ABSTRACT

John Locke’s political thought is well represented in his two treatise of government, the first was actually a response to Robert Filmer, it was a critique of the absolutist position while the second treatise presents Locke’s own preferred theoretical alternative which is a limited government based on popular consent. The aim of the study is to scrutinize the John Locke Political Power Vis a Vis Abuse of Power. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to assess the factors instigating the Abuse of Power and evaluate the Despotic Rule in Nigeria. The study of John Locke's political power has much relevance to the Nigerian politics. The study will address many issues stemming from political, social and the likes. Equally, the study is necessary because it presents a well-established political society whereby important dimensions of political life are discussed and normalized. The nature of political terrain in the country today will inspire us to appreciate Locke's theory well. There is no doubt about it. This work will concentrate, to a large extent, on the study of the analysis of political power and its dimensions, not excluding its merits and demerits. The above comprehension will assist in relating it to Nigerian democracy as it pertains to Leadership problems and the nature of political power. Ability to understand these will enable us to see loopholes in Nigerian Leadership and also enable us to give reasonable thought to how best the society should be governed.
