional, and social growth. Participation in organized physical activities encourages teamwork, discipline, leadership, self-confidence, and problem-solving abilities. Moreover, Trudeau and Shephard (2008) contended that students who participate actively in Physical Education often demonstrate improved classroom behaviour, stronger learning outcomes, and healthier lifestyles. These benefits indicate that Physical Education serves as an important educational tool that supports both academic success and disease prevention.
Lifestyle changes associated with modernization have significantly reduced physical activity among adolescents. According to Guthold et al. (2020), the widespread use of smartphones, computers, online entertainment, and motorized transportation has contributed to increasing levels of sedentary behaviour among young people across the world. Additionally, Tremblay et al. (2017) reported that prolonged screen time limits opportunities for outdoor activities and exercise, thereby increasing the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and related health complications among school children.
The Nigerian education system recognizes the importance of Physical Education in promoting students' health and national development. According to the Federal Ministry of Education (2013), Physical Education forms an integral part of the secondary school curriculum because it develops physically fit, disciplined, and productive citizens. The policy emphasizes active participation in sports, recreation, and health education as essential aspects of holistic education.
This study is set against the backdrop of investigating the role of Physical Education in preventing lifestyle diseases in secondary schools, with particular emphasis on the Federal Ministry of Education as the case study.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that many secondary school students are becoming less physically active, which has increased the risk of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Although Physical Education is included in the school curriculum to encourage regular exercise and healthy living, many schools still face problems such as inadequate sports facilities, shortage of qualified Physical Education teachers, poor funding, and limited time for practical activities (UNESCO, 2015).
Additionally, the Federal Ministry of Education has introduced policies that encourage sports participation and health education in secondary schools. Nevertheless, the level of implementation differs across schools, thereby limiting the expected health benefits among students. As a result, many students continue to exhibit sedentary lifestyles that increase their vulnerability to preventable health conditions and reduce their overall physical well-being (Federal Ministry of Education, 2013).
Furthermore, many adolescents do not engage in enough daily physical activity to maintain good health. As a result, students are more likely to develop unhealthy lifestyles that may lead to preventable diseases (Guthold et al., 2020). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the role of Physical Education in preventing lifestyle diseases in secondary schools.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to investigate the role of Physical Education in preventing lifestyle diseases in secondary schools. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To examine the implementation of Physical Education programmes in secondary schools.
- To determine the level of students' participation in Physical Education activities.
- To assess the availability of Physical Education facilities, equipment, and qualified teachers in secondary schools.
- To identify the challenges affecting the effectiveness of Physical Education in preventing lifestyle diseases.
- To recommend strategies for improving the role of Physical Education in preventing lifestyle diseases in secondary schools.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- How are Physical Education programmes implemented in secondary schools?
- What is the level of students' participation in Physical Education activities?
- To what extent are Physical Education facilities, equipment, and qualified teachers available in secondary schools?
- What challenges affect the effectiveness of Physical Education in preventing lifestyle diseases?
- What strategies can improve the role of Physical Education in preventing lifestyle diseases in secondary schools?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: There is no significant relationship between the implementation of Physical Education programmes and the prevention of lifestyle diseases in secondary schools.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between the implementation of Physical Education programmes and the prevention of lifestyle diseases in secondary schools.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: There is no significant relationship between students' participation in Physical Education activities and the prevention of lifestyle diseases.
- H1: There is a significant relationship between students' participation in Physical Education activities and the prevention of lifestyle diseases.
Hypothesis Three
- H0: The availability of Physical Education facilities, equipment, and qualified teachers has no significant influence on the prevention of lifestyle diseases.
- H1: The availability of Physical Education facilities, equipment, and qualified teachers has a significant influence on the prevention of lifestyle diseases.
Hypothesis Four
- H0: The challenges affecting Physical Education have no significant effect on the prevention of lifestyle diseases in secondary schools.
- H1: The challenges affecting Physical Education have a significant effect on the prevention of lifestyle diseases in secondary schools.
Hypothesis Five
- H0: The proposed improvement strategies have no significant relationship with the effectiveness of Physical Education in preventing lifestyle diseases.
- H1: The proposed improvement strategies have a significant relationship with the effectiveness of Physical Education in preventing lifestyle diseases.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide reliable information on the contribution of Physical Education to preventing lifestyle diseases among secondary school students. Also, the evidence will encourage schools to improve students' participation in regular physical activities for better health.
Furthermore, the results will assist educational authorities in making better decisions on the planning and implementation of Physical Education programmes.
Lastly, the information will contribute to existing academic literature for future studies on Physical Education and school health.
1.8 Scope of Study
This study focuses on investigating the role of Physical Education in preventing lifestyle diseases in secondary schools.
The study covers the implementation of Physical Education programmes, students' participation in physical activities, the availability of facilities and qualified teachers, challenges affecting programme effectiveness, and possible improvement strategies.
1.9 Limitations of the study
The study was limited to selected secondary schools supervised by the Federal Ministry of Education in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. During the course of the study, difficulty in accessing some respondents and obtaining relevant official records was experienced.
Furthermore, the time available for data collection was also limited. In addition, financial constraints affected transportation, printing of questionnaires, and other data collection expenses. However, these limitations were carefully managed and did not affect the overall quality of the study.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Physical Education:
According to UNESCO (2015), Physical Education is a planned educational programme that develops students' physical fitness, movement skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed for lifelong participation in physical activities.
Lifestyle Diseases:
According to the World Health Organization (2022), lifestyle diseases are non-communicable diseases that develop mainly from unhealthy behaviours such as physical inactivity, unhealthy diets, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption.
Prevention:
Prevention refers to the measures taken to reduce or avoid the occurrence of diseases through healthy practices, regular exercise, and health education (World Health Organization, 2022).
Secondary School:
A secondary school is an institution that provides education to learners after primary education and before tertiary education, following the Nigerian educational system (Federal Ministry of Education, 2013).
Students:
Students are learners enrolled in secondary schools who participate in academic and extracurricular activities, including Physical Education programmes.
Physical Activity:
According to the World Health Organization (2020), physical activity refers to any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure, including exercise, sports, games, and recreational activities.
Sedentary Lifestyle:
A sedentary lifestyle refers to a pattern of living characterized by prolonged sitting or low levels of physical activity, which increases the risk of lifestyle diseases (World Health Organization, 2020).
