1.1 Introduction
French is a Romance language that originated in France and is spoken as an official or widely used language in several countries, particularly in Europe, Africa, and other parts of the world. It is also one of the official languages of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), making it relevant to international aviation activities and communication. ICAO recognizes multilingualism as an important principle for effective understanding and implementation of international aviation standards and practices (International Civil Aviation Organization, 2025).
In aviation business, language is important because airlines interact with passengers, airport authorities, travel agencies, business partners, and other stakeholders from different linguistic backgrounds. Although English remains the main language for international aviation communication, knowledge of French is useful when dealing with French-speaking passengers and aviation communities (ICAO, 2017).
The relevance of French becomes more noticeable in Africa, where many countries use French as an official or major language. Nigeria operates within a West and Central African environment that includes several French-speaking countries, creating opportunities for Nigerian airlines to interact with French-speaking customers and business partners. Air Peace, one of Nigeria's major airlines, operates regional routes involving destinations such as Abidjan, Cotonou, Dakar, Douala, Lomé, and Monrovia, alongside its international operations (Air Peace, 2026).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
French is one of the major international languages and has an important position in global communication, diplomacy, education, commerce, tourism, and transportation. According to the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (2022), French is spoken across several continents and remains an important language for international cooperation, particularly in Africa. The language is also one of the official languages of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which gives it a direct connection with the international aviation system. Aviation involves communication among people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, making language competence an important part of effective service delivery. Crystal (2019) stated that the international spread of a language is strongly connected with economic, political, educational, and technological activities. In aviation business, this reality is reflected in interactions among airlines, passengers, airports, and other international stakeholders.
The aviation industry is highly dependent on clear communication because airline operations involve safety, customer service, passenger processing, flight coordination, commercial transactions, and international cooperation. According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (2010), effective communication is fundamental to safe and efficient international air transportation. Although English has a dominant position in international aviation communication, French remains significant because it is widely used in many countries that participate actively in the aviation sector. Similarly, Graddol (2006) reported that multilingual competence provides organizations with greater opportunities to communicate with customers and partners across international markets (Graddol, 2006). Africa provides an important context for understanding the relevance of French to international aviation business. A considerable number of African countries use French as an official language, including countries in West and Central Africa that maintain geographical and economic relationships with Nigeria.
The World Bank (2023) reported that regional integration and cross-border trade remain important to economic development in Africa. In the same vein, the African Union (2020) affirmed that multilingualism is an important feature of the continent's social, economic, and institutional environment. For an airline operating within this environment, the ability to communicate with customers and business partners in their preferred language may improve interaction and facilitate smoother commercial relationships (African Union, 2020).
Nigeria has a large aviation market and maintains air transport relationships with several African countries and international destinations. Air transport supports the movement of passengers, goods, professionals, investors, tourists, and business representatives across national borders. According to the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development (2023), Nigeria's aviation sector plays an important role in national economic development, connectivity, trade, and tourism. Likewise, the International Air Transport Association (2024) reported that African aviation has significant potential for increased connectivity and economic activity as air travel demand develops across the continent.
The relevance of French extends beyond ordinary conversation to several areas of aviation business. Airline employees may require French when providing information to passengers, handling enquiries, assisting travellers at airports, communicating with French-speaking agencies, promoting services, and establishing commercial relationships. Moreover, multilingual communication may assist airlines in developing stronger relationships within Francophone markets. Grin (2003) reported that language competence has economic value because it may improve communication, mobility, employment opportunities, and participation in international activities. However, the availability and effective use of French among aviation personnel cannot simply be assumed. Some employees may have limited exposure to French, while others may possess basic knowledge without sufficient proficiency for professional communication.
This study is set against the backdrop of the growing interaction between Nigerian airlines and Francophone markets and the need to understand the practical relevance of French language competence to international aviation business, using Air Peace Nigeria as a case study.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that French is an important language in international aviation because it is widely used in aviation communication, particularly across Francophone countries and within international aviation institutions. However, language differences may create communication difficulties for aviation businesses operating across English- and French-speaking environments (International Civil Aviation Organization, 2010). On the other hand, Nigerian airlines that operate internationally may encounter challenges when dealing with French-speaking passengers, aviation partners, and destinations.
Additionally, Air Peace Nigeria operates in an increasingly international aviation environment where communication with passengers and business partners from different linguistic backgrounds is important.
Furthermore, inadequate use of French may reduce opportunities for effective engagement with Francophone markets and business partners, especially where direct communication in French is preferred (European Commission, 2020). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the relevance of French language to international aviation business, using Air Peace Nigeria as a case study.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The research will also provide employees with information on the importance of French language skills when dealing with French-speaking passengers and business partners.
Furthermore, the study will show how French language knowledge is applied beyond the classroom, particularly in the aviation and business environment. It will also draw attention to the importance of language support for French-speaking passengers who require information and assistance during air travel.
Lastly, the study will provide information that is relevant to discussions on language skills, staff training, and effective communication within Nigeria's international aviation sector.
1.8 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the relevance of French language to international aviation business, using Air Peace Nigeria as the case study. Geographically, the study is limited to Air Peace operations and relevant personnel in Lagos State, Nigeria, where the airline has a major operational presence.
The study covers French language use in communication, customer service, interaction with Francophone stakeholders, employee performance, and challenges affecting the use of French in international aviation business.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
