1.1 Background of Study
Over the decades, investigative journalism has evolved into a vital component of democratic societies, serving as a watchdog that holds power to account and provides transparency in governance and public affairs. The Cross River Newspaper Corporation (CHRONICLE), established as a state-owned media outlet, has over the years embraced investigative journalism as a core part of its mandate. The CHRONICLE has been instrumental in reporting on conflicts within Cross River State, including communal disputes, political rivalry, and resource control issues.
In Nigeria, Ogbondah (2001) stated that investigative journalism began gaining prominence in the post-independence era as newspapers and broadcasters sought to address societal issues and governmental abuses (Ogbondah, 2001). In such contexts, the media particularly investigative journalism plays a crucial role in promoting understanding and facilitating peaceful resolutions by uncovering hidden truths and encouraging accountability. According to Houston (2010), investigative journalism goes beyond superficial reporting by meticulously probing issues that contribute to conflicts, such as corruption, injustice, and abuse of power (Houston, 2010).
The Cross River Newspaper Corporation (CHRONICLE) has emerged as a significant media institution within Cross River State, Nigeria. It has consistently engaged in investigative reporting that highlights social, political, and economic issues fueling conflicts within the state. Given the volatile nature of some disputes in the region, CHRONICLE's investigative efforts have been instrumental in bringing conflicting parties to the negotiating table, thus contributing to conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
Investigative journalism according to De Burgh (2008) is a specialized form of journalism that involves in-depth reporting to uncover facts that are often concealed, neglected, or deliberately hidden from the public. It seeks to expose wrongdoing, injustice, and corruption through thorough research and evidence-based reporting (De Burgh, 2008). Unlike routine news reporting, investigative journalism requires persistence, and verification of facts to reveal the truth behind complex issues.
In the context of conflict resolution, investigative journalism plays a significant role by providing accurate information, giving voice to marginalized groups, and holding conflicting parties accountable. It helps to clarify misunderstandings, uncover root causes of conflicts, and promote transparency, which are essential elements in fostering peace and reconciliation (McGoldrick, 2005). The Cross River Newspaper Corporation (CHRONICLE) has been recognized as a key player in the media landscape of Cross River State, Nigeria. Through its investigative reports, the CHRONICLE has contributed to addressing and resolving various conflicts within the state by exposing injustices and encouraging dialogue among conflicting parties.
Therefore, this research seeks to examine how investigative journalism, as practiced by the CHRONICLE, serves as a tool for conflict resolution, thereby promoting peace and social cohesion in the region.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that many conflicts in Cross River State are fueled by misinformation, lack of transparency, and poor communication between conflicting parties. The CHRONICLE is positioned to bridge these divides, but it is not always clear how effectively investigative reports influence the behavior of stakeholders or contribute to lasting peace. Sometimes, the challenges faced by journalists such as political pressure, limited resources, and safety concerns hinder the full potential of investigative journalism as a conflict resolution tool (Hamilton, 2004).
Furthermore, there is problem of public trust and media literacy. When communities do not fully trust the media, even the most well-researched investigative reports struggle to mediate conflict or promote reconciliation. It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to explore the operational, institutional, and relational difficulties that undermine effective collaboration between the Lagos State Ministry of Education and private educational providers.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine how investigative journalism practiced by the Cross River Newspaper Corporation (CHRONICLE) serves as an effective means of conflict resolution within Cross River State.
The objectives of the study are as follows:
- To explore the role of investigative journalism in uncovering the root causes of conflicts reported by CHRONICLE.
- To assess the impact of CHRONICLE's investigative reports on the attitudes and actions of conflicting parties.
- To identify the challenges faced by investigative journalists at CHRONICLE in promoting conflict resolution.
- To evaluate the level of public trust and reception towards investigative journalism in conflict situations within Cross River State.
- To recommend strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of investigative journalism in resolving conflicts through CHRONICLE.
1.4 Research Questions
Based on the objectives of the study, the following research questions have been formulated:
- What role does investigative journalism play in uncovering the root causes of conflicts reported by CHRONICLE?
- How do investigative reports by CHRONICLE influence the attitudes and actions of conflicting parties in Cross River State?

1.5 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will benefit academics and researchers by filling gaps in knowledge regarding the practical application of investigative journalism in conflict resolution, particularly in the Nigerian context. Also, this study will inform the public about the power of responsible journalism in promoting transparency and accountability, which will encourage greater media literacy and trust.
Furthermore, the research will assist policymakers and government officials in recognizing the value of transparent and truthful reporting, leading to policies that protect press freedom and promote conflict-sensitive journalism.
Lastly, this study will contribute to the broader discourse on peace journalism and serve as a foundation for future strategies aimed at leveraging investigative journalism to foster peaceful coexistence in regions prone to conflicts.
1.6 Scope of Study
This study focuses on the role of investigative journalism in conflict resolution as practiced by the Cross River Newspaper Corporation (CHRONICLE), a state-owned media organization based in Cross River State, Nigeria. The scope is limited to the CHRONICLE and does not extend to other private or national media organizations.
1.7 Limitations of the Study
Several limitations were encountered during the course of this study, which may have influenced the results and conclusions.
- Delay from Respondents: Many participants experienced time constraints or hesitated to commit to the study due to their busy schedules. This delay limited the volume of data that could be gathered within the planned timeframe.
- Financial Constraints: Due to budget limitations, there was insufficient funding to expand the research to a larger sample size or to include more varied geographic locations, which might have provided a broader perspective.
- Time Constraints: The time available for conducting the study was limited, reducing the possibility of performing a more in-depth longitudinal analysis.
1.8 Definition of Terms
Investigative Journalism:
It refers to a form of in-depth reporting that seeks to uncover facts, often hidden or ignored, to expose wrongdoing, corruption, or social injustices. It involves thorough research and verification to provide the public with truthful, detailed information that holds individuals or institutions accountable (De Burgh, 2008). In this study, investigative journalism is understood as a powerful tool that not only informs but also helps resolve conflicts by revealing underlying causes.
Conflict Resolution:
It is the process through which disputes or disagreements between parties are peacefully settled or managed. It involves communication, negotiation, and mediation to reach mutual understanding and restore harmony (Fisher, Ury, & Patton, 1991).
Cross River Newspaper Corporation (CHRONICLE):
It is a state-owned media organization in Cross River State, Nigeria, responsible for producing news and investigative reports that serve the public interest. It plays a crucial role in informing citizens and acting as a mediator in societal conflicts by providing balanced and factual reportage (CHRONICLE Annual Report, 2023).
Media Literacy:
It refers to the ability of individuals to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media content critically (Potter, 2013). This concept is relevant to the study because the effectiveness of investigative journalism in conflict resolution depends on how well the audience understands and engages with the information presented.
