    ABSTRACT


    Skin infections are conditions caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites that affect the skin, leading to discomfort and health complications among school children. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence, types, causes, and preventive strategies for skin infections among school-aged children in Lagos State. The outcome of this research was motivated by the frequent occurrence of skin infections in schools, poor hygiene practices, and the need for effective school health interventions to reduce infection rates and improve child well-being. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, interviews with teachers and parents, and direct observation of hygiene practices and school environments.

    The findings show that 66.7% of children were infected, with fungal infections affecting 33.3%, bacterial 26.7%, viral 20%, and parasitic 13.3%. Good hygiene was practiced by 40% of children, while 26.7% had poor hygiene. Furthermore, school programs were very effective for 26.7% of respondents. It is concluded that skin infections are prevalent among school children and are influenced by hygiene, environmental, and socio-economic factors. Based on the findings, it was recommended that routine health screenings and prompt treatment of affected children should be carried out to ensure early detection and management of skin conditions. Also, classroom environments should be organized to reduce overcrowding, improving ventilation and personal space to limit the transmission of infections.



    1.1 Introduction

    Skin infections are medical conditions that affect the skin, often caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, or parasites, leading to symptoms such as rashes, itching, lesions, and inflammation (Hay et al., 2014). The skin, being the largest organ of the body, serves as a protective barrier against environmental hazards, but when compromised, it becomes susceptible to infections that may affect physical health, social interactions, and psychological well-being (Williams et al., 2011).

    The prevalence of skin infections among school children has been a growing concern in public health, especially in low- and middle-income countries where factors such as poor sanitation, overcrowding, inadequate personal hygiene, and limited access to healthcare contribute to the spread of infectious dermatoses (Mahé et al., 2005).

    As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.


    1.2 Background of Study

    Skin infections are among the most common health problems affecting children worldwide, and they have significant implications for both physical and psychological well-being. According to Hay et al. (2014), skin infections result from various etiological agents, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, which compromise the skin's primary role as a protective barrier. These infections manifest in a variety of clinical presentations, including rashes, itching, lesions, and inflammation, often leading to discomfort and social stigma. The authors reported that in developing countries, these infections are particularly prevalent among school-aged children due to factors such as overcrowding, poor hygiene, and limited access to health services.

    Mahé et al. (2005) asserted that skin diseases in children are frequently underestimated in public health programs, despite their high prevalence and the potential for complications if left untreated. The study emphasized that conditions such as tinea capitis, scabies, impetigo, and other fungal and bacterial infections are pervasive in school environments where children have close contact with one another. The authors stated that school settings often become hotspots for the transmission of these infections because of shared personal items, inadequate sanitation facilities, and insufficient health education on hygiene practices.

    Ogunbiyi et al. (2021) affirmed that the burden of skin infections among school children not only affects physical health but also has psychological and social consequences. Children with visible skin conditions may experience stigmatization, reduced self-esteem, and decreased participation in school activities, which can impact academic performance. The authors contended that the lack of timely treatment and health-seeking behavior among parents and caregivers contributes significantly to the persistence of skin infections in school-aged populations. Cultural perceptions and misconceptions that skin conditions are minor or self-limiting have been reported to reduce the likelihood of seeking professional care.

    In addition, Williams et al. (2011) stated that environmental and socio-economic factors play a crucial role in the prevalence and distribution of skin infections. Overcrowded classrooms, limited access to clean water, poor sanitation, and warm, humid climates create favorable conditions for the spread of infectious dermatoses. The authors reported that children living in rural or semi-urban communities are particularly vulnerable due to inadequate health infrastructure and limited health education programs. According to the same study, preventive measures such as handwashing, regular bathing, proper laundry practices, and health education are critical but often insufficiently implemented in many schools.

    Hay et al. (2014) affirmed that children with visible skin lesions often face teasing, social exclusion, and anxiety, which can have long-term effects on mental health and social development. The study stated that addressing the health of children in school settings requires a holistic approach that combines clinical treatment with preventive measures, health education, and community engagement. According to Williams et al. (2011), integrating school-based screening programs, health campaigns, and hygiene promotion into the educational system is a practical strategy for reducing the prevalence of skin infections and enhancing overall child well-being. On the other hand, the challenges of implementing effective interventions are significant. Limited resources, insufficient training of school health personnel, and low awareness among parents and teachers often impede the success of school health programs.

    Ogunbiyi et al. (2021) reported that without proper monitoring and evaluation, interventions may not reach the children most at risk, and the cycle of infection continues. The authors contended that understanding local prevalence patterns and contextual risk factors is necessary to design culturally appropriate and sustainable programs. This study is set against the backdrop of these challenges and gaps in knowledge, aiming to provide insight into the prevalence, types, and determinants of skin infections among school children.


    1.3 Statement of Problems

    Investigation revealed that the prevalence of skin diseases among school children in various parts of the world is high, with infectious dermatoses such as fungal infections, scabies, and bacterial skin conditions being especially common (Hay et al., 2014; Ogunbiyi et al., 2021). The persistent burden of skin infections in school settings places a heavy toll on the health and well being of children. Affected children often experience itching, discomfort, and visible skin changes that may contribute to psychological distress and reduced self confidence during critical stages of social and academic development (Mahé et al., 2005).

    Furthermore, many studies have noted that children with skin infections may not seek or receive timely treatment due to perceptions that skin diseases are minor, lack of access to healthcare services, or limited health education among caregivers and school personnel (Mahé et al., 2005; Ogunbiyi et al., 2021). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to fill critical gaps in understanding the prevalence and determinants of skin infections among school children.


    1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

    The study aims to determine the prevalence and patterns of skin infections among school children. To achieve this aim, the study has the following objectives:

    1. To evaluate the role of socio-economic and environmental factors in the spread of skin infections among children.
    2. To assess the effectiveness of existing school health programs in preventing and managing skin infections.
    3. To identify the most common types of skin infections among school children in the area under study.
    4. To examine the relationship between hygiene practices and the prevalence of skin infections.
    5. To recommend strategies for reducing the prevalence of skin infections in school-aged children.

    1.5 Research Questions

    The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

    • What are the most common types of skin infections among school children in the area under study?
    • How do hygiene practices influence the prevalence of skin infections among school children?
    • What is the relationship between socio-economic and environmental factors and the occurrence of skin infections?
    • How effective are existing school health programs in preventing and managing skin infections?
    • What strategies can be recommended to reduce the prevalence of skin infections among school children?

    1.6 Research Hypotheses

    In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

    • H01: There is no significant relationship between hygiene practices and the prevalence of skin infections among school children in the area under study.
    • H02: Hygiene practices significantly influence the prevalence of skin infections among school children.
    • H03: Socio-economic and environmental factors significantly contribute to the occurrence of skin infections among school children.
    • H04: Existing school health programs have a significant impact on the prevention and management of skin infections.

    1.7 Significance of Study

    It is believed that at the completion of the study, the outcome will contribute to raising awareness among parents, teachers, and healthcare providers, ensuring early detection and management of skin infections. Also, the research will serve as a basis for policy formulation aimed at integrating dermatological health into school health programs.

    Furthermore, the study will guide the development of school health programs that improve hygiene practices and prevent skin infections. In addition, the research will provide information that will help them recognize, prevent, and seek treatment for skin infections in their children.

    Lastly, the study will provide data that will inform clinical interventions and community health strategies targeting pediatric skin diseases.


    1.8 Scope of Study

    The scope of the research is focused on the prevalence of skin infections among school children in Lagos State, Nigeria.


    1.9 Limitations of the Study

    During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

    1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
    2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
    3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

    1.10 Definition of Terms

    Skin Infection: A condition in which the skin is affected by pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, or parasites, leading to inflammation, itching, or lesions (Hay et al., 2014).

    Prevalence: The proportion of a population found to have a specific condition at a given time (Mahé et al., 2005).

    School Children: Individuals enrolled in primary or secondary educational institutions, generally aged between 5 and 18 years (Ogunbiyi et al., 2021).

    Hygiene Practices: Behaviors related to personal cleanliness, such as handwashing, bathing, and proper sanitation, that influence health outcomes (Williams et al., 2011).
