1.1 Introduction

Through platforms like Twitter and Instagram, individuals can transcend geographical boundaries and engage in meaningful conversations with people from diverse backgrounds. As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
The roots of social media can be traced back to the early days of the internet, with platforms like Usenet and Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) laying the groundwork for online communities and information sharing. However, it was the emergence of platforms like Six Degrees, Friendster, and MySpace in the late 1990s and early 2000s that popularized the concept of social networking. The advent of Web 2.0 technologies, characterized by user-generated content and interactivity, further accelerated the growth of social media. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube revolutionized the way people communicate, share content, and connect with one another, ushering in an era of unprecedented digital interconnectedness.
Advancements in mobile technology, particularly the widespread adoption of smartphones and mobile internet access, have been instrumental in the proliferation of social media. The convenience and accessibility afforded by mobile devices have enabled users to stay connected and engaged with social media platforms anytime, anywhere, contributing to their ubiquity in daily life.
Furthermore, the evolution of algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed social media platforms into sophisticated content recommendation engines, personalized advertising platforms, and data analytics tools. These technological innovations have fueled the monetization of user data and reshaped the digital advertising landscape, presenting both opportunities and challenges for users, businesses, and policymakers alike.
The rise of social media has had profound societal implications, reshaping communication patterns, social interactions, and cultural norms. From the Arab Spring to the #MeToo movement, social media has served as a catalyst for social and political change, empowering grassroots activism and amplifying marginalized voices. However, social media's impact is not uniformly positive, as evidenced by its role in spreading misinformation, fueling polarization, and exacerbating mental health issues. The echo chambers and filter bubbles created by algorithmic content curation algorithms have contributed to the proliferation of fake news and echo chambers, undermining trust in traditional media and democratic institutions.
A direct relationship exists between Social media usage and the academic performance of students in universities. However the darker side within technological evolution has resulted in dilemmas such as the setback of real values of life especially among students who form the majority of users interacting through the use of social networking sites. Online social networking sites focus on building and reflecting social associations among people who share interests and or activities. With so many social networking sites displayed on the internet, students are tempted to abandon their homework and reading times in preference for chatting online with friends. Many students are now addicted to the online rave of the moment, with Facebook, Twitter etc. Today most youths and students possess Facebook accounts.
The advanced and improved usage of social media platforms such as Facebook has become a worldwide phenomenon for quite some time. Though it all started has been a hobby for several computer literates individual has changed to become a social norm and existence-style for students around the world (Nicole, 2007). According to Nicole, (2007), students and teenagers have especially recognized these social media platforms to be able to contact their peers, share information, reinvent their personas and showcase their social live. Facebook users often experience poor academic performance. Also Karpinski (2009) stated that social media has a negative association with students’ academic performance which is much greater than the advantages derived through the use of social media platforms.
Social information processing theory is an interpersonal communication theory which suggests that online interpersonal relationship development might require more time to develop than face-to-face relationships, but when developed, it has the same influence as face-to-face communication. This means, the more students use social media, the more they influence their disposition to studies, given the fact that friends from social media will begin to exert influence on each other.
Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the Positive Impact and Challenges of Social Media.
1.3 Statement of Problem
Investigation revealed that there is the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation on social media platforms poses a significant threat to public discourse, democracy, and societal well-being. False or misleading information spreads rapidly through viral content, echo chambers, and algorithmic amplification, undermining trust in reliable sources and fueling polarization.
Additionally, the excessive use of social media has been linked to a range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. The addictive nature of social media platforms, characterized by endless scrolling, notifications, and likes, can disrupt sleep patterns, impair cognitive function, and exacerbate feelings of loneliness and social isolation.
Furthermore, the anonymity and accessibility of social media platforms have facilitated the proliferation of cyber-bullying and online harassment, particularly among vulnerable populations such as adolescents and marginalized communities. The prevalence of toxic behavior, hate speech, and trolling contributes to psychological harm, social isolation, and even tragic consequences such as self-harm and suicide. Thus, this research tends to investigate the positive impact and challenges of social media.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to examine the Positive Impact and Challenges of Social Media. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To explore the relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and self-esteem;
- To investigate the impact of algorithmic bias, filter bubbles, and echo chambers on information consumption and polarization;
- To investigate the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news on social media platforms;
- To explore the positive impacts of social media on communication, connectivity, and community building; and
- To propose recommendations for mitigating the negative effects and enhancing the positive potential of social media.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- What is the impact of algorithmic bias, filter bubbles, and echo chambers on information consumption and polarization?
- Does social media permits the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news?
- What are the positive impacts of social media on communication, connectivity, and community building?
- What is the relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and self-esteem?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

The scope of this research is focused on the Positive Impact and Challenges of Social Media among Students in University of Lagos.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Lack of Initial Cooperation from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

It is someone who is Studying at a University or School. Also, it is someone who is very interested in a particular subject.

A computer is a machine that receives or stores or process data quickly according to a stored program.

A short message posted on Twitter (a micro blog).
ICT:
It is an acronym for Information and Communication Technology.

The use of internet to make information about yourself available to other people especially people you share an interest with to send messages to them.
