1.1 Introduction
Plastic waste recycling refers to the process of collecting, sorting, processing, and converting used plastic materials into new and reusable products in order to reduce environmental pollution and conserve natural resources. According to United Nations Environment Programme, plastic recycling is an essential environmental management strategy that helps reduce the volume of plastic waste entering landfills, oceans, and open environments while promoting sustainable production and consumption patterns ((UNEP, 2018). Environmental sustainability refers to the responsible use of environmental resources in a way that ensures ecological balance is maintained for present and future generations. According to World Bank, environmental sustainability involves integrating environmental protection into development processes to reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, and support long-term economic and social well-being (World Bank, 2019).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Plastic pollution has become one of the most persistent environmental challenges globally due to the rapid increase in plastic production and consumption. Millions of tons of plastic waste are generated annually, with a significant proportion ending up in landfills, drainage systems, rivers, and oceans. The organization further stated that the non-biodegradable nature of plastic makes it remain in the environment for hundreds of years, thereby causing long-term ecological damage (UNEP, 2018). According to World Bank (World Bank, 2019), rapid urbanization and industrialization in developing countries have significantly increased the generation of solid waste, particularly plastic waste. The World Bank asserted that many cities in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Lagos, face severe challenges in managing waste due to inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, and weak institutional capacity. It also stated that inefficient waste management systems often result in environmental degradation, flooding, and public health risks. The institution affirmed that improving recycling systems is critical for reducing environmental pressure and achieving sustainable urban development.
According to Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD, 2022), plastic waste management is closely linked to the concept of the circular economy, which promotes the continuous use of resources through recycling, reuse, and recovery. The OECD contends that shifting from a linear economy to a circular system is essential for reducing waste generation and minimizing environmental impacts. It further asserted that countries that adopt circular economy principles experience improved resource efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and enhanced environmental sustainability. However, it also noted that many developing countries still face challenges in implementing effective recycling systems due to technological and institutional limitations.
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) stated that recycling within industrial zones helps to minimize environmental pollution while improving resource efficiency. It also affirmed that integrating recycling systems into industrial operations supports cleaner production and contributes to environmental sustainability. However, it contended that the effectiveness of recycling systems depends on the availability of modern technology, skilled manpower, and supportive policy frameworks (UNIDO, 2021). In Nigeria, plastic waste management remains a critical environmental issue due to increasing population growth, urban expansion, and industrial activities.
According to National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, improper waste disposal practices are common in many urban and industrial areas, leading to blocked drainage systems, flooding, and environmental pollution. NESREA reported that although environmental regulations exist, enforcement remains weak, and compliance levels are low. It further stated that recycling activities are still developing and require stronger institutional support to achieve meaningful environmental impact (NESREA, 2020). Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company operates within one of Nigeria's major industrial hubs, where large volumes of plastic waste are generated from manufacturing, packaging, and logistics activities. According to environmental studies, industrial recycling facilities in such zones play a vital role in reducing waste accumulation and promoting environmental sustainability. However, the effectiveness of these operations in fully addressing environmental challenges remains under-researched, particularly in the Nigerian context. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP, 2020) stated that recycling is a key tool for achieving environmental sustainability because it reduces waste generation and conserves natural resources. It also affirmed that community participation, technological innovation, and policy support are essential for effective recycling systems (UNDP, 2020).
This study is set against the backdrop of increasing environmental concerns caused by plastic waste pollution, the growing need for sustainable waste management systems, and the role of industrial recycling in promoting environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that plastic waste generation has continued to increase globally due to rapid industrialization, urban growth, and changing consumption patterns. Many developing countries struggle with inefficient waste collection and disposal systems, resulting in large volumes of waste being dumped in open spaces and drainage channels (World Bank, 2019). On the other hand, recycling operations in many industrial settings face several challenges that affect their efficiency.
Furthermore, there is insufficient localized research focusing on how plastic waste recycling within industrial zones in Nigeria contributes to environmental sustainability. Most available studies focus on general waste management issues rather than specific case studies of recycling companies operating within free trade zones, creating a gap in knowledge regarding actual environmental impact. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine plastic waste recycling and its contribution to environmental sustainability, using Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company as a case study.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine plastic waste recycling and its contribution to environmental sustainability, using Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company as a case study. The study seeks to:
- Examine the processes involved in plastic waste recycling at Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company.
- Assess the contribution of plastic waste recycling to environmental sustainability in the study area.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of recycling practices in reducing environmental pollution.
- Identify the challenges associated with plastic waste recycling in the organization.
- Determine strategies for improving plastic waste recycling for enhanced environmental sustainability.
1.5 Research Questions
The following research questions are formulated to guide the study:
- What are the processes involved in plastic waste recycling at Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company?
- How does plastic waste recycling contribute to environmental sustainability in the study area?
- How effective are the recycling practices in reducing environmental pollution?
- What are the challenges associated with plastic waste recycling in the organization?
- What strategies can be adopted to improve plastic waste recycling for enhanced environmental sustainability?
1.6 Research Hypotheses
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: Plastic waste recycling has no significant contribution to environmental sustainability at Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company.
- H1: Plastic waste recycling has a significant contribution to environmental sustainability at Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Recycling practices at Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company are not effective in reducing environmental pollution.
- H1: Recycling practices at Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company are effective in reducing environmental pollution.
Hypothesis Three
- H0: There are no significant challenges affecting plastic waste recycling at Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company.
- H1: There are significant challenges affecting plastic waste recycling at Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company.
Hypothesis Four
- H0: Improvement strategies do not significantly enhance plastic waste recycling for environmental sustainability.
- H1: Improvement strategies significantly enhance plastic waste recycling for environmental sustainability.
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will provide reliable data on the effectiveness of plastic waste recycling in reducing environmental pollution in Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company.
Furthermore, the research will support recycling companies in improving operational efficiency in plastic waste processing. In addition, the findings will assist environmental regulators in strengthening compliance monitoring within industrial recycling zones.
Lastly, the findings will contribute to academic research on sustainable waste management practices in Nigeria.
1.8 Scope of Study
The study is limited to Lekki Free Trade Zone Recycling Company in Lagos State, Nigeria, focusing on plastic waste recycling processes and their contribution to environmental sustainability within the industrial zone.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Plastic Waste Recycling:

Waste Management:
Waste Management refers to the collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of waste materials in an environmentally safe manner. According to United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO, 2021), effective waste management systems are essential for reducing environmental pollution and supporting sustainable industrial development.
Recycling Facility:
Recycling Facility refers to an industrial or organized center where waste materials are processed and converted into reusable products. Such facilities play a critical role in reducing landfill waste and promoting circular economy practices.
