What are the Top 10 project topics on Chemical Engineering?
The list of top 10 suggested Chemical Engineering topics for final year project proposal submission are outlined as follows:
This project was carried out using bituminous coal (non activated) and the degree of refining of palm oil at different temperature and time using spectrophotometer. This was carried out to check the effectiveness of bituminous coal sample (bleaching earth) as a bleaching agent for palm oil. --The coal (bituminous coal) was collected in lump forms, it was air-dried to remove any moisture content, size reduced to refining process. --In the refining process, 1000g of palm oil was weighed with weighing balance. It was then degummed with citric acid solution and neutralized with sodium hydroxide (NaoH) solution. During the process of degumming and neutralization, the residues were removed from the palm oil by allowing it to settle down in a separating … read more
Soaps are the sodium salts or potassium salts of stearic acids or any other fatty acids. They are prepared by the saponification process, which is, reacting the oil which contain triglycerides with caustic soda (NaOH) to give the soap. However different oils have different composition of fatty acids which are responsible for different properties of soaps made out of them. In the present work 5 different types of oils are taken. They are blended in various ratios to prepare 14 different samples of soap. Different properties of these samples were analyzed to see which soap is the best one. The cleansing and lathering properties of all samples were compared. The blend of coconut oil and castor oil at 3:1 ratio … read more
Toilet and Laundary Soap is made by saponification, which is the hydrolysis of naturally occurring fats and oil by sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) or potassium hydroxide (caustic potash). Various additives have been used to impact some specific characteristics to the products. The study evaluated the Process and Quality Factors in Laundary and Toilet Soap Production. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to determine the Process and basic steps of producing Laundary and Toilet Soap and investigate the Quality Factors affecting Laundary and Toilet Soap Production. Various factors affected the quality of the soap produced. These include the method used in production, types and nature of oils used the percentage of the additives in the soap … read more
A comparative investigation was undertaken to determine the head loss coefficients for horizontally mounted and vertically mounted orifices using a Fluid mechanics and Heat transfer trainer developed in Nigeria. Experiments were carried out observing the procedure and the discharge of the flow of water was collected to obtain the volumetric flow rate and also read off the right and left limb of the horizontal and vertical manometers at different set points. The experimental measurements were subjected to further study to determine the head loss using the applied Bernoulli’s equation with addition of pump to the system.
A graph of head loss against the kinetic head of water was plotted and the gradient of the graph yield the head loss coefficient (k). … read more
This study was carried out to generate a design data, design and fabricate a maize corn-on-cob tray dryer used by maize farmers. Ripped maize corns with husks were bought from the market and preserved to retained its moisture content, dehusked and thereafter, dried to a given percentage moisture content of 15%. This was done by laboratory dryer. The drying rate data was generated and the high rate of 2.0g/hr was used afterwards to design and fabricate the corn-on-cob dryer. --From the results, drying of a sample of maize corn-on-cob by the laboratory dryer took a period of three days and six hours to reach the 15% moisture content (wet basis) needed. A test run was carried out on the fabricated … read more
This project was constructed with the desired materials of construction. The materials include aluminum, glass and wood. Aluminum was used in forming the skeleton of the structure, glass was used for the doors while wood was used in the sides, top, base and partitions. --After building the skeleton of the structure with aluminum, other materials were used and made up the complete structure. Materials like glass and wood. --Among the different types of glass available, the thick glass was used due to the fact that it offers greater resistance to hit than some thin glasses through the resistances is not much and can be broken by a fore more than fifty Newton — 50N. The glass was cut into the … read more
Stabilized adhesive was developed and produced. The development was made by the production of samples of the adhesive with varied quantities of the active ingredients and the additives. From the various formulations made, it was observed that formulations A is the best for paper adhesive. --In the formulation, starch was used as the binder, NaOH as a gelatinize, CaCO3 as the filler, the solvent was water, while formaldehyde was used as a preservative to control microbial attack. Borax provided the additional strength. --The working properties such as viscosity, strength (Bonding Strength) melting point etc was determined by analysis based on comparative study. The valves obtained in the table under result in chapter 3.4.0, adhesive was compared farvurably with those already … read more
This project work is on the bleaching of palm oil using activated charcoal. --The charcoal used for this work was made from pieces of animal bone by carbonization method. It was then activated into two different samples. Firstly, the basic sample was activated using anaphoric acid (H2 s04) while the other was activated by just heating as a control for the experiment; both at a constant temperature of 5000c and approximate time of 2hours. --They were both size reduced into fines and sieved into particle 3ye of 150um portion of the crude palm oil was degummed and neutralized for bleaching. Each interval of bleaching with both the acid activated and the ordinary activated charcoal was 8mins and temperature of 1500c … read more
A temperature control apparatus an “Armfield model was refurbished. The methodology employed were to detect the pulty parts of the equipment especially in the sump where leakages were observed. In the repair, the water in the sump was drained off, corrosion and rusting in the tank were scraped off, the sump was washed and allowed to dry. A homogenous mixture of crown filler and hardener mixed in the ratio of 5.1 was used to coat the inner surface of the tank. --Antirust protection was applied all over the inner surface of the tank in order to avoid further corrosion and rusting. Metallic parts of the apparatus including the sump were painted with carlux 842 paint so as to avoid the … read more
The aim of this project was to restore and renovate one phase, one horse power centrifugal pump to its normal operating condition for future practical purposes. --The work started with fault finding/trouble shooting, a method of closing the discharge stop valve, and first priming the pump before running it was adopted. --However, after tighting all nuts and bolts, closing the discharge stop value and priming the pump, the pump still could not run. --It was observed that the inability of the pump to run was as a result of faults as found in the coil, bearing and the wire connection. --Conclusively, after the proper replacement and maintenance operations on the faulty parts as observed, and re-applying the methods of closing … read more
